Drinking Beer Increases Men’s Chances To Conceive: Study | New York Post

Beer, brains and beards ready for this week's Big Brew - Your Houston News: Entertainment:

Beer-guzzling guys can increase their chances of becoming a father if they drink a few beers each day, a new study shows. But while the booze helped men get their gals pregnant, downing a few cups of coffee each day cut the guys chances of making a baby, according to the study done by Massachusetts General Hospital. The study examined more than 100 men at the hospital whose partners were undergoing in vitro fertilization between 2007 and 2013, according to Londons Telegraph. Dudes who downed at least a pint and a half each day were more than twice as likely to have children through IVF than those who stayed stone-cold sober. Java drinkers, however, showed the opposite effect. Men who drank more than two cups of joe each morning had their chances of becoming fathers cut drastically to just 1 in 5. Researchers said caffeine may actually harm a mans sperm at a molecular level. Downing high-octane beverages like espresso at your local cafe can seriously harm your chances of making a baby. A shot of espresso contains around 100 milligrams of caffeine. Men who drank 265 milligrams or more had the least chance of becoming fathers, The Telegraph said. High male caffeine consumption appears to reduce couples chance of achieving a clinical pregnancy, while male alcohol consumption appears to enhance their chances, Dr. Anatte Karmon, an obstetrician at Massachusetts General Hospital, told the paper. Experts said that a few drinks of alcohol a day can reduce a persons stress level, and the doctor agreed that anything men could do to keep healthy and active is productive and helps in becoming a father. Anything that is good for your heart health is also good for your fertility, Karmon told the paper. So do physical exercise and eat a well-balanced diet. Another doctor, however, warned that couples should take some precautions before they start boozing. I see no reason to advise couples attempting IVF to become teetotal, Dr. Allan Pacey told The Telegraph. But they clearly need to drink alcohol sensibly and be advised that if the female partner falls pregnant, she needs to stop at that point to ensure the development of the baby is not harmed. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine gave the presentation for the study last weekend during its annual conference in Hawaii.

Hackensack council grants beer/wine license to Lucette's; may reconsider full liquor license later - The Pilot Independent: News

(AP) One of the largest beer brewers in the country is suing Kentucky to force the approval of a distributor's license. Anheuser-Busch is asking a Franklin County court to make the Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control administration approve the company's distributor license application in Owensboro. The company claims ABC has passed the statutory deadline for either approving or rejecting the application in 60 days. Anheuser-Busch Regional Vice President Bob Kelley told the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer ( http://bit.ly/1tdUhGc ) the company wants to buy Budweiser of Owensboro's assets in the Mid-America Airpark from The Hand Family Co., of Clarskville, Tennessee, which owns the distributing company. The beer maker needs the distributor's license for the sale to go forward. "We're not asking for special treatment," Kelley said. Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet spokesman Dick Brown says Anheuser-Busch's application for state licensure remains under consideration. Anheuser-Busch's plans to buy the distribution company set off a flurry of opposition from a number of organizations that represent various other players in the state's three-tier system for distributing alcohol. The three tiers are brewers/manufacturers, distributors and retailers. Under that system, a package retailer, for example, can't own a distributorship. The opposition argues that the three-tier system should remain. Without that separation, Anheuser-Busch a subsidiary of a large, global company could buy more distributing companies and control the market, essentially locking out other brands, opponents have said. Of the 500 independent distributors, A-B owns 17, Kelley said. "Folks who have sold to us have been willing sellers," he said. "Nine independent distributors will still be in Kentucky." Brown said the ABC has no time line to rule on the appeal but it will be as soon as feasible, he said. The Hand Family bought Quality Beers Distributing Co. from John Medley's family in 2007. ___ Information from: Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, http://www.messenger-inquirer.com

Anheuser-Busch sues KY over beer distribution - 14NEWS, the Tri-State's News & Weather Leader

