Old Town Brewing's New Portland Beer Celebrates "grimm," Benefits Doernbecher Children's Hospital | Oregonlive.com

Local Brewers Help Community Fight Hunger - WBOY.com: Clarksburg, Morgantown: News, Sports, Weather

And who better to pour it than the building's own ghost, Nina? Brewer Cory McGuinness stepped up and stood in for Nina for the beer tasting. (Steve Irwin) View/Post Comments It was a suitably spooky occasion earlier this week when Old Town Brewing tapped its new Wesen Wiezen specialty beer to celebrate the fourth season of Grimm. The media tasting took place in the dark, cobwebby basement of Old Town Pizza next to the closed up Shanghai tunnels that still thread underneath Old Town, and Nina, the turn-of-the-previous-century building's ghost, was our server for the day. Actually, Nina was brewer Cory McGuinness, gamely decked out in a wig and long white gloves, but the beer was the real thing: Wesen Wiezen, a black Bavarian hefeweizen brewed in tribute to Portland's own Grimm TV show, is a classic Bavarian-style hefe with black malt that shifts the shape of the sessionable black ale. The beer is named after the creatures visible to the Grimms, about whom the Grimm Wiki says, " They are the basis not only of the fairy tales that the Brothers Grimm have compiled, but also of the many legends and folklore from many cultures (i.e. Anubis, Aswang, Blutbad, Damonfeuer, and Wendigo)." The specialty brew will be available at both the brewery, 5201 N.E. Martin Luther King Blvd. and the Old TownPizza taproom, 226 N.W. Davis Str.,until sold out. The other thing you should know about Wesen Wiezen is that Old Town Brewing will donate $2 for every pint sold to the Grimmster Endowment at OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital. The endowment Old Town brewers Cory McGuinness, left and Bolt Minister, right, with owner Adam Milne at the Northeast Portland brewery.Brewpublic.com was created by cast members after a visit to Doernbecher and provides support the most vulnerable patients and families, including help with uncompensated care, travel, lodging and other required services. "For Old Town Brewing Co., this is what it's all about," says owner Adam Milne, "creating beer with local partners that reflect the spirit of our city, while being able to give something back to an important local organization."

FAIRMONT - October is beer season in West Virginia and Wheeling Brewing Company's head brewer, Joshua Clarke is using his talents to help the community fight hunger. Saturday, the Fairmont Homebrewers Club hosted its second annual Homebrewers Against Hunger event. "It's something we take for granted everyday that we always have food to eat. This is not that case for a huge amount of people and it's something so simple, I'm surprised that it's such an issue," said Clarke. "This is a great way and a fun way to do it, that's really kind of interesting," Taylor Riffle, Fairmont resident. Last year the event raised more than $12,000 and Clarke is hoping to double that amount this year. The event included music, raffles, and of course plenty of home-brewed beers. All proceeds go directly to funding local food banks in Marion County and the Fairmont Field Club was proud to be apart of such a great cause. "We just had a huge turnout today and all the proceeds go to Meals on Wheels and the Connecting Link. It's two great organizations and we're just proud to be apart of it," said Suellen Lemley, Fairmont Field Club Manager. For more information on Homebrewers Against Hunger, c lick here. Home

'Parts Unknown': 14 things to know about Paraguay Get to know the lions You're bound to be on the lookout for lions in the Serengeti and their conservation deserves a special mention. The tawny lion prides dominating the Ndutu area of the southeastern Serengeti are not your "Lion King" variety of big fuzzy kittens. These giant creatures are respected among locals because of their history of asserting dominance when challenged by aggressive hunters. In an attempt to discourage the trend of stalking and killing lions in the Amboseli Ecosystem, conservation organization Lion Guardians recruits young Maasai warriors to instead protect the regal creatures. By naming the lions and developing relationships by tracking them, members of the guardian program recognize that animals like local lioness Selenkay can live in peace with their human neighbors. Safaris throughout the vast Serengeti give visitors the rare opportunity to see these majestic cats in their native territory. The Ndutu Safari Lodge features 34 cottages with porches facing Lake Ndutu. Learn about Maasai culture For the Maasai, one of the last warrior tribes in the world, cattle are integral to day-to-day life. Besides providing sustenance in the form of milk, and sometimes meat and blood, cows are also currency in the region. The tribes move with their livestock across northern Tanzania and southern Kenya, constructing villages as they go. The settlements generally consist of a ring fence that encloses a group of families, their herds and a collection of mud and dung houses. Where livestock gathers, so do big cats hunting for meals. Relations between the Maasai and the lions that lure tourists by the truckload are tense but evolving. The Maasai are formidable opponents strengthened by a nearly 100% protein diet. A staple is amasi, a lumpy, yogurt-like drink made from fermented milk. Sample the Spice Islands The semi-autonomous islands off the coast of Tanzania exhibit the rich and varied influences that arrived on their shores. On the island of Zanzibar, African, Arab, Indian and European flavors emerge in the cuisine, the homes, the people and the famous carved doors. Today, 99% of the population is Muslim, compared with about a third of the mainland population. Tourism has replaced the spice and slave trades that shaped the island's history, and delicious street food is part of the local island experience. Every night in Stone Town's Forodhani Gardens, vendors set up stalls selling seafood snacks and the famous Zanzibar pizza. Zanzibar pizza is revered as one of the most delicious foods in the region. With toppings ranging from fresh meats to juicy mango, the crepe-like pizza carries its flavorful toppings on the inside almost akin to a burrito. Unlike traditional pizza crust, Zanzibar's variety has the texture of a pancake. And who doesn't love pancakes? The various carts are piled with fresh seafood skewers, African doughnuts called "mandazi" and fried breads. To wash down all the yumminess, try some honey beer or a mixture of sugar cane water, ginger and lime juice. Nearby Pemba Island, also part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, offers a quieter, unspoiled experience.

