And as experiments succeed, brewers dont hoard their secrets. Many smaller breweries build on loans and advice from larger peers. In fact, during a recent specialty hops shortage, Samuel Adams even sold its supply to smaller competitors at cost. So how can you implement this level of innovation and collaboration as strategies for growth in your business? Here are a few suggestions: Dont follow the big guys Giants like Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors are boxed into cost structures and product styles. Forced to worry about mass appeal, their innovation is primarily limited to packaging and distribution models while craft breweries are free to challenge the fundamental nature of beer. Instead of focusing on the big corporations in your industry, use your size to your advantage and enjoy the freedoms that come with being small. Highlight the friendly in friendly competition Small business owners can get bogged down in the details of their own enterprises, but its much more effective to develop a community that can offer advice, mentorship and the occasional adult beverage for commiseration or victory celebrations. Dismiss the misconception that others gain is your loss. With a healthy spirit of collaboration, multiple businesses can grow together in the same industry. Dont stop pushing your limits Craft brewers are experimenting with ingredients, fermentation processes, and even serving methods. Explore the edge of what is known about your existing product. Seek out opportunities to explore unique applications and different approaches to your business. Keep asking, Whats next? Those who are hungry for what comes next tend to develop a contagious momentum. Advocate for your industry Craft beer expansion is driven by brewers advocacy for their products and the market overall.

ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY -- Mama Randazzo's in Altoona says they could soon deliver beer to customers -- and while there are still a lot of questions, they're looking forward to the change. Delivery drivers could soon be taking out more than just food at Mama Randazzo's. Paul Randazzo, Co-Owner, Mama Randazzo's, said, "We are one of the first if not the first in Blair County to apply for it." He's talking about a license that would allow his restaurant and six pack shop to deliver about two six packs of beer to your door. Randazzo said, "If you order food you get it delivered. You can pay for it with cash. We do a mobile credit card transaction. Now, that's not going to be the case." People will have to pay for beer over the phone with credit or debit cards. He thinks this small change could open up big business. Randazzo said, "Sometimes some of these six packs could go for as much or 16 or 18 dollars depending on the alcoholic content, that can add a lot to your bottom line over the course of the year." The lunch crowd here has some mixed feelings about the idea -- but generally seems open to it. Monique Purcell of New Jersey, said, "I think it's a great idea." Beth Becher of Altoona said, " If you really want to get your beer or liquor I think you can just go and get it anywhere. You don't need it delivered to your home." Brennan Long of Altoona said, "If anything it keeps people from driving while they're drinking. It gets the alcohol to them without them having to get it." Randazzo will have to figure out logistics. For example, cars that deliver beer would have to be owned by the establishment. They also would have to train delivery drivers to check IDs. They are all things he's ready to do to stay competitive. Randazzo said, "The PLCB laws and the laws in the state of Pennsylvania have been changing so much so quickly it's just a new ballgame. We hopefully can play a little bit." They say if all goes as planned they could begin delivering beer as early as July 2015. Copyright 2014 Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc. All rights reserved. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to offer beer trip | The Columbus Dispatch

And once you know the formula, it makes it much easier to write them, and much harder to watch them without seeing that formulathe sitcom codeeverywhere you look. My giddy-panicked Googling actually produced fruitful results. With little idea as to where I should begin, I turned to the confidence-inspiring blog, Wise Sloth (whose author, like me, has no TV writing experience), which provided a 15-page breakdown of sitcom formats that I used as a point of departure for my own study. And by study, I mean hopping into my pajamas, cuddling up to my Peruvian Hairless, and watching TV with a notebook in hand. Talib Visram recently wrote in The Atlantic about his experience counting jokes per minute in popular TV shows . My approach was more deconstructionist, and directly applicable to my new gig. I had to figure out how such shows were built, and fast. Fortunately, the answer presented itself very quickly. First of all, word-processing programs often come with screenwriting templates. FinalDraft, the most popular software for those penning scripts, even has a Sitcom Template, which of course makes life much easier. But as for how to construct an episode, various bloggers, from the Wise Sloth to helpful folks at the BBC, noted a basic structure that I immediately recognized in every sitcom episode I tested. This structure is so formulaic that youd think it would suck the fun out of writing and watching such shows, but it does nothing of the sort. While knowing the code it changes the way I watch TV, it only increases my admiration for the good writers who do so much within relatively strict confines. To demonstrate how this formula works, Ive chosen an episode of a favorite show, somewhat at random, because it ideally exemplifies the template: episode 4 of season 1 of Parks & Recreation. The Sitcom Code breaks down what needs to happen in each episode, by the minute. As Dan Richter of Demand Media notes, Sitcoms, minus commercials, are typically 22 minutes long [with] a script of 25-40 pages. Every sitcom episode has a main plot (story A), as well as one or two subplots (stories B and C). There are three main acts, divided by two commercial breaks (in most American TV), with 3-5 scenes per act. One of the distinguishing characteristics of sitcoms, as opposed to other forms of television, is that the main protagonist(s) barely change from one episode to the next, let alone from season to season (Maggie Simpson has been sucking on a pacifier for nearly thirty years). Therefore whatever happens in the episode, the situation must end largely where it began. The