Small production brewery in Madison crafting beer without gluten | Star Tribune

(AP) A new ruling by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is clearing the way for something few if any state residents have experienced home delivery of beer. PLCB lawyer Rob Diaz said Friday the advisory opinion outlined that businesses that have retail licenses can legally bring suds to the front door as long as they also obtain whats known as a transporter-for-hire license. The customer cant pay when the beer is delivered, because sales have to occur at the retail establishment. Theres also a 192-ounce limit, which equates to a 12-pack of 16-ounce beers. Wine and liquor arent allowed for delivery. The Pennsylvania Licensed Beverage and Tavern Association is calling it a win for consumers. ( Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Madison brewery crafting beer without gluten - Washington Times

Trevor Easton watches a batch of Hollywood Nights Blonde IPA closely to prevent it from boiling-over at Greenview Brewery inside House of Brews in Madison, Wis., Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014. Since May, Easton has shunned traditional beer ingredients like wheat, barley and rye to make a line of gluten-free beers. (AP Photo/Wisconsin State Journal, M.P. KING) Drinks are flowing and suddenly the light bulb goes on and you think you've solved the world's problems. It's only in the light of day, with your head pounding, that you realize that maybe you're idea isn't so clever after all. But a new beer, called the Problem Solver, claims to offer just the right amount of alcohol to enhance your creative thinking skills. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The brew is based on research by University of Illinois at Chicago professor Jennifer Wiley, who found that the average person's "creative peak' is reached at an alcohol level of 0.075 percent. Inspired by those findings, creative agency CP+B Copenhagen worked with the Danish brewers, Rocket Brewing, to manufacture a beer designed to hit a person's creative peak. The craft IPA has an alcohol by volume of 7.1 percent, which is higher than average beers, and comes with a handy chart on the back of the bottle to show you exactly how much to drink to be at your creative best. It has lines and corresponding weights for both men and women so you can hit Wileys magical number of .075 percent. Drinking the right amount will "enhance your creative thinking," says the bottle, while "drinking more will do the exact opposite. The problem solver, a #beer branded by CP+B. Love it, wonder why someone didn't do it sooner. http://t.co/38bhZkdKlA pic.twitter.com/5PUZXhs3dR Justin Ma (@JustinHMa) December 19, 2014 Mathias Birkvad, managing director at CP+B Copenhagen told Fast Company that they got the inspiration for the beer after seeing how some great ideas were generated at after-hours social gatherings. "As an agency, we believe that creative thinking can solve any problem. So why not take the idea a step further and use the beer to do something good? The Problem Solver beer is currently available in Copenhagen, but we're hoping it could make it stateside soon.

One barrel of beer is made per week and it can take up to six hours to bottle a single batch since the bottling line can fill only two 22-ounce bombers at a time. The brewmaster, founder and owner is doing the dishes, mopping the floor and taking out the garbage at what is one of the smallest production breweries in the country. And when it comes time for Trevor Easton to deliver his beer to 22 grocery and liquor stores and other accounts, his 2008 Chevy Silverado pickup with 117,000 miles on the odometer turns into a beer truck. But what stands out at Easton's Greenview Brewing is what's missing. And that is by design, the Wisconsin State Journal (http://bit.ly/1waNGyd ) reported. Since May, Easton has shunned traditional beer ingredients like wheat, barley and rye to make a line of gluten-free beers. Other breweries, like Sprecher in Glendale and Lakefront in Milwaukee, make gluten-free beer, but Easton's Madison brewery is one of only a few in the country dedicated solely to the production of beer without gluten. His 125-square-foot brewing facility is tucked into the back of another craft brewery, House of Brews, in the brewery's old laboratory. Greenview has its own air-handling system and doesn't use any of House of Brews' equipment. "We do everything we can to limit the potential for cross contamination," said Easton, 34, an East High School graduate who went to school with Peter Gentry, founder of One Barrel Brewing Co. on Atwood Avenue. "We just wanted to make everything dedicated to being gluten-free so (customers) don't have to worry about it." Easton's products which can include sorghum, rice and millet help fill a niche for beer lovers with celiac disease and others who are trying to reduce their gluten intake for health reasons. According to the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center, about 3 million people in the U.S. have celiac disease, an inherited autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive process of the small intestine. When a person who has celiac disease consumes gluten a protein found in wheat, rye and barley the immune system responds by attacking the small intestine. Restaurants and retailers have responded to the growing gluten-free market with menus and products, and the beer industry is following, too. According to data supplied by the Colorado-based Brewers Association and collected by Information Resources, the top 15 gluten-sensitive beer brands in the country had combined sales of $8.8 million through the first six moths of the year, an increase of 37.2 percent over the same time period in 2013. Lakefront's New Grist ranked fourth on the list, with more than 10,000 cases sold in the first half of 2014. Easton had been a homebrewer for more than 15 years, but when his wife, Maureen, an avid beer drinker, was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2007, it forced him to stop making beer in his home. In 2010, he began trying to make gluten-free beer. It took him almost two and half years to come up with a recipe that resulted in a good-tasting beer. "You want to get the right sugar profile so that your yeast is happy in the fermenter and is producing a really good flavor and nice clean taste," Easton said. "You don't want that sorghum punch." Easton, a UW-Madison graduate and industrial engineer, spent seven years with the American Red Cross where he helped the organization standardize its donation processes and laboratory procedures. In 2012, while working toward his MBA at DePaul University in Chicago, Easton was required to write a business plan. When he was finished with his assignment, he discovered that his guideline for a gluten-free brewery looked promising. "Usually when you write a business plan you realize the idea was terrible and you don't want to do it," Easton said Wednesday while brewing a batch of Hollywood Nights Blonde IPA. "This one had potential." After he and Maureen moved to Madison for her job as an attorney, Easton struck up a friendship with House of Brews founder and brewmaster Page Buchanan, who allowed Easton to help out at the brewery. After Buchanan tasted Easton's gluten-free beer, Buchanan offered space in his brewery for Easton's nearly $40,000 set-up. "They were some of the best gluten-free beers I had ever had," Buchanan said. "My whole thing is that I want to see the brewing industry grow in Madison." Challenges for Easton include keeping the price point affordable and finding bars that are willing to take the extra steps to ensure that a tap line for a keg of gluten-free beer is not contaminated with gluten. Currently, Jac's Dining & Taphouse is the only establishment with Greenview beer on tap. The remainder of his accounts sell it in individual 22-ounce bottles, but Easton would like to eventually make his beer available in 12-ounce bottles sold by the six pack. That would require a larger facility. "This is not our end goal," Easton said of his tiny brewery. "This is kind of the pilot.

'Beer Here' Now Open in New Hartford - Time Warner Cable News

These meals of beef and booze were served during elaborate feasts that were likely held as a strategy to gain some political footing in their new home, research suggests. The Icelandic Vikings probably wanted the same "tough guy" status they had in their homeland of Scandinavia, where tribe leaders often held elaborate feasts in huge halls, according to Davide Zori, the archaeological field director for the Mosfell Archaeological Project, in Iceland. The showy feasts of beef and beer were likely held to demonstrate power and political status , and helped the Vikings lock in good relationships with their neighbors. Zori and his team are excavating a farmstead called Hrisbruin Mosfell Valley, in southwestern Iceland. The site includes a Viking chief's 100-foot-long (30 meters) house that also features a great hall that probably hosted some of these extravagant Viking feasts. [ Fierce Fighters: 7 Secrets of Viking Seamen ] Carbon dating showed the house was built between the late 9th century and early 10th century, and was abandoned by the 11th century. The researchers are combining archaeological evidence from the dig site with ancient Viking historical texts to study the group's culture. "These texts read almost like novels," Zori said in a statement . "They talk about daily life. Yes, the Vikings may have put axes to one another's heads, but these accounts also describe milking cows." Not long after the Viking group settled in Iceland, temperatures dropped, and the North Atlantic experienced a small ice age . This cold snap meant nine months of winter and only three months that were only a little warmer than winter, according to Zori. Cattle, the source of the Vikings' elaborate feasts, had to be kept indoors to protect them from the frigid temperatures. Since the cattle were housed inside, they couldn't graze and feed themselves. The Vikings had to ensure food for both the cattle and people would last through the intense winters, and eventually keeping enough cows for elaborate feasts became impractical. Beer also suffered from the cold climate, as Vikings could no longer produce enough grain to support brewing during the shortened growing season. After beer production dropped off in Viking households, chieftains vanished from the Viking sagas that Zori has been studying. "You wonder what came first for the chieftains at Hrisbru," Zori said. "Were they no longer powerful and didnt need barley and beef? Or could they just not keep it up and so they lost power? I favor the second explanation." Archaeological records tell only part of the story, Zori said. The Viking texts provide more context and seem to support the idea that the Vikings did not voluntarily give up their beef and booze, and the political clout that the products brought, until the weather forced them to. "Maybe we don't need the Vikings to prove this, but it shows you that politics can become more important than creating a productive society," Zori said. Eventually, the Vikings had to give up raising cattle and growing grains in favor of sheep herding. Zori and the team hope the dig will yield more insights into the politics and everyday life of the Icelandic Vikings.