"Pints for Pups" comes to Lancaster | WPMT FOX43

To date, Next Glass has purchased and tested more than 5,000 beers and is aiming to buy and test another 5,000. Last Modified: Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 11:43 a.m. If the average beer drinker did a census of his cooler, the list would be short: a big brand name such as Budweiser, Miller or Pabst, an import like Heineken and maybe a couple of regional craft brews. Facts Early access The Next Glass mobile app will be free to download. Though a launch date has not been announced, users can sign up at www.nextglass.co to receive a notification when it becomes available. But the American beer landscape offers thousands of varieties, some available nationwide and others specific to a state or even a city. Cataloging them all takes time and a willingness to travel, and that's where Next Glass' Beer Census 2014 comes in. Next Glass is a Wilmington-based company developing a mobile app that will generate wine and beer recommendations for users. To recommend a beverage, the app has to have data on a drink's chemical composition, and getting that data means collecting samples from the beers and wines available to consumers every one of them. Since mid-September, the Next Glass Beer Census truck has been traveling the country in search of suds. The first leg of the tour hit 12 cities from Baltimore to Boston and back to Richmond, Va. On Oct.7, the truck headed west for stops in Cleveland, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and 27 other sites. The census should wrap early next month. Trace Smith, chief operating officer of Next Glass, said the census was the best way to ensure every beer in the market gets included. "With wine, bottles either make it east of the Mississippi or they don't," he said. "Beers are hyper-local." From North Carolina retailers, Next Glass collected 2,500 different beers. The East Coast census yielded another 2,500 bottles, and the western tour will gather 5,000 more. The Next Glass lab then tests those beers, 200 a day, in preparation for the app's pre-holiday launch. While Next Glass will include every regional favorite the census team can get its hands on, Smith said the app will have some location awareness. "If you're in Wilmington and you search for a beer and we recommend or highly rate a beer from Portland that you can't get your hands on, that doesn't do you a lot of good," he said. Driving the census truck are Next Glass's Chief Beer Aficionado Stephen Pond and Chief Beer Collector George Taylor, brother of company founder and CEO Kurt Taylor. "There's definitely some skepticism when you hear about two guys driving around the country buying beer it sort of starts out sounding like a buddy movie," Smith said. But Smith said the truck has had a warm reception from bottle shops. Local news crews have done segments on the truck's visits; people in some cities have offered to quit their jobs to join the census. "Our goal is, let's get everything our users can get their hands on to create a really robust experience for people." Cammie Bellamy: 910-343-2339 Beer Census 2014 is on the road in a big way. 5 can't-miss Tanzania experiences - CNN.com

Lions are fearsome crowd-pleasers for safari goers. The world His last trip was made in 2012. It was his 82nd trip to the country. Continued... See Full Story He feels very strongly about this event. Its an opportunity for us to earn money to support the causes that we do support, he said. Its not just about money. We are a veterans organization and we support many veterans initiatives, but were a community-based organization. The local legion supports the Yardley Makefield Fire Company, the Yardley Makefield Rescue Squad, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts and American Legion baseball. Our policy has always been: if we can keep a kid off the street from doing mischief and playing baseball instead, well do it, Tropia said. The cost is secondary. The post supports the legion veterans home. Everyone has heard of the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia where parents of children who are being treated at Childrens Hospital get to stay, he said. We support a similar thing for veterans. If somebody is really critically ill at the veterans hospital, there is a veterans home where family members can stay while theyre supporting their relative who is undergoing treatment. Members of the post will march in the Veterans Day Parade in Lower Makefield Township on Tuesday, Nov. 11. YARDLEY BOROUGH About 200 folks were happily lifting cups of German Warsteiner beer and toasting at the 5th Annual Oktoberfest at the Yardley American Legion, Knowles-Doyle Post 317 on South Main Street. The food was authentic German bratwurst, sauerkraut and potato salad from Riekers Market in Fox Chase. The German beer was quenching everyones thirst at the Oct. 11 event. We bought two kegs of it, said Bill Tropia, the events planner. It happens to be the one German beer that is locally available and relatively affordable. Some of them can get rather pricey. Oktoberfest increases the legions exposure to the community and attracts new members as well as raising funds for the posts programs to help fellow veterans, according to Tropia. This year, proceeds will also help fund the major exterior renovations of the legions building, which is located near the SEPTA train station and Reading Avenue. Bill Fenimore, post commander, said he was surprised with the turnout considering it rained in the morning. I think were doing well besides the weather, the U.S. Navy veteran said. This morning, it looked a little tough. The people came out to support us and I think everybody is having a wonderful time. Tropia, immediate past post commander, agreed. Im very pleased with the turnout -- especially in light of the weather, he said. I thought we were going to really fall on our faces. He was also happy about the attendees enthusiasm.

