It's for beer drinkers, too. As described in a recent column on Double Pilsners, the meaning of the "Imperial" denotation found on so many beers these days dates to the late 1700s. Although the history varies a bit, Barclay Perkins began brewing a stout to be sent to Russia about 1781, according to All About Beer Magazine. Because the long journey made it easy for beer to spoil, extra hops (whose alpha acids serve as a preservative) and extra malt, which resulted in extra alcohol (also serving as a preservative), were added. The result was a big, bold, high alcohol and high hop beer. Catherine the Great discovered these beers, and they became favorites in the Russian Imperial Court. Old Rasputin North Coast's Russian Imperial Stout, which has become a cult classic among craft beer drinkers is said by the brewers to be brewed in the tradition of those early Imperial Stouts produced for Catherine the Great's Imperial Court. And like many things with a rich history, there is considerable depth to this beer. Consequently, it is not for beginners. Old Rasputin is packed with flavor, bitterness (at 75 IBUs that's International Bitterness Units that would be considered high even for most IPAs), and, at 9 percent ABV, it packs a punch. The label has a sketch of Rasputin with his hand raised, as if blessing the bottle. Russian writing on the label translates to "A sincere friend is not born instantly." The beer pours black. Pitch black. A thick, impressive tan head floats on top, leaving excellent lacing throughout the drink, which takes some time to enjoy. The aroma is packed with notes that can only be described as huge, big and bold. Rich, dark chocolate and roasted malts are noticeable immediately. Bittersweet coffee beans come through next, followed by a kick of alcohol. The taste develops the smell nicely, if not aggressively. Bitter chocolate hits the tongue early, with charred wood and burnt malts following. The bitterness fades toward the end, with semi-sweet roasted malt flavors coming through before a dry finish. Appearance: 10/10