Zymatic brews beer at home with head in the cloud | Business & Technology | The Seattle Times

Green further detailed her allegations in a defamation lawsuit against Cosby filed in December. Helen Gumpel, a model and actress known as Helen Selby professionally, appeared in a bit part in a late-1980s "Cosby Show" episode. A short time later, her agent got a call that Cosby wanted to meet with her. In a statement, Gumpel said that, after Cosby hugged and kissed her in front of onlookers at a New York studio, she was asked back to his dressing room. There, she found Cosby "wearing a loosely tied robe" and then -- with the robe still on -- he put "his crotch area in my face," Gumpel alleged. The comedian touched her shoulders then tried repeatedly to get Gumpel to have a drink he'd made, she said. After her refusals, Gumpel said, "Cosby turned his back to me and walked to the door. Cosby looked at me and his face clouded up, as if he was frustrated and angry, and he told me to leave." In a statement released through lawyer Gloria Allred's office, Helen Hayes alleged that Cosby followed her and two friends "around all day" at a summer 1973 celebrity tennis tournament in Pebble Beach, California, hosted by actor Clint Eastwood. Hayes claimed she and her friends tried to avoid Cosby, but he caught up with them in a restaurant, "approached me from behind and reached over my shoulder and grabbed my right breast." "I was stunned and angry, because he had no right to do that and I did not know why he would behave that way," Hayes said. "His behavior was like that of a predator." Famed model Beverly Johnson alleged that Bill Cosby drugged her in the 1980s at his Manhattan brownstone, where she'd gone to rehearse lines. During the meeting, Johnson said, Cosby was "very insistent" she drink a cup of cappuccino he had made for her. "After that second sip, I knew I had been drugged," she alleged. "It was very powerful, it came on very quickly." Johnson said she then confronted and cursed at the comedian, claiming, "I wanted him to know he had drugged me." She alleged that Cosby got angry, grabbed her, took her outside and flagged down a taxi for her. Cosby's attorney didn't immediately return a CNN call for comment on Johnson's allegation, which she first made in a Vanity Fair article. Judy Huth has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming sexual battery and infliction of emotional distress during an incident at the Playboy Mansion, according to court documents. The alleged sexual assault took place in 1974 when Huth was 15 years old. According to court documents, Huth and a 16-year-old friend met with Cosby and eventually went to the Playboy Mansion with him. "He then proceeded to sexually molest her by attempting to put his hand down her pants and then taking her hand in his hand and performing a sex act on himself without her consent," according to the documents. Cosby's lawyer said Huth's claims are "absolutely false" and he accused her of engaging in extortion after Cosby rejected her "outrageous demand for money in order not to make her allegations public." P.J. Masten was a Playboy bunny in her 20s and met Cosby while working as a server at one of Playboy's establishments. He asked her to lunch one afternoon in Chicago, then later called to invite her to dinner, she told CNN. Before the dinner, attended by four other men at the Whitehall Hotel, Masten said, Cosby poured her a drink. "And the next thing I know, it was 4 o'clock in the morning," Masten said. "I woke up in a bed naked, bruised. He was lying next to me, and I slithered out of the bed, my clothes all over the floor. ... I got myself together, I went downstairs, I got in a cab and I went home." Masten recalled "hurting really bad." As to why, she alleged: "There were bruise marks all over me. I knew I was raped by him." Louisa Moritz, seen here in a 1971 episode of "Love, American Style," told TMZ she was in the green room of the "The Tonight Show" at NBC in New York when Cosby paid her a visit. He offered to turn her into a "major star through his direction." Then he forced himself on her, she alleged. Donna Motsinger, 73, one of the Jane Does in the civil suit with Constand, said she met Cosby while working in a restaurant in Sausalito, California. According to Motsinger, Cosby invited her to join him for his show and she accepted. On the way, they stopped for gas and had a drink. After becoming ill, Motsinger said Cosby gave her what she thought was an aspirin. "After that there was some conversation and laughing and stuff, but then the next thing I remember ... he's next to me, he's got his hands on me and I look up I see the lights of the city. I could see it clear as a bell in my mind right now, the lights of the city coming back and it was all blurry, kind of the lights, and I passed out again," she said. Kristina Ruehli was a secretary for a talent agency in 1965 that had Cosby as a client. She said she was invited to a party to celebrate a taping of "Hollywood Palace." Ruehli said she and an actress were the only attendees at the party. She said she became unconscious after consuming drinks and later woke up to find Cosby attempting to force her mouth onto his pubic area. She said she pulled away to vomit and drove herself home. It was the last time she would see Cosby, she told CNN. Florida nurse Therese Serignese, 57, told ABC's "20/20" that she was a 19-year-old model visiting Las Vegas when Cosby handed her pills in a private dressing room after a performance. "Take these," Cosby told her, according to Serignese. After consuming the pills, she remembered "feeling drugged, and I was kind of leaning forward, and he was behind me having sex with me. And I -- I remember it because it was not good." Joan Tarshis was a 19-year-old actress in 1969 when, she said, she met Cosby in Los Angeles. The two became friendly. One night after taping his sitcom, he invited her back to his bungalow and fixed her a "redeye" (a Bloody Mary topped with beer), she alleged. "The next thing I remember was coming to on his couch while being undressed," she told Hollywood Elsewhere. "I was sickened by what was happening to me and shocked that this man I had idolized was now raping me. Of course I told no one." It was the first of two similar incidents, said Tarshis, who is now a journalist and publicist. Linda Joy Traitz said Cosby offered her a ride home while she was working as a waitress at a restaurant in Los Angeles that he co-owned in 1969. On the way, they detoured to the beach. They parked and he offered her drugs "to relax," she alleged. After refusing "he kept offering me the pills," she alleged, and it made her feel uncomfortable. She claimed he then groped her chest, pushing her down in the seat and toward the door, and tried to lie on top of her. She got out of the car and ran, she said. She added that she was "absolutely not" raped. He tried to calm her, she said, then drove her home in silence. Traitz has a criminal record in Florida and spent time in prison on a conviction for drug trafficking, according to state records. Cosby's lawyer passed on her lengthy rap sheet. Traitz spoke openly about her record to CNN. Playboy bunny Victoria Valentino said her friend Francesca Emerson first introduced her to Cosby hoping to help her get work on his show "I Spy" in the late '60s. Valentino said after an interview in his trailer, Cosby invited her and a different friend to dinner, where they drank red wine and Cosby offered her pills to "cheer up," she said. She said she felt "stoned," slurring her words. They then went with him to what she described as a "ballers pad," an office-like space in an apartment building, with two loveseats and no working phone. Valentino said she was feeling "totally out of it" when she saw Cosby attempting to advance on her passed-out friend. She said she began reaching out to Cosby to pull him off her friend when he pushed her down, first pushing himself near her mouth, before turning her around and raping her. Who are Cosby's accusers? Photos: Who are Cosby's accusers? What drugs did Cosby allegedly use? Model: Bill Cosby drugged me Cosby accusers: There are more women "Let me say this," the 77-year-old said . "I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that, you have to go in with a neutral mind." Model Beverly Johnson says Bill Cosby drugged her Brown wrote that Cosby "sounded upbeat on the phone," especially when it came to a question about how his wife, Camille, is holding up. "Love and the strength of womanhood," Cosby said. "Let me say it again, love and the strength of womanhood. And, you could reverse it, the strength of womanhood and love." The actor then resumed his public relations posture of late and ended the conversation, saying, "They don't want me talking to the media." Brown also writes for the Washington Informer, a newspaper targeted to the African-American community, and he spoke with CNN about their conversation. Brown said he came away with the clear sense that Cosby actually doesn't want to stay silent at all but is nevertheless deferring to the guidance of his representatives for the time being.