Report: Army players lured recruits with alcohol - Yahoo Sports

View photo Army Black Knights fans in the stands against the Rice Owls during a college football game on Saturday, COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Army football players lured prospective recruits with an alcohol-fueled bus trip earlier this year, and 20 cadets, two officers and two coaches have been disciplined, according to a report in The Gazette of Colorado Springs. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, self-reported a recruiting violation to the NCAA, the newspaper said (http://bit.ly/1wtwPYc ). West Point spokeswoman Theresa Brinkerhoff said the academy didn't publicly detail the incident because it was handled ''administratively.'' The academy was warned by the NCAA earlier this month, according to the paper's report. The academy began investigating the incidents in March, according to an internal review by Lt. Col. Shannon Miller, who was ordered to look into the allegations. Football coaches knew about the party but did not immediately tell academy leaders or the NCAA, her report said. The players were instead removed from the spring game. The party reportedly involved 14 recruits who came to visit in January, and were given dinners and tours. They were escorted by members of the football team and two cheerleaders to a mall, and went by bus to a bowling alley with a reputation for overlooking underage drinking, the report said. There, the cadets ordered towers of beer and allowed the recruits to drink, and some cadets said they had seven drinks in 90 minutes. The report also said a military police escort stayed with the bus and that booster money was allocated for the night out. Female athletes at the academy also have been asked to act as dinner dates for recruits, she said. West Point told the NCAA two members of the football staff were removed from team activities for a week. The specific course of discipline against the players involved was not disclosed, but the football players involved were expected to play against Air Force next Saturday. Brinkerhoff said the punishments did not affect athletic eligibility. ''Although seen as a minor infraction by the NCAA, the U.S. Military Academy takes this very seriously and adjudicated this at the highest level of the disciplinary code,'' West Point said in a statement. --- Information from: The Gazette, http://www.gazette.com Sports & Recreation

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) A small upstate New York brewery may soon feel the full force of the "Star Wars" legal department. Lucasfilm is attempting to block a trademark on one of Empire Brewery Co. 's, signature beers, "Strikes Bock." The bock beer's title when combined with the bar's namesake makes for a pun on the 1980 "Star Wars" sequel (or fifth film in the series, depending on who you ask) "Empire Strikes Back." "We named it 'Strikes Bock' because we thought it was a clever pun," said Monica Palmer, Empire's director of marketing. "We weren't trying to infringe on anything. We were just trying to make a nice beer with a funny name." Lucasfilm filed its "notice of opposition" against Empire Brewery, a brewpub located in Syracuse New York when it tried to trademark the beer recently. Strikes Bock by Empire -- as the brewpub calls it -- has actually been around for seven years. Most stock quote data provided by BATS. Beer and Wine Fest raises funds for Stepping Stone Shelter - TheNewsDispatch.com: News

Beer and Wine Fest (AP) -- Riots that erupted after West Virginia University's win over Baylor are costing the city of Morgantown more than $45,000. In a news release late Friday, officials said the expenses include the cost of repairing damage to street lights and light posts, as well as replacing street and traffic signs removed by rioters. Authorities say crowds pushed over street lights and threw rocks, beer bottles and other items at public safety personnel and their vehicles. Numerous fires also were set. More than a dozen people are facing charges from the disturbances following last Saturday's football game. Fire officials reported costs for damaged items and overtime but didn't include more than $2,600 needed to repair several vehicles. Authorities also are ordering helmets, gas masks and other supplies needed to improve crowd control. Society & Culture

WestportNow.com - Westport, Connecticut's 24-hours News and Information Source

Lucasfilm is taking a brewpub to court over the name of a beer in order to protect it's line of Star Wars themed wines, reports the Post-Standard . The brewmasters at Empire Brewing Co. in Syracuse, New York conceived of a bock beer, a dark brew commonly served in the fall, that had an "extremely clean and refreshing" hoppy character. They named it Empire Strikes Bock. In the course of their expansion, Empire went to trademark the name. That's when they drew the attention of the all-seeing eye of Lucasfilm's legal team, which filed a notice in opposition to that trademark. It's worth noting that Lucasfilm isn't asking Empire to stop selling the beer, or even to change the name of it. They just don't want them to own a trademark for the name. Lucasfilm, and its parent company Disney, is inclined to protect its trademarks and as such the formal complaint reads in just about the same way that all other trademark notices read. That is, until you get to the part about the Lucasfilm vineyard. "Skywalker Ranch isn't just a place to work," reads the jobs page at Lucasfilm.com . "It's a world all its own. Employees can visit the produce stand to purchase organic vegetables. Jams, olive oil and wine are produced right here in the fields and vineyards." Lucasfilm contends that selling revelers in New York state drinks inspired by a galaxy far, far away would impose upon their right to do the same in California. Therefore, the Empire Brewing Co. could cause legitimate confusion with consumers aged 21 and over. David Katleski, owner of the Empire, said he'll fight the trademark dispute in court, but he's just not sure how long he can hold out before Lucasfilm's lawyers drop out of orbit. "It's kind of a 'big dog against small dog' thing,'' Katleski said. "We've had this beer for seven years, and we [sought a trademark] because we don't want to infringe on any other beers or anyone else's trademarks." Edit: The original version of this article stated George Lucas was taking Empire to court. That's clearly not correct. Lucasfilm is. More from polygon.com:

Lucasfilm Disputes Brewery's 'star Wars' Beer Name - Oct. 23, 2014

L-Dog NEW YORK (CNNMoney) A small upstate New York brewery may soon feel the full force of the "Star Wars" legal department. Beer of the Week: Kane Head High IPA | NJ.com

The original Arlington Beer Co. proposal called for food trucks to park on the premises for extended periods, but that also is against village code, according to a staff report. Because of those issues, the staff development committee could not give a positive recommendation on the project and the petitioners have altered their plans, for now. "We are going to start slow," Egan said Thursday. "We just want to get open at this point. We aren't really changing our plans, just starting out in increments." Egan said they haven't met with Mayor Tom Hayes yet. She hopes that once Arlington Beer Co. is open, the village will get to know and trust the business. "We are just playing it by ear now, trying to see where the village is. It's the wave of the future, so hopefully it works out," Egan said. "You have to educate people. A tap room wouldn't be a place for people to come and get drunk. It's for people coming for the experience. This isn't new, but it's new to Arlington Heights." Arlington Beer Co. also sits in the midst of the Hickory-Kensington area, which was recently designated as a tax increment financing district and could be subject to redevelopment when a developer comes into the region. Egan said it is too soon to tell what impact the TIF district will have on her business. The company has been renting the space for three years, before the redevelopment was discussed. "It's an awesome area. We are more of a destination business this way," she said.

star wars storm But this story wasn't about the time he spent on Wall Street as a litigation consultant, or his Notre Dame MBA, or even his return to Wall Street as an investment banker, though that's all mentioned. This story was about how he broke away from Wall Street to follow his passion: brewing beer. Michael Kane's story is an interesting one about how his destiny changed from the power of Wall Street to brewing world-class beer. While in Europe after his sophomore year at Fairfield University, Kane was exposed to the various European beer styles. When he returned to Connecticut, he began visiting small, upstart breweries in the area, and saw something they all had in common: the brewers all started as home brewers. So in his senior year, he brewed his first beer, a German Wheat Beer. Immediately, he said, he knew he wanted to open a brewery. But with no money or plan, that dream would have to wait. After earning a degree in finance, Kane went to Wall Street to work four years as a litigation consultant before pursuing his MBA at Notre Dame. He used his time in Indiana not only exploring the craft beer scene, but also learning about how to start a small business. He also landed an internship in the Netherlands in the summer of 2004, which gave him the chance to explore the world of Belgian beers. After finishing his MBA, Kane spent the next four years back in New York City, working as an investment banker, writing a business plan, researching the craft beer industry, and crafting his recipes. In 2010, he quit his Wall Street job and began building Kane Brewing Company, which opened in August 2011. And New Jersey is glad he did. Since opening, Kane has taken the state by storm, helping to lead the way for the recent growth in craft beer in the Garden State. Among Kane's world-class lineup of beers is one of my all-time favorites, Head High IPA. Head High pours a light golden-orange with a thick, white head. Like all Kane beers, it's unfiltered, but the haziness somehow adds to the appeal. Though the taste of the beer screams West Coast IPA, the aroma is incredibly well balanced. A blend of Cascade, Centennial, Citra and Columbus hops added late in the process give huge notes of grapefruit and citrus, but it's all cut by the equally interesting blend of Pilsner, Crystal, Carapils and Wheat malts. A small amount of the 6.50 percent ABV comes through, but it's far from off-putting. Sip on Head High and you'll be hit hard with a sequence of hop notes. Grapefruit, tropical fruits, and citrus make for a remarkable West Coast-style IPA, while a smooth mouthfeel and low alcohol taste keep Head High easy and enjoyable. Appearance: 9/10

Drinking Beer Increases Men’s Chances To Conceive: Study | New York Post

Beef and Beer benefits Marple Newtown Girls Basketball - Marple Newtown County Press - Delco News Network