The new store replaces the old store adjacent to it at the corner of King and Queen streets. A judge recently ruled that Sheetz can sell beer at its Shippensburg location. (File - Public Opinion) A Sheetz beer cave can be seen in this photo released by the Altoona-based chain. A judge recently ruled that Sheetz can sell beer at its Shippensburg location. (Submitted) SHIPPENSBURG >> Beer is back at the Shippensburg Sheetz. A Cumberland County Judge has issued an order granting the transfer of a liquor license to the Sheetz on East King Street. "This is very exciting for us and our customers," Ryan Sheetz, director of brand development, said in a statement. "Our customers have told us, loud and clear, they want the right to buy beer at convenience stores in Pennsylvania, and we are committed to doing so responsibly and successfully." Beer sales were temporarily halted after the Civic Club of Shippensburg filed an appeal in the Court of Common Pleas in Cumberland County challenging the transfer of a liquor license. The new Sheetz opened this summer after the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approved the license transfer from Ruby Tuesday Inc. of Mechanicsburg. The Civic Club, which is located on the same block as Sheetz, appealed the decision on the grounds that a liquor license cannot be granted to establishments that sell gas. Sheetz argued that the restaurant where the beer is sold and the convenience store where gasoline is dispensed are separate properties. According to court documents, the land is owned by CSP Investments and leased to Sheetz. CSP subdivided the property into two condominium units and a common area. The units have separate tax assessments, as well as different real estate numbers and different addresses. They are separated by walls and doorways. Hess agreed with Sheetz and the PLCB ruling, saying there is clear separation between the sale of gasoline and alcohol. The Civic Club also argued that the purpose of the liquor code is to restrain the sale of alcohol and protect the welfare, health, peace and morals of citizens. Hess said in the order "there have been no meritorious allegations" and that the entity in the best position to determine any detrimental impact on the community the borough of Shippensburg approved a resolution allowing the license transfer. The store becomes the second location in Pennsylvania where Sheetz can sell beer. Similar to Shippensburg, the company also sells beer at a store in Altoona by separating the restaurant from the convenience store. The Altoona-based chain has been a vocal advocate for changing liquor laws in Pennsylvania and sells beer in stores in other states where it operates. Other supporters have said they want the convenience of buying alcohol in a convenience store and claim the required separation of buildings shows how antiquated the state's laws are. Opponents have raised concerns about the proliferation of alcohol and the impact on small family-owned businesses that hold liquor licenses. In addition to the Civic Club's appeal, another appeal had been filed in Commonwealth Court by attorneys representing the Malt Beverage Distributors Association and a couple distributors. In 2012, Shippensburg borough council approved a proposal from Sheetz to sell beer at its new store despite concerns from area residents and officials, largely because of its proximity to the university. The company said that employees at locations where beer is sold go through hours of specialized training programs to ensure that the product is sold properly. "We are encouraged that the courts recognized we were in compliance with law," said Ryan Sheetz. "We are happy to afford this opportunity to our customers once again." View the judge's order at https://www.scribd.com/doc/243969085/Shippensburg-Sheetz-order Marcus Rauhut can be reached at 262-4752.

Wet European summer leaves Heineken beer sales short - Yahoo Finance

The Dutch brewer, which makes Europe's best-selling Heineken lager as well as Sol, Tiger and Strongbow cider, said beer sales were barely changed in the July-Sept period with declines in both eastern and western Europe, but increases elsewhere. Third quarter consolidated revenue rose 0.2 percent on a like-for-like basis to 5.10 billion euros (4 billion pounds), below the average 5.32 billion euro forecast in a Reuters poll of 10 analysts. The company also said that net profit was lower than in the third quarter of 2013. Heineken nevertheless repeated it expects full-year margin expansion by more than its annual target of 40 basis points. The company has also said that volume growth and revenue per hectolitre would be lower in the second half after a solid first six months helped by the soccer World Cup, good weather and deep cost cuts. In the third quarter, the brewer suffered lower volumes in western Europe due to an exceptionally wet August, a normally key summer drinking month. In eastern Europe, Russian laws on alcohol sales and a weakening economy and competitor price pressure in Poland, added to poor weather. Growth was greatest in the Asia-Pacific region, with wide-spread expansion and strong volume increases of its Tiger brand in Vietnam and Malaysia. Heineken is the market leader in Europe, responsible for half of group revenue and about a third of its operating profit in the first half, although has significant exposure to Africa, Latin America and Asia. The world's top brewers are relying on emerging markets such as Latin America, Asia and Africa for growth amid subdued consumer spending in slowly recovering Europe and limited U.S. expansion. Market leader Anheuser-Busch InBev will report third-quarter earnings on Oct 31 and world number four Carlsberg on Nov 11. Number two SABMiller, with a different financial year, reports first-half results on Nov. 13 (Reporting By Philip Blenkinsop; editing by Robert-Jan Bartunek) Company Earnings