Massachusetts store's beer bong display near mall Santa Land causes controversy | Fox News

ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT I cant think of a worse place for that, Seidel told the paper the other day. It stretches the imagination to find a scenario more diametrically opposed. The innocence of youth and the magical belief in Santa Claus on the one hand and vulgar advertising the joy of alcohol abuse on the other. Seidel was just as upset with a poster in the Spencers window that shows two women in ugly sweaters that say Lets Get Holly, Jolly Hammered and Tis the Season to Get Wasted. Seidel told the paper he is the father of a 12-year-old girl and shouldnt have to explain to her whats inappropriate about the Spencers window display. The Patriot Ledger spoke to Spencers general counsel, Kevin Mahoney, who said Seidels complaint is the first the company has gotten about the display. There are 600 Spencers Gifts stores around the country. I think most people understand the irreverent nature of our humor and that were not promoting any anti-social behavior, Mahoney said.

Co-founder Mike Nadeau said his business partner and brewmaster, Gabe Rogers, asked him jokingly if he wanted to be the doorman for the day due to the number of people who showed up. Dozens continued to pack the small brewery, located at 455 Central Ave. around the corner from the Franklin Plaza. Were excited, Nadeau said. Were just real excited. Nadeau is a graduate of the Whittemore School of Business at the University of New Hampshire, and has over 17 years of financial operations experience. Over the past 10 years, he was responsible for the business operations of two New Hampshire-based technology companies. Rogers brings eight years of becoming a homebrewer, opening a business and becoming a certified beer judge through the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) to the operation. Rogers also has a culinary background, which helped expose him to craft beer, and has over 15 years of experience in the food and beverage world. The two met when Nadeau entered Rogers store, Yeastern Homebrew Supply, which is adjacent to the brewery, when he went looking for homebrew supplies to make his own beer. With similar interests, the two hit it off and soon learned their individual skills could together to make the dream of a brewery come true. We got to know each other well, and hes a good family guy, Nadeau said Saturday while taking a short break from serving the eager crowd. We just clicked really well. Rogers mother owned the business which was previously housed in the same space as Garrison City Beerwork a shop called De Ja Vu. The response has been really good, Nadeau said. Rogers remained behind the bar Saturday, serving 4-ounce samplers of their craft beer varieties. Four beer varieties were on tap for $1, and a 32-ounce brew cost $9. Rogers focuses solely on brewing while Nadeua handles the business and organizational side of things. Nadeau said that while opening a brewery is exciting, if the beer isnt where it needs to be in terms of taste and quality, then things wont work. With the two men focused on their complimentary strengths to make the brewery a reality, Nadeau believes they have a recipe for success. I think youre going to see that in the quality of the beer, he said. The cozy space features a tasting room that seats 37 patrons and large windows showcasing the brewing equipment itself. With other craft beer breweries having moved into town in recent years, Nadeau said its clear that Dover is getting into the craft beer scene. One thing he hopes will set them apart from other offerings in town is the Crowler, a 32-ounce can that is filled and seamed in front of customers in the tasting room. The Crowler seal blocks light and keeps beer fresher longer, according to Garrison City Beerworks. The can is made from aluminum that has 68 percent recycled content. Garrison City Beerworks is the first brewery in the state to use the Crowler, according to the owners. Currently, there is no food menu at the brewery, but that may change down the road. Nadeau said the important thing, right now, is to focus on the beer and to get that right. We dont want to become distracted with another element, Nadeau said. But that doesnt mean food is out of the question for the future. So far, the menu consists of pale ales, porters, Belgian ales, wild ales and Brettanomyces fermented beers. Called Brett beers, Brettanomyces fermented beers features a non-spore forming type of yeast that makes flavorful beer and is a technique Rogers became interested in early in his brewing career. Were hoping to say, yeah, heres an IPA, but holy cow heres an IPA, Nadeau said. Hours have not yet been set for the brewery, but Nadeau said theyll be announced online within the next few days, either through the companys website at http://garrisoncitybeerworks.com/our-beer/ or on their Facebook page. The Zymatic produces 2.5 gallons per batch and is aimed at brewing enthusiasts and pros looking for a machine to experiment with test runs. I could see restaurants using one to brew beers designed around seasonal meals. One early user is J Wynia, a Minneapolis software developer and avid brewer. He bought a Zymatic partly because he could tap into its Web interface and use the system to demonstrate how his companys workflow and work automation software can be used in factories. Wynia said the price is reasonable compared with automated brewing systems that have been around for a while and range from $2,500 to $6,000. For me, its a machine that adds to my existing setup rather than replacing it, he said via email. Im using it to rapidly experiment with recipes and produce small batches to see if I like what Ive come up with. For recipes that Ive perfected to be exactly what I want, Ill brew them on the bigger rig. After brewing several batches at home, I found that it does indeed remove monotony and uncertainty from the brewing process. Mostly it frees you from the stove. The Zymatic connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, and recipes are managed through a website where owners can download and share recipes and see whats brewing in Zymatics around the world. Last week, I moved the system to a new location in my house, wired it up and loaded it with ingredients for a batch of ale in about a half an hour, while simultaneously making breakfast and packing my daughter up for school. At work I monitored the brewing activity on my PC and phone. At lunch I returned to a fragrant home and finished the brewing process in about an hour. The ale should be ready to drink in a week or so. For someone who has used kits to brew basically boiling up cans and bags of prepared ingredients its an easy way to step up to brewing with raw grains. But its not quite a Keurig for brewing and is probably best for people with some brewing experience and equipment on hand. Its more like a professional machine than a kitchen appliance, though if youre handy enough to change the oil in a car or use a manual espresso machine, youll probably have no trouble with a Zymatic. My second-grader loaded the ingredients. To brew, you select or enter a recipe on the Web console. Then you fill the machine with grains, hops and any extra flavoring additions. A keg is filled with about three gallons of water then connected with included hoses. Over about four hours it cycles the water through the machine, brings it to boil, soaks and swishes it through the ingredients. Youre left with a keg of wort. Then it gets a little trickier. You have to cool the keg as quickly as possible, which I did by putting it into a bucket filled with ice and water. The Zymatic helps by circulating the wort until the temperature is just right. Then you add yeast, put on the special lid and let it ferment. The first batch I brewed spewed foam all over the kitchen during the cooling process but I think it was user error. I may not have tightened the keg hoses enough during the setup. The batch turned out well enough that I may be forgiven for the mess.