Beer-guzzling guys can increase their chances of becoming a father if they drink a few beers each day, a new study shows. But while the booze helped men get their gals pregnant, downing a few cups of coffee each day cut the guys chances of making a baby, according to the study done by Massachusetts General Hospital. The study examined more than 100 men at the hospital whose partners were undergoing in vitro fertilization between 2007 and 2013, according to Londons Telegraph. Dudes who downed at least a pint and a half each day were more than twice as likely to have children through IVF than those who stayed stone-cold sober. Java drinkers, however, showed the opposite effect. Men who drank more than two cups of joe each morning had their chances of becoming fathers cut drastically to just 1 in 5. Researchers said caffeine may actually harm a mans sperm at a molecular level. Downing high-octane beverages like espresso at your local cafe can seriously harm your chances of making a baby. A shot of espresso contains around 100 milligrams of caffeine. Men who drank 265 milligrams or more had the least chance of becoming fathers, The Telegraph said. High male caffeine consumption appears to reduce couples chance of achieving a clinical pregnancy, while male alcohol consumption appears to enhance their chances, Dr. Anatte Karmon, an obstetrician at Massachusetts General Hospital, told the paper. Experts said that a few drinks of alcohol a day can reduce a persons stress level, and the doctor agreed that anything men could do to keep healthy and active is productive and helps in becoming a father. Anything that is good for your heart health is also good for your fertility, Karmon told the paper. So do physical exercise and eat a well-balanced diet. Another doctor, however, warned that couples should take some precautions before they start boozing. I see no reason to advise couples attempting IVF to become teetotal, Dr. Allan Pacey told The Telegraph. But they clearly need to drink alcohol sensibly and be advised that if the female partner falls pregnant, she needs to stop at that point to ensure the development of the baby is not harmed. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine gave the presentation for the study last weekend during its annual conference in Hawaii.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the semi full of beer was stolen at the same time as another truck at the same truck stop, leading police to believe that truck-stealing gang may have been targeting that particular truck stop. Truck driver Van Thomas broke down in tears when talking to a reporter about the beer theft. Mr. Thomas had been working as a truck driver for several years before finally saving up the money to buy his own truck. He bought his first rig about three weeks ago, and was taking the load of beer 9,700 4-packs, according to the Sun Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale) from Texas to Pompano Beach when he made the ill-timed decision to stop in Orlando. I dont mean to cry about it but Im just trying to do the best I can and make a better life. Its just so devastating to me. Truck-theft rings have been known to target unattended trucks in order to fence their cargo that is, sell it on the black market according to trucking-industry magazine Overdrive . This summer, a trucking fleet owner pleaded guilty to operating a ring that cruised truck stops looking for unattended trailers, then hooking them and stealing them. Sometimes the thieves get valuable cargo, such as iPads or HDTVs or beer but oftentimes they wind up with something completely useless or even dangerous. Truck thieves have made off with Hersheys chocolate, Slimfast, and even nuclear waste (is there a black market for Slimfast and nuclear waste)? Fortunately for Mr. Van, he got a call from Miami detectives a few hours after his 44,000-pound load of beer was stolen: his truck has been found! Oh my God, thats beautiful! The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that most of his cargo of Miller High Life was found along with the truck. As of this post, its not clear what exactly is mean by most, but even if the beer thieves only stole 1 percent of his load, thats still 97 4-packs. Thats more than enough stolen beer for a long weekend of living The High Life in Miami.

Hackensack council grants beer/wine license to Lucette's; may reconsider full liquor license later - The Pilot Independent: News

(AP) One of the largest beer brewers in the country is suing Kentucky to force the approval of a distributor's license. Anheuser-Busch is asking a Franklin County court to make the Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control administration approve the company's distributor license application in Owensboro. The company claims ABC has passed the statutory deadline for either approving or rejecting the application in 60 days. Anheuser-Busch Regional Vice President Bob Kelley told the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer ( http://bit.ly/1tdUhGc ) the company wants to buy Budweiser of Owensboro's assets in the Mid-America Airpark from The Hand Family Co., of Clarskville, Tennessee, which owns the distributing company. The beer maker needs the distributor's license for the sale to go forward. "We're not asking for special treatment," Kelley said. Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet spokesman Dick Brown says Anheuser-Busch's application for state licensure remains under consideration. Anheuser-Busch's plans to buy the distribution company set off a flurry of opposition from a number of organizations that represent various other players in the state's three-tier system for distributing alcohol. The three tiers are brewers/manufacturers, distributors and retailers. Under that system, a package retailer, for example, can't own a distributorship. The opposition argues that the three-tier system should remain. Without that separation, Anheuser-Busch a subsidiary of a large, global company could buy more distributing companies and control the market, essentially locking out other brands, opponents have said. Of the 500 independent distributors, A-B owns 17, Kelley said. "Folks who have sold to us have been willing sellers," he said. "Nine independent distributors will still be in Kentucky." Brown said the ABC has no time line to rule on the appeal but it will be as soon as feasible, he said. The Hand Family bought Quality Beers Distributing Co. from John Medley's family in 2007. ___ Information from: Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, http://www.messenger-inquirer.com

Anheuser-Busch sues KY over beer distribution - 14NEWS, the Tri-State's News & Weather Leader

The new store replaces the old store adjacent to it at the corner of King and Queen streets. A judge recently ruled that Sheetz can sell beer at its Shippensburg location. (File - Public Opinion) A Sheetz beer cave can be seen in this photo released by the Altoona-based chain. A judge recently ruled that Sheetz can sell beer at its Shippensburg location. (Submitted) SHIPPENSBURG >> Beer is back at the Shippensburg Sheetz. A Cumberland County Judge has issued an order granting the transfer of a liquor license to the Sheetz on East King Street. "This is very exciting for us and our customers," Ryan Sheetz, director of brand development, said in a statement. "Our customers have told us, loud and clear, they want the right to buy beer at convenience stores in Pennsylvania, and we are committed to doing so responsibly and successfully." Beer sales were temporarily halted after the Civic Club of Shippensburg filed an appeal in the Court of Common Pleas in Cumberland County challenging the transfer of a liquor license. The new Sheetz opened this summer after the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approved the license transfer from Ruby Tuesday Inc. of Mechanicsburg. The Civic Club, which is located on the same block as Sheetz, appealed the decision on the grounds that a liquor license cannot be granted to establishments that sell gas. Sheetz argued that the restaurant where the beer is sold and the convenience store where gasoline is dispensed are separate properties. According to court documents, the land is owned by CSP Investments and leased to Sheetz. CSP subdivided the property into two condominium units and a common area. The units have separate tax assessments, as well as different real estate numbers and different addresses. They are separated by walls and doorways. Hess agreed with Sheetz and the PLCB ruling, saying there is clear separation between the sale of gasoline and alcohol. The Civic Club also argued that the purpose of the liquor code is to restrain the sale of alcohol and protect the welfare, health, peace and morals of citizens. Hess said in the order "there have been no meritorious allegations" and that the entity in the best position to determine any detrimental impact on the community the borough of Shippensburg approved a resolution allowing the license transfer. The store becomes the second location in Pennsylvania where Sheetz can sell beer. Similar to Shippensburg, the company also sells beer at a store in Altoona by separating the restaurant from the convenience store. The Altoona-based chain has been a vocal advocate for changing liquor laws in Pennsylvania and sells beer in stores in other states where it operates. Other supporters have said they want the convenience of buying alcohol in a convenience store and claim the required separation of buildings shows how antiquated the state's laws are. Opponents have raised concerns about the proliferation of alcohol and the impact on small family-owned businesses that hold liquor licenses. In addition to the Civic Club's appeal, another appeal had been filed in Commonwealth Court by attorneys representing the Malt Beverage Distributors Association and a couple distributors. In 2012, Shippensburg borough council approved a proposal from Sheetz to sell beer at its new store despite concerns from area residents and officials, largely because of its proximity to the university. The company said that employees at locations where beer is sold go through hours of specialized training programs to ensure that the product is sold properly. "We are encouraged that the courts recognized we were in compliance with law," said Ryan Sheetz. "We are happy to afford this opportunity to our customers once again." Wet European summer leaves Heineken beer sales short - Yahoo Finance

