L-Dog NEW YORK (CNNMoney) A small upstate New York brewery may soon feel the full force of the "Star Wars" legal department. Lucasfilm is attempting to block a trademark on one of Empire Brewery Co. 's, signature beers, "Strikes Bock." The bock beer's title when combined with the bar's namesake makes for a pun on the 1980 "Star Wars" sequel (or fifth film in the series, depending on who you ask) "Empire Strikes Back." "We named it 'Strikes Bock' because we thought it was a clever pun," said Monica Palmer, Empire's director of marketing. "We weren't trying to infringe on anything. We were just trying to make a nice beer with a funny name." Lucasfilm filed its "notice of opposition" against Empire Brewery, a brewpub located in Syracuse New York when it tried to trademark the beer recently. Strikes Bock by Empire -- as the brewpub calls it -- has actually been around for seven years. Most stock quote data provided by BATS. Beer of the Week: Kane Head High IPA | NJ.com

The original Arlington Beer Co. proposal called for food trucks to park on the premises for extended periods, but that also is against village code, according to a staff report. Because of those issues, the staff development committee could not give a positive recommendation on the project and the petitioners have altered their plans, for now. "We are going to start slow," Egan said Thursday. "We just want to get open at this point. We aren't really changing our plans, just starting out in increments." Egan said they haven't met with Mayor Tom Hayes yet. She hopes that once Arlington Beer Co. is open, the village will get to know and trust the business. "We are just playing it by ear now, trying to see where the village is. It's the wave of the future, so hopefully it works out," Egan said. "You have to educate people. A tap room wouldn't be a place for people to come and get drunk. It's for people coming for the experience. This isn't new, but it's new to Arlington Heights." Arlington Beer Co. also sits in the midst of the Hickory-Kensington area, which was recently designated as a tax increment financing district and could be subject to redevelopment when a developer comes into the region. Egan said it is too soon to tell what impact the TIF district will have on her business. The company has been renting the space for three years, before the redevelopment was discussed. "It's an awesome area. We are more of a destination business this way," she said.

star wars storm But this story wasn't about the time he spent on Wall Street as a litigation consultant, or his Notre Dame MBA, or even his return to Wall Street as an investment banker, though that's all mentioned. This story was about how he broke away from Wall Street to follow his passion: brewing beer. Michael Kane's story is an interesting one about how his destiny changed from the power of Wall Street to brewing world-class beer. While in Europe after his sophomore year at Fairfield University, Kane was exposed to the various European beer styles. When he returned to Connecticut, he began visiting small, upstart breweries in the area, and saw something they all had in common: the brewers all started as home brewers. So in his senior year, he brewed his first beer, a German Wheat Beer. Immediately, he said, he knew he wanted to open a brewery. But with no money or plan, that dream would have to wait. After earning a degree in finance, Kane went to Wall Street to work four years as a litigation consultant before pursuing his MBA at Notre Dame. He used his time in Indiana not only exploring the craft beer scene, but also learning about how to start a small business. He also landed an internship in the Netherlands in the summer of 2004, which gave him the chance to explore the world of Belgian beers. After finishing his MBA, Kane spent the next four years back in New York City, working as an investment banker, writing a business plan, researching the craft beer industry, and crafting his recipes. In 2010, he quit his Wall Street job and began building Kane Brewing Company, which opened in August 2011. And New Jersey is glad he did. Since opening, Kane has taken the state by storm, helping to lead the way for the recent growth in craft beer in the Garden State. Among Kane's world-class lineup of beers is one of my all-time favorites, Head High IPA. Head High pours a light golden-orange with a thick, white head. Like all Kane beers, it's unfiltered, but the haziness somehow adds to the appeal. Though the taste of the beer screams West Coast IPA, the aroma is incredibly well balanced. A blend of Cascade, Centennial, Citra and Columbus hops added late in the process give huge notes of grapefruit and citrus, but it's all cut by the equally interesting blend of Pilsner, Crystal, Carapils and Wheat malts. A small amount of the 6.50 percent ABV comes through, but it's far from off-putting. Sip on Head High and you'll be hit hard with a sequence of hop notes. Grapefruit, tropical fruits, and citrus make for a remarkable West Coast-style IPA, while a smooth mouthfeel and low alcohol taste keep Head High easy and enjoyable. Appearance: 9/10