Dover brewery draws a thirsty crowd on its opening day | New Hampshire Dining & Food

He was tough at the goal line and a little deeper as well ... Tony Romo became the first player in NFL history to throw three touchdowns with no interceptions in four straight road games. In fact, he has a 15:0 TD:INT ratio over his previous five road games, as the Cowboys remain undefeated away from home (7-0) on the year...The Eagles punted down 11 points with 3:15 left in the fourth quarter...Those who banked on Philadelphia players during the critical Week 15 of the fantasy playoffs watched a team score 27 points with Mark Sanchez , LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin and Jordan Matthews account for zero touchdowns. Not sure what to make of the Colts being life-and-death at home with a Texans team that was forced to start their No. 3 QB ( Tom Savage ) for most of Sundays game, although Indy officially became the first team to secure a playoff spot...All things considered, 77 yards on 13 targets (with no Andre Johnson ) was a disappointing game from DeAndre Hopkins...Over the last four games, Reggie Wayne has totaled 70 yards on 27 targets (he also lost a fumble Sunday)...J.J. Watt had two sacks and drew a holding penalty on a play that negated a long Donte Moncrief TD all in the first half (he also swatted down a pass in yet another dominant performance). Jamaal Charles entered having scored in eight straight games (totaling 11 over that span). He failed to hit pay dirt during the crucial Week 15, watching Knile Davis do so twice while getting just 53 yards from scrimmage during a terrific matchup at home against the Raiders. Its clear Charles entered far from 100 percent, and he also took a big shot Sunday (which led to a goal-line score from Davis on the very next play)...Derek Carr has a 4:0 TD:INT ratio over the past two weeks, but he completed just 48.2 percent of his passes Sunday while getting 4.0 YPA and taking four sacks (while losing a fumble). The 14-point favorite Ravens somehow entered halftime down against the Jaguars despite having a punt block returned for a touchdown within the first four minutes of Sundays game...Justin Forsett was a huge disappointment, as was the seemingly healthy Torrey Smith , who turned three targets into 16 yards...Baltimore has gone 24 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher. Im beginning to think Bill Belichick is unreliable when to comes to who you can predict will get touches... This Mike Wallace touchdown catch was legit ...Pretty crazy this was a one-point game at halftime...Over seven games at home this season, Tom Brady has averaged 301.4 passing yards with a 19:3 TD:INT ratio while taking just five sacks. LeVeon Bell entered with five rushing touchdowns on 1,231 rushing yards. So naturally, when Im facing him in Week 15 while starting Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown , Bell scores twice on the ground while rushing for 47 yards...Harry Douglas proved to be a fine replacement for Julio Jones owners, as he secured 10-of-14 targets for a game-high 131 yards...Roethlisberger completed 77.1 percent of his passes for 360 yards (while getting 10.3 YPA and taking just one sack) yet didnt throw a TD. Big Ben has played four of his last five games on the road, but those considering him during the fantasy championship in Week 16, realize hes gotten 8.9 YPA with a 20:3 TD:INT ratio while averaging a whopping 373.5 yards over six games at home this season. I hate to be judgmental but yes, I do find this weird. The Washington secondary isnt any good, but Odell Beckham Jr. hauled in 12-of-15 targets for 143 yards and three touchdowns. He also pulled down another nice TD catch that was negated by a questionable holding call .The rookie can already run the total route tree, as hes a threat deep and also at the goal line. ODB is the real deal .Hes going to be worth a top-25 pick in drafts next year...There was one other contribution by Beckham, as he helped keep the Giants NFL-high 30th straight game with a turnover in tact when he muffed a punt with fewer than 15 seconds left on a meaningless play...DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Jordan Reed combined for 64 yards on 19 targets, which isnt very good. Over the last two games, the Bills defense has held Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers to a 0:4 TD:INT ratio, including holding Rodgers to the lowest QB Rating (34.3) of his career Sunday. To be fair, it didnt help when Jordy Nelson dropped a wide open would-be 94-yard touchdown...Sammy Watkins hasnt scored since October, when hes totaled just 260 yards on 49 targets over six games. Headlines of the Week: Harvard Business School Professor Goes To Battle Over $4 Worth Of Chinese Food ... Customers Denied Diced Onions, Throw Snake At Tim Hortons Employee ... TV Viewers Angry That Man Didnt Get Eaten Alive By Giant Snake . When it comes to Jeremy Hill , I faced him, faced a team that benched him and benched him myself during the all-important Week 15, so it was a pretty emotional viewing experience. Its quite clear hes going to be ranked well ahead of Giovani Bernard in 2015 drafts...Over two games versus the Browns this season, Andy Dalton has gone 24-of-57 for 203 yards (3.6 YPA) with a 0:4 TD:INT ratio, although Cincy won 30-0 on Sunday...At their own 20 with a minute left in the first half, Marvin Lewis decided the best strategy to win was to run Hill twice up the middle. It didnt result in a crushing fumble lost, but this was still extremely dumb...The last four Bengals shutouts have all occurred in Cleveland...Johnny Manziel had 22 passing yards and two picks at halftime. His 1.0 QBR tied for the lowest (with Brandon Weeden) among all QBs making their first start over the last five seasons. To put it mildly, Johnny Football was absolutely terrible (he was 0-of-4 with two interceptions on passes 15 yards or more downfield). Here are some of his highlights. Greg Olsen has just one touchdown over the past eight games. He also has 20 catches over the past two weeks and has the second-most fantasy points among tight ends this season...Mike Evans has secured just six of his past 19 targets over the last two contests, although three of them have resulted in scores. Im beginning to think Jake Locker might be injury prone...Eric Decker had an 81-yard touchdown cut short to 48 yards when he just barely stepped out of bounds (overturned on a review)...Decker led the Jets with 11 targets, and the next highest was Percy Harvin with three (and he had zero catches). Police Blotter: DUI Suspect Blames Eating Beer-Battered Fish ... Sons Of Anarchy Actor Skins, Cooks, Eats Ex-Girlfriends Pet Rabbit. .. Kids Try To Rob Bank With Toy Rifles ... Teen Killed Father With Crossbow After Skipping School . Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate somehow managed just 91 yards on 13 targets at home against a Minnesota team thats allowed a 91.5 QB Rating to opposing passers this season...Five of Teddy Bridgewaters 10 interceptions this year have come against the Lions. Songs of the Week: TV On The Radio: Trouble and Winter. Fullback Bruce Miller got more targets than Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis combined (and nearly three times as many yards), which kind of says it all...The personal foul penalty on the hit on Russell Wilson on third down that led to Seattles second touchdown was one of the worst calls Ive ever seen in my life...Seattles defense is absolutely dominant. The Seahawks have allowed an average of 6.8 points and 188 yards over the past four games...Wilson has a 6:5 TD:INT ratio at home and a 12:1 ratio on the road this season (hes also ran for three of his five scores on the road). Wilson has lost zero of his nine fumbles this year...It would be surprising if the NFC Championship Game isnt the Seahawks vs. Packers. Longreads of the Week: 2014 Sportsman Of The Year: Madison Bumgarner. (he once dated someone named Madison Bumgarner!) and Livin Thing: An Oral History Of Boogie Nights. Julius Thomas hasnt scored since Nov. 9 yet he still entered the week leading the NFL in TD receptions. That didnt help his owners Sunday, as the hobbled tight end managed just 30 yards on two targets...After totaling 225 yards and three TDs over Weeks 12 and 13, Keenan Allen has totaled 21 yards and zero scores over Weeks 14 and 15...Peyton Manning averaged 41.2 pass attempts last year. Hes averaged 24.7 over the past three games, posting a 3:3 TD:TO ratio over that span. Its unclear how badly hes playing hurt, but thanks to a strong Broncos defense, the team has won all of those games by an average of 10.7 points.

Bill Cosby breaks his silence - CNN.com

Donna Motsinger, 73, one of the Jane Does in the civil suit with Constand, said she met Cosby while working in a restaurant in Sausalito, California. According to Motsinger, Cosby invited her to join him for his show and she accepted. On the way, they stopped for gas and had a drink. After becoming ill, Motsinger said Cosby gave her what she thought was an aspirin. "To have great places to eat in our own neighborhood, it's awesome," said Matascastillo, who lives nearby. "It brings up the reputation of the entire East Side." (Pioneer Press: Ben Garvin) Breakfast and lunch will be served starting April 17. The pair will add dinner service after their beer and wine license is approved, possibly as early as this summer. (Pioneer Press: Jess Fleming) Cook St. Paul, the little East Side diner that used to be Serlin's, now has a beer and wine license. Owner Eddie Wu, who many patrons probably don't know is a pretty good bartender -- he won some bartending awards while working in Denver -- is working on a cocktail menu using sake (technically wine). There's a Korean-influenced bloody Mary, called the Bloody Sange He, that uses a Korean bloody mix and is garnished with kimchi and cucumbers, and a drink called the "Springtime Bandini," which is made with house lemonade, apple juice and a raspberry compote. In addition, they are carrying a small selection of local beers. Wu, who had been holding down the fort alone since partner Charles Cook took another job this summer, has also hired an exciting new chef. Taelyn Lang, who most recently worked at the Modern Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis, has taken over the kitchen. He'll be using local Peterson's Limousin Beef and will make even more of the diner's menu from scratch. Wu said the menu eventually will reflect Lang's influence, and about 50 percent of the current menu items will be scrapped in favor of new dishes that Lang will create.