The Dutch brewer, which makes Europe's best-selling Heineken lager as well as Sol, Tiger and Strongbow cider, said beer sales were barely changed in the July-Sept period with declines in both eastern and western Europe, but increases elsewhere. Third quarter consolidated revenue rose 0.2 percent on a like-for-like basis to 5.10 billion euros (4 billion pounds), below the average 5.32 billion euro forecast in a Reuters poll of 10 analysts. The company also said that net profit was lower than in the third quarter of 2013. Heineken nevertheless repeated it expects full-year margin expansion by more than its annual target of 40 basis points. The company has also said that volume growth and revenue per hectolitre would be lower in the second half after a solid first six months helped by the soccer World Cup, good weather and deep cost cuts. In the third quarter, the brewer suffered lower volumes in western Europe due to an exceptionally wet August, a normally key summer drinking month. In eastern Europe, Russian laws on alcohol sales and a weakening economy and competitor price pressure in Poland, added to poor weather. Growth was greatest in the Asia-Pacific region, with wide-spread expansion and strong volume increases of its Tiger brand in Vietnam and Malaysia. Heineken is the market leader in Europe, responsible for half of group revenue and about a third of its operating profit in the first half, although has significant exposure to Africa, Latin America and Asia. The world's top brewers are relying on emerging markets such as Latin America, Asia and Africa for growth amid subdued consumer spending in slowly recovering Europe and limited U.S. expansion. Market leader Anheuser-Busch InBev will report third-quarter earnings on Oct 31 and world number four Carlsberg on Nov 11. Number two SABMiller, with a different financial year, reports first-half results on Nov. 13 (Reporting By Philip Blenkinsop; editing by Robert-Jan Bartunek) Company Earnings

Authorities Assess Riot Damage Following Wvu Win - Washington Times

Esquire says these are the sexiest women alive, you be the judge (AP) - Morgantown authorities on Sunday assessed damage from riots that broke out following West Virginias 41-27 win over No. 4 Baylor, while WVU President Gordon Gee warned students that he will not tolerate such behavior. Crowds pushed over street lights and threw rocks, beer bottles and other items at public safety personnel and their vehicles. Numerous fires were set in the student-dominated Sunnyside area and other parts of the city. Crowds also destroyed fencing protecting several construction sites and breached the properties, Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston said. As a result of the dangerous behavior the events were declared riots, he said. Law enforcement agencies from several jurisdictions responded to the riots. Police used pepper spray and chemical munitions to disperse groups of rioters after they ignored warnings to disperse. Preston did not say what type of chemical munitions was used but said the rioters were dispersed without any serious injuries. Several people were arrested on various charges. It is unfortunate that some fans, not all of whom were students, engaged in riotous behavior following the football teams outstanding victory over the 4th-ranked Baylor Bears. The focus should have been on celebrating our team, coaches and their achievement, WVU said Sunday in a statement. Police and WVU officials are reviewing social media posts and videotapes regarding the incidents. Any student found to be involved will face sanctions, up to and including expulsion, the university said. This is not acceptable Mountaineer behavior, Gee said in the universitys statement. It is criminal and will be dealt with as such. The incidents began shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Sunnyside and spread to other parts of the city, including the central business district. The extent of damage throughout the city is currently unknown but will be assessed over the next couple of days, Preston said. Morgantown and WVU have been trying for years to end the long-standing tradition of setting fires to celebrate athletic victories and other events. In 2012, about 40 street and trash container fires were set following WVUs 48-45 win over Texas. During that post-game celebration, police officers wearing riot gear used pepper spray and CS gas to disperse an unruly crowd of about 1,000 people who gathered in the streets in Sunnyside. Crowds also set street fires in 2011 after al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden died.