It opened last week and offers more than 400 varieties of beer. Each weekend, breweries will come in and offer samples in the tasting room, and customers can choose from 16 beers on tap and fill their growlers. The store carries many national and international beers - but focuses on supporting craft breweries springing up all over New York. "They're using a lot of different ingredients that maybe aren't used in the other products and they're making smaller batches, so they can focus on something new, something different," said Brett Levitt, Beer Here president.

Scoats holding huge mug full of pennies that is one of the Feats of Strength on Festivus. Wednesday, December 10, 2014. ( Steven M. Falk / Staff Photographer ) Steven M. Falk DAN GERINGER, Daily News Staff Writer geringd@phillynews.com , 215-854-5961 Posted: Monday, December 15, 2014, 3:01 AM IMAGINE celebrating Christmas without being mauled by mall masses or drowning in debt. Mike "Scoats" Scotese, Mayfair's master of mayhem, is readying his Grey Lodge Pub for Sunday's "Festivus for the rest of us" - a bare aluminum-pole "tree," non-Olympic "Feats of Strength," the "Airing of Grievances" and the singing of cockeyed carols. Scotese plans to debut "I Saw Daddy Punching Santa Claus" in the mix with Grey Lodge classics like "Frothy the Snowman." Festivus, inspired by an epic "Seinfeld" episode, will be celebrated from 6 to 9 p.m. at the craft-beer oasis on Frankford Avenue near Robbins Street. Scotese, 49, could not remember the precise birth of Festivus. His pal Donny Smith, president of the Mayfair Civic Association, said, "Usually, these ideas pop up after we've been sitting around the Grey Lodge for a while. "As the night goes on," Smith said, "you get more loosened up. That's when ideas happen." Smith laughed and said, "You don't want to spend any time in my brain." Last Festivus, at the "Airing of Grievances," Smith pinch-hit for Joe DeFelice, chairman of the Mayfair Community Development Corp., who couldn't make it that night. Smith said, "On behalf of Joe DeFelice, I can't stand it when everybody sings, 'Happy birthday, cha-cha-cha.' " Smith was glad to help fellow activist DeFelice. "I mean," he deadpanned, "that 'cha-cha-cha' thing just drove him nuts." Scotese said: "I complained about gravity. It's always breaking things and making me pick stuff up off the floor." Festivus' "Feats of Strength" are highlighted by the "mug of pennies" competition. "You hold a big mug filled with pennies and keep your arm out straight," Smith said. "You'd think these huge guys could hold it out there forever," he said, "but as time goes on, the mug gets heavier, and people kind of roll over with it. One guy fell." Last Festivus, Scotese said, "Andrew Jardel balanced a bar stool on his chin. It was a Festivus miracle that he didn't get seriously hurt. I heard he's a juggler. Semiprofessional." Art McKee, a Grey Lodge regular, tried to define the joy of Festivus. "You can't get your picture taken with an unadorned aluminum pole anywhere else," he said. McKee discovered the Grey Lodge Pub years ago when, he said, "it was a nasty, smoky, old-man's bar with red plastic booths, all cracked." He said Scotese turned it into a craft-beer oasis, tiled the bathroom walls with mosaics of wild colors and pithy sayings, and created events like Festivus for his offbeat patrons. "Scoats definitely marches to the beat of his own drum," McKee said. "The Grey Lodge is not what I'd call a sports bar. It's more like the Land of Misfit Toys." Grey Lodge Pub built its rep on craft beers, its human re-enactment of Groundhog Day and its "Majestic Lodgedales" - four guys wearing horse heads and cardboard hooves, pulling a beer wagon at Mayfair parades. Smith, who has been a Majestic Lodgedale, said there are two main qualifications: "You have to have a spirited personality - and your head's got to fit the horse mask."

Highlight: Blackhawks fan catches puck with one hand | FOX Sports

Greg Gilbert / The Seattle Times, 2013 Bill Mitchell, left and Avi Geiger with their PicoBrew home beer brewing machine. Related Post a comment Its hard to stop thinking about beer when youre living with a beer robot. Knowing that the robot is standing by, ready to brew a batch on demand, you start to see ingredients everywhere you turn. What elixir could it produce if you fed it gingerbread, rose hips or perhaps a handful of pine needles? In reality, the robot spends a lot of time idle because theres only so much beer you can produce and consume in a single-family home. But its still thrilling to have it brew on your behalf, without having to spend a day hovering around a stove trying to precisely mix, boil and soak ingredients. Thats been my experience the past few weeks living with a PicoBrew Zymatic, the cloud-connected, robotic beer-making machine developed in Seattle by veterans of Microsoft and the food industry. Their goal was to use technology to simplify brewing, remove the drudgery and make advanced beer making more accessible to the masses, similar to what espresso machines have done for coffee at home. PicoBrew tinkered for years before surfacing in 2013 with the Zymatic, an automated, cloud-connected, all-grain brewing system thats about the size of a circa 1980 microwave oven. The machine sells for $1,699, or $1,799 if bundled with one of the 5 gallon kegs youll need to make it work. That may seem expensive, but its in the range of other automated brewing systems and serious brewing setups. It could also pay for itself eventually, if youre a regular drinker of pricey craft brews. Its also been a surprise hit, with sales double what was expected, according to PicoBrew Chief Executive Bill Mitchell, previously a Microsoft vice president. Mitchell started the company with his brother, Jim, a food scientist who built commercial food-processing systems, and former Microsoft hardware architect Avi Geiger. A dozen people now work at its offices near Fremont. It took awhile to get production rolling but after switching to a new manufacturing partner production is up to 200 machines a month. PicoBrew expects to fulfill all of its 400 crowdsourced orders by Christmas. The Zymatic is intriguing and not just because its fun and produces tasty beer. These machines, along with a few other robo-brewing systems that are coming to market, add sparkle to the Internet of Things business that had been a tech industry obsession in recent years. The term refers to the proliferation of sensors, software and connectivity thats expected to provide new ways to connect, monitor and control all sorts of things. But until recently, the jazziest Internet of Things gadget for consumers has been a programmable thermostat. I think the Zymatic is more closely related to the computer-controlled soda dispensers that Taco Time and a few other restaurants use nowadays. They let people mix all sorts of flavors using a touch-screen interface. Inside, the machines sort and blend ingredients and provide an online status report to owners. The Zymatic also joins a parade of unusual but compelling consumer devices created in a region still known more for software and airplanes. Others include the Sonicare toothbrush, the HeartStart home defibrillator and the Clover coffee machine used at some Starbucks. Home-brewing is a niche but its a big one. More than 1 million Americans brew at home and microbreweries are almost the new coffee shop. More than 1.5 are opening every day in the U.S., according to the Brewers Association trade group. I think theyre opening at twice that rate in Ballard. Next time around, vanquished to the basement and with tightened hoses, the Zymatic performed perfectly without any foam release. Once the fermentation is done, the simplest way forward is to connect the finished keg to a carbon-dioxide dispensing system, but casual brewers and beer-drinkers probably dont have such setups on hand. Others can siphon the beer out of the keg and into bottles. Then you have to clean out the keg. These tasks are a reminder that although the Zymatic may be transformative for beer lovers, we have a ways to go before beer robots can do everything. Brier Dudleys column appears Mondays. "After that there was some conversation and laughing and stuff, but then the next thing I remember ... he These meals of beef and booze were served during elaborate feasts that were likely held as a strategy to gain some political footing in their new home, research suggests.

Conley's 36 lead Grizzlies past 76ers in overtime - Yahoo Sports

Load More PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Mike Conley fired an errant pass straight into a women's lap, knocking over a beer and spilling the suds onto the court. He was much more on target aiming for the net. Conley hit the tying 3-pointer to send the game into overtime and scored a career-high 36 points, leading the Memphis Grizzlies past the Philadelphia 76ers , 120-115 on Saturday night. ''I lined it up pretty good,'' Conley said. ''I was able to get a good look.'' Conley had plenty of good looks in the fourth and sparked a Grizzlies rally from 18 points down over the final 7 minutes of regulation to keep the Sixers winless at home. Conley scored 16 points in the fourth and kept Memphis in the hunt for best record in the Western Conference. Zach Randolph had 24 points and 11 rebounds. Conley was 13 of 22 from the floor, hit five 3-pointers and had nine assists. Michael Carter-Williams had an empty triple-double for the Sixers with 16 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. But a handful of turnovers and poor shot selection helped doom the Sixers in the fourth and OT. The Sixers are the only winless team at home in the NBA at 0-12. Actor Will Smith , who owns a small stake in the 76ers, sat courtside. The Fresh Prince wasn't around at the end for this one, and neither was the 76ers' lead. The Sixers led 95-77 with 7:39 left in the fourth when the Grizzlies started to storm back. Conley buried a 3 to make it 102-97 and Beno Udrih hit one to keep the Grizzlies within six. Conley struck again with another 3-pointer with 45 seconds left and it was suddenly 107-104. Like most bad teams, the Sixers unraveled down the stretch. Carter-Williams was whistled for a push-off and Hollis Thompson was called for goaltending to help the Grizzlies pull within one. PHILADELPHIA, PA - DECEMBER 13: Mike Conley #11 of the Memphis Grizzlies looks on against the Philad Thompson, who scored 21 points, appeared to seal the rare win with a pair of free throws. But Conley was left open to bury the 25-footer and tie the game at 109. Conley made 4 of 5 3-pointers in the fourth and scored 16 points without attempting a free throw. Conley delivered in OT, too. His 3 with 23 seconds left pushed the lead to 119-112 and thwarted any last-gasp effort of a Sixers rally. ''Lot of teams would have looked at the scoreboard and said a lot of things aren't going our way,'' he said. ''But we fought through it.'' Both teams were on the back end of a back-to-back. The 76ers lost at Brooklyn on Friday and the Grizzlies won in double overtime against Charlotte. ''Mike Conley just said, 'Hey, I'm not tired. I want to win. Leave me in. I'll do whatever it takes,' so I got him enough minutes,'' coach David Joerger said. ''It's been a tough two games to be 2-0 when we could wake up tomorrow and be 0-2 on this stretch.'' PHILADELPHIA, PA - DECEMBER 13: Tayshaun Prince #21 of the Memphis Grizzlies shoots the ball against Carter-Williams had five of his six turnovers in the fourth quarter and overtime. ''I was trying to do too much,'' Carter-Williams said. The Philly fans roared when Smith, wearing a Phillies cap, was introduced to the crowd. The fans sang along to the team anthem ''Here Come The Sixers.'' And they all stood for an overdue ovation when the Sixers walked off the court up 12 in the third. Thompson snapped a tie game with a tip-in midway through the third and the Sixers appeared in control. Thompson buried a 3-pointer from the corner in the fourth for an 88-71 lead. ''I want to stand here and tell everybody that it's a great learning experience, and there's some truth to that,'' coach Brett Brown said. ''But the truth of the matter is, that's a gut-wrenching loss. That's a fact. I feel for those guys.'' TIP-INS: Grizzlies: Memphis shot 2 of 12 from 3-point range through the first three quarters and 9 of 14 in the fourth quarter and overtime. 76ers: The 76ers had 71 points with 3:32 left in the third quarter. They scored only 70 in Friday's loss at Brooklyn. ... Carter-Williams has had at least six rebounds and six assists in each of the last nine games. ... With the addition this week of forward Ronald Roberts, the 76ers have had 11 undrafted players on their roster this season. APPLES TO APPLES Brown knew before the game the talent didn't necessarily match up on paper.

Beer alert: New kegs of Founders' CBS quietly surface for holidays | MLive.com

. BEND, Ore. (AP) The Facebook page of a local brewery lit up with condemnations: Loyal beer drinkers said the brewers were greedy "sellouts." Some fans threatened to boycott the brand. One declared he would stop wearing a T-shirt promoting the beer. What did the brewers do to provoke such a backlash? Change the hops or yeast? Abandon a favorite ale recipe? No, the furor erupted after 10 Barrel Brewing announced last month that it was being bought by the world's largest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev, which to the horror of craft-beer enthusiasts, makes Budweiser and Bud Light. The acquisition was another example of mega-brewers trying to counter declining sales by tapping into the growth of small craft breweries. And it drew the ire of devoted customers who blasted the corporation as an enemy of the craft beer industry and "the worst guys in the game." People in and around Bend take their beer seriously. Since its first craft brewery opened in 1988, this city of 80,000 has grown from a struggling timber town to a trendy destination featuring skiing, golf, fly fishing and mountain biking, all of which can be capped off at the end of the day with a fine, locally brewed craft beer. The city and the surrounding area now claim nearly 30 breweries, many with owners looking for fulfillment in the beer, not the bottom line. The owners of 10 Barrel, twin brothers Chris and Jeremy Cox and Garrett Wales, say Anheuser-Busch was already handling their distribution. The idea of selling their operation came up over a few beers. In this Nov. 18, 2014 photo, brewer Joe Jasper tends to a vat at Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Ore. Des They promise nothing will change. "We are really good at some things, like brewing cool beer and having fun," Chris Cox said. "Other things, businesswise, we are not so great at. So it's going to be a great partnership." Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. Along with the criticism, the brewery's Facebook page also offered sincere congratulations from fans happy to see a local institution strike a lucrative deal. While nationwide beer sales declined 1.9 percent last year, craft beer sales rose 17.2 percent, according to the Brewers Association, which represents craft brewers. The industry's two giants, Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors, have lost a total 20 million barrels in sales since 2008, said Bart Watson, an economist for the group. View gallery In this Nov. 19, 2014 photo, regulars Jerry Christensen, left, and Bob Brubaker enjoy their favorite Anheuser-Busch craft beer CEO Andy Goeler said the company wants 10 Barrel to "continue to do more of what they are doing" and praised the brewery's "amazing portfolio of beers." Other brewers are wary, especially in Oregon, which has 181 breweries and where craft beer accounts for 40 percent of beer consumed tops in the nation. They're especially leery in Bend, where the town's beer-themed creation story is recited by native and newcomer alike. Located in sunny central Oregon and framed by the snow-capped Cascade Range, Bend was laid low in the 1980s by logging cutbacks to protect the northern spotted owl and salmon. Gary Fish was a California restaurateur looking for a new cool place and landed in Bend. He opened a brewpub in 1988 that quickly became the after-fun place of choice. It evolved into Deschutes Brewery, Bend's biggest, producing more than 300,000 barrels of beer in two dozen varieties. It distributes coast to coast. 10 Barrel started out with a bar on the outskirts of downtown. In 2006, its owners started a small brewery under the motto: "Brew beer, drink beer and have fun doing it!" View gallery In this Nov. 18, 2014 photo, brewmaster Larry Sidor discusses some of his creations at Crux Fermenta Their beers became a hit, and their new brewery produces 42,000 barrels sold in Oregon, Idaho and Washington state. Their pub on the trendy West Side of Bend turned into one of the hottest spots in town, where people wait 90 minutes for a chance to sit at the bar watching the snow gently falling through an open garage door behind the bartender. They also have a pub in Boise, Idaho, and another opening in Portland's hip Pearl District. "The craft brewers came to the rescue of beer in the world," said Larry Sidor, who served a stint as brew master at Deschutes, then started Crux Fermentation Project, where he is experimenting with extreme strains of yeast, hops and other ingredients. The acquisition deals "are really about trying to make beer a commodity again. They are sucking the life out of the brands." But as the craft beer market matures and the original brewers get older, Fish said he expects many to look for someone even a giant like Anheuser-Busch to take over. "I think you're going to see more of this for sure," Fish said. Anheuser-Busch made two earlier craft acquisitions: Goose Island Beer Co. in Chicago and Blue Point Brewing Co. on Long Island, New York. InBev also has a one-third share in a Northwest group that produces Red Hook, Widmer and Kona beers. Philip Gorham, a senior equity analyst at Morningstar Inc., said he expects the portfolio of multination brewers to eventually "look like a patchwork quilt," with different brands for different markets and more national distribution. In Bend, Patric Douglas sipped a Deschutes Jubelale at Crow's Feet Commons, which sells beer, bikes and snowboards. He said the entrepreneur in him cheers 10 Barrel's success. The beer lover in him worries. "If we start selling our identity whole cloth, we are going to lose it," Douglas said. Food & Cooking