CARRBORO, N.C. - Residents in Carrboro were able to raise money for charity while enjoying some locally made beer at the same time. Fifth Season Gardening hosted the fourth annual Homebrew for Hunger Beer Festival Sunday in downtown Carrboro. It was the first time the event was hosted outside the Fifth Season Gardening store. Attendees were invited to taste 100 different beers from 35 local home brewers while also helping families in need in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area. "You can go and have fun, and in this case taste a whole lot of terrific beer and then also make a donation to a worthy charity," said Richard Quinn, with Fifth Season Gardening. "So I would say support organizations and people doing work like this because they really are the life blood of the area." All proceeds from the event benefit PORCH, and all-volunteer organization dedicated to hunger relief. The first three festivals raised more than $25,000 for hunger relief, organizers said. "Ticket purchasers become donors to a truly grassroots charity in PORCH, while simultaneously enjoying dozens of small batch local brews," Quinn said. The Homebrew for Hunger benefit will help PORCH grow its Food for Families program, which gets fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, and eggs directly into the hands of local families in need. Another Homebrew for Hunger event will be held Oct. 26 in Charlottesville. Proceeds will benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Copyright 2014 WNCN . All rights reserved.

CARRBORO: Homebrew festival raises money for hunger relief - WNCN: News, Weather

A home brewer pours a beer at the Homebrew for Hunger event in Carrboro. The chamber had expressed opposition in a letter in August, but changed its position in another letter last month. In the September letter, Kentucky Chamber President and CEO Dave Adkisson said there are varied interests within the chamber membership regarding the issue. A corrected version of the story is below: Beer giant seeking distribution license in Ky. Beer giant's application for distribution license in western Kentucky draws complaints OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) A beer giant's application for a distribution license in a western Kentucky city has stirred complaints that the venture would upset the state's long-held system for distribution of alcohol. Anheuser-Busch's application was approved by Owensboro's Alcoholic Beverage Control administrator in August amid a flurry of protest letters, the Messenger-Inquirer ( http://bit.ly/1F6P9ca ) reported. That decision has been appealed, and a prehearing conference on the matter is set for Nov. 21, said Dick Brown, a spokesman for the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet that includes the state's ABC office. Anheuser-Bush LLC's application for state licensure is pending and remains under consideration, he said. In its application, Anheuser-Busch states that it intends to buy the inventory, fixtures and assets at the current location of Budweiser of Owensboro, a company owned by the Hand Family based in Clarksville, Tennessee. A letter included with the application from the Hand Family confirms its intentions to sell the distributorship to Anheuser-Busch. The sale was expected to close Sept. 26 but apparently is stalled until the beer/cider distributor's license issue is settled. Anheuser-Busch is asking for a two-year license. Most of the letters on file with the local ABC office are opposed to the license and state that it will upset Kentucky's three-tiered system for distribution of alcohol. The three tiers are brewers/manufacturers, distributors and retailers. Each has its own role in regulated alcohol sales, the letters state. Disrupting that system could have serious consequences for communities and consumers, the protest letters said. One potential consequence, they said, is that Anheuser-Busch could distribute only its products, leaving retailers such as liquor stores and restaurants with limited or no access to the brands they want to carry.

'Hoppy Halloween Beer Fest' scares up fun at Broken Goblet Brewing in Bristol Township - Bristol Pilot - BucksLocalNews.com

Brooks For the Contra Costa Times Posted: 10/16/2014 12:00:00 PM PDT Updated: 10/17/2014 05:29:48 PM PDT I'm just back from Denver and the 33rd annual Great American Beer Festival. I've spent more than two decades judging craft beer at the competition and watched it change and grow enormously. There's nothing quite like walking into the great hall, where 710 breweries offer samples of more than 3,500 different beers to the public. When the doors first open, there's a mad rush of people speed-walking to find their first pour of the session -- some 49,000 beer lovers over the course of three days. Some popular booths, including Russian River, New Glarus and Dogfish Head, acquire long lines almost instantly. Faction Brewing co-owners Claudia Pamparana, left, and Rodger Davis pose for a photograph in the soon-to-be-completed brewery they're opening on the grounds of the former Naval Air Station, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013 in Alameda, Calif. (D. Ross Cameron/Bay Area News Group) Impossibly high, black ceilings create an open feel, and if it weren't for the walls lined with banners, giant photographs and sponsor ads, you might think you were outdoors on a starless night. The chatter of thousands of people creates a cacophony of sound that rises and falls. Whenever someone drops a plastic tasting cup, an audible gasp and the occasional boo or yell wafts over the rafters. On the first day, the spill is usually accidental; by the end, people are doing it on purpose, just to get a rise out of the crowd. This year, some 222 of us judged 5,507 beers (16 percent more than in 2013) in 90 style categories (145, if you include subcategories). And we judged another additional 89 Pro-Am beers: Each homebrewer is partnered with a commercial brewery that brews their home recipe on the brewery's system. No surprise: The India pale ale category was the most popular, followed by herb and spice, pale ale, amber or red ale, and imperial or double IPA. The explosion of craft breweries in this country has actually made it more difficult for breweries to enter the GABF's judging competition. Last year's paperwork snafu -- a number of well-established breweries were late with their paperwork and their places were taken by eager new brewers -- led to a new format. This year, anyone who wanted to enter could, but each brewery could enter only up to five beers for judging. It was a good decision: 1,309 breweries represented all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, at the GABF -- and 461 breweries entered for the first time. California triumphs As usual, California breweries did well, bringing home the most medals of any state, and the Bay Area was well represented. In the East Bay, Berkeley's The Rare Barrel won gold for their Cosmic Dust, an American-style sour ale. Alameda's Faction Brewing and Antioch's Schooner's Grille & Brewery both brought home bronze medals. In the South Bay, Campbell Brewing won silver for its Mastiff Barleywine, and Gordon Biersch and Soquel's Discretion Brewing each won a bronze medal. Further north, Bear Republic Brewing, Marin Brewing and Russian River all won bronze; Russian River also won a silver medal for its STS Pilsner. Other notable Northern California wins included gold medals for Mammoth Brewing's Double Nut Brown, Firestone Walker Brewing's wonderful Pivo and Sacramento's New Helvetia Brewing, whose Thurston beer took honors in the historical beer category. Remember that Pro-Am competition I mentioned? This year's gold medal went to Bonnie Prince Charlie's Scottish 80 Shilling, created by homebrewer Michael Kelly and brewed by Bear Republic Brewing Co. Find a full list of this year's GABF awards at bit.ly/gabf014. And if you're thinking of going next year -- Sept. 24 to 26, 2015 -- start planning now, because all three regular sessions sell out quickly. The good news: The 290,000-square-foot GABF hall will be increased by 90,000 more square feet, so the 2015 Great American Beer Festival may well be the largest American beer festival ever. Authorities assess damage from riots sparked by WVUs upset win over Baylor | FOX Sports