Sale of Oregon craft brewery provokes backlash - Yahoo News

Good luck finding some. (ATTB) View/Post Comments GRAND RAPIDS, MI Canadian Breakfast Stout has resurfaced for the 2014 holiday season, but good luck finding some. Founders Brewing Co. sent a new batch of its other ridiculously popular barrel-aged stout to distributors this month, but only in kegs and the company wont say how many went out to the brewerys 32-state distribution footprint. All were willing to share is that its a limited release, said Sarah Aldrich, marketing director at Founders. The last time anyone saw Canadian Breakfast Stout, or CBS, was in 2011. The imperial stout is brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that were subsequently used to age maple syrup. Like Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, or KBS, it is extremely popular. CBS has a nearly unheard-of 100 percent ranking on the Beer Advocate review site, meaning its the kind of beer people are apt to wait in line and drive long distances for. When the company released the last batch, CEO Mike Stevens had to issue a statement addressing frustrated fans who missed out . The kegs out now are from a new batch packaged this year. On Tuesday, several bars in Lansing tapped the first kegs in Michigan. Aldrich said people who want a taste of CBS should call their local craft beer distributor to find out which retailers received a keg. Because of U.S. alcohol distribution laws, the brewery has only minor influence on where kegs go. Monitoring social media buzz is about the only other way to find out where it may be tapped in the coming days. Dont expect a round of CBS in bottles any time soon. We never say never, but it was not bottled on this round, said Aldrich. Garret Ellison covers business, government, environment and breaking news for MLive/The Grand Rapids Press. Holiday gift ideas for the craft beer lover | Eat Arkansas | Arkansas news, politics, opinion, restaurants, music, movies and art

xmasbeer.jpg Home brew kits and home brew beer shops have been a staple for amateur brew masters, but there hasn't been an automated, high tech, one-button solution to create custom microbrews. PicoBrew in Seattle believe it's satisfied that desire for a Keurig for beer -- the home bread-maker for brews -- with the Zymatic, a $1,700 computerized beer making machine. "It's the world's first automatic beer brewing machine," said co-founder and ex-Microsoftie Bill Mitchell. Mitchell left the world of device development to chase his passion for home brewing. Along with his brother and a team of like-minded professionals, Michell wanted to keep the "craft" in craft brewing while embracing the power of the internet and eliminate the guess work associated with home brew systems. The result was the Zymatic. After a very successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $661,000, PicoBrew had the funds to create its dream and is now building Zymatic's at its Seattle production house near South Lake Union. Users create or borrow a recipe from the PicoBrew online library. Brew masters then fill a five gallon cornelius keg with water and attach the hoses from the keg posts to the Zymatic. Depending on the recipe, users add grain to the main compartment of the step filter and add hops into the appropriate hop cages inside the unit. The entire canister slides into the Zymatic and the brewing begins. The brewing takes about four hours, leaving the unfermented beer in the keg that originally held the water. Add the yeast, then after a week of fermentation you get beer ready to be carbonated for dispensing from the keg. National Home Brewer of the Year Annie Johnson was skeptical at first.

Thank you for your patience. Rogue brewery introduces "Sriracha beer" , Posted: Wed, December 10 2014 at 12:22 PM, Updated: Wed, December 10 2014 at 12:51 PM Ore. --- An Oregon brewery is going 'rogue' by going hot and cold on its latest beer. Check it out, this is the Rogue Sriracha hot-stout beer, its ingredients include; hot chili sauce. Rogue Ales admits, that might sound weird but, the company tested the new brew in pubs this past summer and say it was a hit, as you might expect, "hot sauce beer" does present a challenge: Michael Higgins, the director of Liquid Development, Rogue says, Everybody has their own preference, you really gotta find that sweet medium where you get good spice and you deliver on the promise of Sriracha, but you don't, you know, burn somebody's taste buds." Bottles of the Sriracha hot-stout beer went on sale Monday, but, right now, it's only available in Rogue Pubs and online. Copyright KOBI-TV. All rights reserved unless otherwise stated. Christopher Sanzo, president of Sanzo Beverage Co., made a presentation to the Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Board of Directors Tuesday, asking for inducements for the $1.7 million expansion. Hes seeking about $30,000 in sales tax exemptions, as well as a payment in lieu of taxes (P.I.L.O.T.) agreement for reduced property taxes for 10 years. The project would not only help to preserve the 32 current jobs at the distributorship, but add up to 15 new jobs if the companys plans to diversify into distributing wine and liquor, Mr. Sanzo said. About 75 percent of the companys business is distributing Anheuser-Busch beer products. Soda, energy drinks and other summer beverages are becoming a growing part of the business, prompting the need for additional storage space. The new space will be specially constructed to keep the temperature from climbing above 60 degrees. Mr. Sanzo said the $1.7 million will not only cover construction costs, but the purchase of three new delivery vehicles and trailers, as well as warehouse equipment. The company distributes to Cattaraugus, Allegany and five other counties. It is the last of the areas independent beverage distributors, Mr. Sanzo said. Were the last one standing, he said. Were going to hold on as long as we can. The IDA welcomes this project, said Corey Wiktor, the IDAs executive director. The 81-year-old family business is looking to stay independent, grow its business and create new jobs, he pointed out. The company put on its first addition in 2006 with aid from the IDA. The IDA board also approved a resolution thanking Salvatore Marranca, a board member for the past 25 years, who is retiring. Mr. Marranca was the longtime president of Cattaraugus County Bank in Little Valley, which now has several branches.

Sons of Anarchy Series Finale Review: Farewell to the King - Yahoo News

(USA TODAY Sports) SAN DIEGO Major League Baseball's revenues are up 13 percent, according to Forbes , reaching a record $9 billion for 2014. That's $1 billion more than 2013 and another sign that there's no cash-flow problem in baseball. This is why Jon Lester just agreed to a $155 million contract , why Giancarlo Stanton got $325 million and why Max Scherzer figures to become the second pitcher to sign a $200-plus million contract . Everybody's getting paid, plain and simple. Before you complain about the cost of your tickets, hot dog and beer rising, that's only a small part of the spreadsheet. Maury Brown at Forbes explains the big-picture particulars: The reason for the increase? The league saw revenues double for new broadcast deals with their national network partners FOX, ESPN, and TBS that added an additional $788.3 million a year to the leagues coffers. Add that to additional local media rights deals such as the Los Angeles Dodgers ' (between $7 billion and $8 billion annually that sees over 30 percent distributed as revenue sharing), and multi-billion dollar deals for the Rangers, Angels, Mariners, Padres, Phillies, and soon-to-be Astros (the club is mired in restructuring their CSN Houston deal), and you get a significant bump. Throw in that MLB Advanced Media, which not only pulls in hundreds of millions streaming MLB games, but supplies backend streaming services to the likes of ESPN, WWE and CBS March Madness, just announced today it will provide the backend infrastructure for HBOs planned streaming service. As noted in our The Biggest Media Company Youve Never Heard Of, MLB Advanced Media, alone, could see revenues of over $1 billion annually. As Forbes notes, MLB's revenues have grown 321 percent since 1995. Keep that in mind next time someone tells you baseball is dying. It may not generate the same buzz as football these days, but MLB has its business in order. How To Find The Best Place To Work - Forbes

But while it may seem logical to just buy them some beer to feed their need for Santa's reward system, I'm here to say that often that's the wrong move. You see craft beer lovers can often be a fickle and picky bunch. They know what they like and an outsider just grabbing beers off the shelf to gift them might be a waste of money. There aren't a lot of things more sad than a Christmas gift poured down the sink, so here are some gift ideas to get the craft beer lover in your life. * Beer Nerd: A Beer Tasting Trivia Game is a board game where players roll the die and move around the game board as they test their knowledge of beer. * A lot of really good books on the craft beer industry have come out in the last few years if your beer lover is also a reader. I'll recommend a few to get your started: "So You Want to Start a Brewery?: The Lagunitas Story" by Tony Magee, "Brewing Up a Business: Adventures in Beer from the Founder of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery" by Sam Calagione, "Beyond the Pale: The Story of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co." by Ken Grossman, "Diary of a Part-Time Monk by J. Wilson andGoodnight Brew: A Parody for Beer People" by Karla Oceanak. click to enlarge *The movie " Beer Wars "is an interesting documentary on the beer industry, available on DVD. * Back to the reading theme, how about a magazine subscription from one of the fine publications on craft beer out there, like All About Beer, Draft Magazine, Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine and The Beer Connoisseur Magazine. * If they've shown an interest in getting into homebrewing their own beer, I'd suggest maybe a homebrew starter kit from one of our great local stores: The Water Buffalo in West Little Rock and Fermentables in North Little Rock. Both places can point you in the right direction of things you'll need to get them going, or of course a gift card could be very useful. I'd recommend the excellent book "Complete Joy of Homebrewing" by Charlie Papazian as well. * A membership in the Microbrewed Beer Of The Month Club is something I've had for many years and still enjoy. It's a monthly mailing of a dozen12-oz. bottles of hand-crafted beers (4 different) each month for about $40 a month. Truly a gift that keeps on giving. * The TV show Brew Masters only last for 5 episodes, but I thought it was great. It follows Sam Calagione, craft beer maestro, and his team at Dogfish Head Brewery and it's out on DVD now for around $10-15. * A membership in the Beer T-shirt Of The Month Club provides a monthly limited-production T-shirt from some of the most well-known craft breweries around the globe for around $20 a month. * Growler sales were approved in Arkansas this year at liquor stores, and growlers themselves are a great gift. It's simply a glass jug that carries a half-gallon of beer but some can get rather extravagant with clampdown ceramic tops or designs on the glass. I personally love my insulated stainless steel 64-oz growler. Shop around the local liquor stores or online for a wide variety. Throw in a gift card from the liquor store for their first fill! * No longer content to just chug from mugs, the glasswear that beer drinkers use has become a thing this year. Shop around for some great beer glass sets with pint glasses, pilsner glasses, snifters, chalice, mugs, tulips or sample size tasters. I hope I've given you some good ideas somewhere in here, but if not I would always fall back on the trusty gift card from local liquor stores or brewery tap rooms. Most breweries now have a bevy of merchandise like shirts, hats, glasses, signs and more or the gift cards can be used to fill that great growler you just got them. If none of these things work for you, look around for craft beer soaps, candy, dog treats, desk calendars, Jelly Beans (my favorite!), beer scented candles, hot saucer, shampoo and of course, beer mustard. Or if you really love them how about a Kegerator ($400-600) or a guided trip to Oktoberfest in Munich ($2,500)? There's definitely no shortage of gifts to choose from for the beer lovers.

But come on, emotionally charged and knee-jerk TV reviews are the best kinds of TV reviews, and I don't feel like pulling any punches. Those digitally inserted crows were silly. Michael Chiklis's "oh shit" face was silly. That ending was silly. KAITLIN: You don't need to convince me, dude. Silly is the perfect word to describe the way Jax drove head-on into an oncoming semi, welcoming death with his arms spread wide. That's not to say that I think Jax dying was the wrong way for Sons of Anarchy to endas much as I wanted him to win, I'd resigned myself to Jax's sad fate last week, after he murdered Gemma but I think it could've been executed better. Perhaps in a way that wasn't so on-the-nose? I know it wouldn't've been as poetic, but we spent seven seasons watching Jax slowly lose himself, and I think he deserved better than bad special effects. There were definitely some great moments in "Papa's Goods," but I think Sutter really Britta'd the ending. TIM: I'll run with your Community reference and say this was the AT&T of possible Sons of Anarchy endings. And I agree, Jax dying wasn't the problem, even though I previously said that I hoped he would live. My main complaint is that Jax's actions were portrayed as heroic, and all I saw was a coward. "I can't change," he declared, and then he abandoned both his club, and, more depressingly, his family. But Jax never tried to live life outside of SAMCRO. The way he gave up on his kids wasn't heroic in any way. Yeah, they'll have a better shot at not repeating Jax's stupid aggro mistakes, but they're going to have a hell of a time making it without a father (and in Thomas's case, without either parent). Abel was already screwed-up; now his inevitable psychopathy will be accelerated and he'll probably shoot up the school in third grade. And I can't get over the way Jax was smiling throughout the entire episode, especially in those last moments. It's as if he said, "Well, I can't be an outlaw and a dad, so I'm going to be neither. HELLO, TRUCK! TAKE ME TO OUTLAW HEAVEN WHERE THE ANGELS SHOOT MILLER LITE OUT OF THEIR NIPPLES!" Jax's actions were framed to suggest that he was making a great and noble sacrifice, but all I saw was a guy who'd given up. View gallery . KAITLIN: Miller Lite nipples aside, you took the words right out my mouth. As I watched Jax tearfully say goodbye to Wendy and his sons, kill Barosky and Marks, finally sever ties with the Irish, and generally wrap up every single loose end that probably should've been dealt with prior to the series finale, I just kept thinking about what a coward Jax was. I mean, if that's the kind of man Jax really is, then SAMCRO is better off with Chibs at the head of the table (!!!!!!) and Tig wearing the VP patch. And that's where the real problem lies, because I've never thought of Jax as a coward, so my brain is struggling to reconcile the Jax I spent seven seasons with and the Jax of the series finale. Sutter probably thought Jax going out on his own terms was a bold choicetechnically, he escaped the result of the mayhem vote, and he wasn't gunned down by his enemies, yet he still paid for his crimes. However, in reality, he was just weak, which is a word I've never used to describe Jackson Teller before now. Just as I had wanted Gemma to live so she could bear the true weight of all of her sins, I wanted Jax to live so he could try to start over. That would have been the ballsier choice for a man whose entire, insular world revolved around Charming. He told Nero that he was doing what he should have done while Tara was still alive, but I think Tara would've wanted him to actively work toward being a better man. I guess if the main objective was to illustrate that Jax couldn't escape his father's fate, why do I feel like he merely followed in Gemma's craven footsteps? TIM: Personally, I would have preferred to see the club shoot him, as 90 percent of "Papa's Goods" not-so-subtly insinuated would happen. And I would have really preferred the outcome I predicted about 15 minutes into the episode: Jax fakes his death to appease the other charters and goes MIA with his family and Wendy, starting over on Nero's farm! He grows kale and uses farm-fresh eggs to make breakfast! Only Chibs and Tig know he's alive, and he's never heard from again! There you go! Happy ending! But the lesson that Sutter wanted to teach is, "Once an outlaw, always an outlaw, and life will only get worse." "Good outlaw and good father can't settle in the same man," Jax said during a conversation with a rock. Now, I don't know Kurt Sutter personally, but he clearly fancies himself an outlaw, and I don't believe for one second that good outlaw and good father can't coexist. I think what's really bugging me is that bummer of a final message. For many seasons, Jax was the smartest, most noble person in the room (which was always full of lunkheads and deviants). He believed in JT's manuscript. But the life apparently changed him. I guess I figured he was ready to bounce back, that he'd learn from others' mistakes. And I can't even say he repeated his father's mistakes, because if the journals are to be believed, JT wasn't anywhere near as big a jerk as Jax ended up being. So why all the comparisons to his father, right down to the splattery ending? View gallery . KAITLIN: That's like the No. 1 rule of storytelling.