People reports that the "Where It's At" singer was performing at MulletFest in Niceville, Florida, finishing up a cover of a Garth Brooks song, when a concertgoer threw the can at him. Lynch, 29, told People, "I was walking down the catwalk and just wham, out of nowhere this beer can just nailed me in the face. It was a completely full can and it felt like a baseball had hit me." The can was just a few inches from hitting him straight in the eye. After he was hit, the audience went into a frenzy, trying to find the person that hit Lynch with the can, causing a small fight to occur. Lynch was bloody, but carried on with the rest of his set. He even took the time to take a selfie on a fan's phone showing off the cut, who posted it to her Instagram account. After he finished his set, he was taken to an emergency room, where doctors treated the wound and gave him stitches. He later took to his Twitter account, saying that the concertgoer that hit him with the can ended up getting away. On my way to the hospital for a few stitches, Ill be okay ... I appreciate all of you. Fyi the guy who hit me with a beer can got away ...

Country singer Justin Lynch gets hit in the face with a full can of beer, has to get stitches | TheCelebrityCafe.com

Cobb said it might have been the team's most complete performance of the season. ''It definitely was a great game for us offensively, being able to put things together the way we did with the run, with the pass, play-action,'' Cobb said. ''So as long as we can continue to execute the game plan and make plays, we're going to continue to have these types of wins.'' It even makes the ketchup bath worth it. ''I apologize to whoever's hot dog that was. It was fresh. I know that because I had all of the ketchup on me,'' Cobb said. Newton, who had a career-high 17 carries last week, had 41 yards rushing on seven attempts. He passed for 205 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown for Carolina (3-3-1). ''What I did wasn't good enough and I understand that,'' Newton said. His Packers counterpart was masterful against the Carolina defense. The 2011 MVP was 19 of 22 for 255 yards before leaving early in the fourth quarter with the game well in hand. ''We had 21 first-quarter points ... which made them one-dimensional,'' Rodgers said, ''especially with the way that Cam ran the ball last week.'' It was Rodgers' sixth straight game without an interception, tying Bart Starr for the franchise record set in 1964. Rodgers finished Sunday with a quarterback rating of 154.5, and the Packers said he was just the second player in NFL history with a rating of 150 or more in two of the first seven games of the season. New England's Tom Brady also did it in 2007. Coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers is much better than three seasons ago. Rodgers thought he could do more. Carolina coach Ron Rivera saw more than enough. ''It's a well-developed offense. They have great communication,'' Rivera said. ''That's what Aaron Rodgers has developed with his players.'' The Packers scored on their first series after Rodgers connected with Jordy Nelson for a 59-yard scoring strike and never looked back to win their fourth straight. Eddie Lacy and James Starks each added rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. The Panthers finally got their first touchdown with 9:39 left in the fourth quarter after Newton found receiver Kelvin Benjamin for a 13-yard score. Packers fans still celebrated with their team up by 28, belting out a hearty chorus of the ''Beer Barrel Polka'' during the break. Nearly everything went right for the Packers in the first half, when nearly everything went wrong for the Panthers. Carolina had pushed Green Bay back to third-and-12 on the Packers 28 on the first drive when the Panthers were whistled for back-to-back penalties. Rodgers scrambled for three yards on third-and-2 before finding Nelson for the long touchdown pass. Nelson got behind cornerback Antoine Cason , who then slipped. Safety Roman Harper watched Nelson sidestep around him and jog all the way into the end zone. ''It was an excellent read by Aaron,'' McCarthy said. ''Big-play production - that's how you win in this league.'' Green Bay's next drive ended with Lacy high-stepping his way for a 5-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 5:53 left in the first quarter. Carolina's frustration mounted as the deficit grew. Linebacker Luke Kuechly was ejected late in the third quarter. Last season's Defensive Player of the Year swung his arms and seemed agitated as he was restrained from behind by back judge Steve Freeman following a scramble for a fumble recovered by the Packers. The linebacker calmed down when he turned around and saw the official, who threw a flag with about two minutes left in the quarter. Kuechly said he didn't mean to do it.