Wise Sloth points out that 22 minutes is not even really time enough to tell a full story. The whole story has to be on fast-forward, so simplification is key. Poet Philip Larkin described all plots as a beginning, a muddle, and an end, which is as good a description as any. Each episode begins with the protagonist stating a goal or problem that must be solved, and which we understand will be solved by the end of the episode. If the problem is solved too quickly, then the episode wont stretch out to 22 minutes, so the first attempt at reaching the goal or solving the problem must fail (the muddle), requiring a new approach, before the episode ends and the protagonist either does, or does not, achieve what they set out to do. The goal might be Homer trying to make a fortune by selling recycled grease in The Simpsons, or Job Bluth setting out to sabotage the familys banana stand in Arrested Development, or the Seinfeld crew looking for where they parked in a vast lot. Another hallmark of sitcoms is that the protagonists frequently fail, and we often want them to, because we do not want our favorite characters to change too much. If Leslie Knope ever left Pawnee for a career as a DC politician, we would be distraught. If Kramer got married and moved to the suburbswhoa, now! When writers sit around and prepare a new episode, many literally map out what will happen, minute-by-minute, in the main storyline and sub-storylines, filling in jokes later. Lets see how this played out in the Parks & Recreation episode, Boys' Club . The Teaser (Minutes 1-3) A short, introductory sketch that often runs before the credits. Its little more than a set-up, delivery and reaction: a single joke. It introduces the protagonist and shows some aspect of their personality (for viewers new to the show), and ideally it introduces viewers to the main obstacle to be overcome in the episode. But as often as not, it is simply a quick joke to get the ball rolling. Leslie Knope and her assistant, Tom Haverford, arrive at a park where theyre checking on reports that kids are having fights with dog poo. The rumors are confirmed. Noble Tom hides in the car, while principled Leslie first tries to confront the kids, is fired upon with a barrage of dog poo, and then fires back, admitting that this actually is a lot of fun. We see Leslies role as a local government authority, and her strong (but porous) moral stance. The Trouble (Minutes 3-8) We meet the protagonist(s) and see that theyre just where we left them last episode, but a new problem or goal has come to their attention, which forms the main plot (Story A) of the episode. A plan must be made as to how the goal is to be achieved, or the problem overcome. Around the 6th minute we might be introduced to a subplot (Story B). Subplots must be even briefer than the main plots, and feature one of the minor or secondary characters. Its great if the subplot can somehow link to the ultimate conclusion of the main plot, but this is not necessary. Think of each subplot as a main plot in miniature, likewise with a beginning, a muddle, and the end. Trouble arrives in the form of a gift basket of wine and cheese that Leslie thinks is a bribery attempt from a local firm. She reprimands her colleagues for wanting to dive into the baskets goodies. They complain that shes a goody-two-shoes, and we see her as self-righteousa beautiful setup for a fall. We also see the Old Boys Club: every Tuesday some guys in another government department drink beers in the courtyard, including Mark, whom Leslie has a crush on. She grabs her friend Ann and plans to shatter the glass ceiling by infiltrating this mens club. Theyre welcomed immediately and join the fun, but quickly run out of beer. Trying to keep the party rolling and impress Mark, Leslie breaks open the gift basket that she had previously sequestered and opens the bottles of wine. The Muddle (Minutes 8-13) The plan drawn up a few minutes ago to tackle the main plot is put into action, but it cant work or the episode would be over already. There must be another obstacle, a spanner in the works that requires an alternative plan or some amusing delay to the success of the initial strategy. As the Wise Sloth writes, the characters must confront these obstacles according to their own personal style, meaning that Leslie will approach the problem with her boundless enthusiasm for government and abiding by rules that the little girl inside her sometimes wants to break. With subplots in play, minutes 8-9 establish where we left off with Story A. Minutes 9-12 provide the middle muddle of Story B (the secondary character overcomes a minor obstacle toward their goal), and then minutes 12-13 return to Story A, and see the main plan diverted. Distraught at having broken the code of ethics that she so firmly sought to uphold, Leslie confesses to her colleagues. We are then introduced to Story B, in which a secondary character, Andy, despite his leg being in a cast and his slovenly personality, plots to secretly surprise girlfriend Ann by cleaning the house, and himself, while shes at work. Back at the Parks & Rec office, Leslie whistle blows herself and confesses to her boss, Ron, who merely tells her not to make a big deal of the situation. This could be the end of the show, but it is coming too soon. Wheres that spanner? Back at Story B, we see Andy hobbling along and cleaning the house, then throwing the garbage in the neighboring pit that has been a recurrent theme of past episodes. And then theres the spanner: underage intern April is bored at work and films herself drinking leftover gift basket wine, then puts the video on the official, Leslie-sanctioned website of the aforementioned pit. Ron confronts Leslie, who is now called before the disciplinary committee. The Triumph/Failure (Minutes 13-18) By this time, the protagonist is getting desperate and the stakes are hightheyve already tried once and failed. They turn to a last resort, put it into play, and it worksor it doesnt. Remember that failure is frequent and fine in the world of sitcoms, unlike feature films and dramas. Failure is humorous rather than frustrating, because again we dont want our characters to change. Minutes 13-15 re-establish the action of Story A, but pause before the payoff of whether or not the backup plan will work. Minutes 15-17 conclude Story B: the secondary character either does, or does not, accomplish what they set out to do, and this may, or may not affect the outcome of Story A. Minutes 17-18 show whether the protagonists succeeds or fails in Story A. Ron sits beside Leslie at the disciplinary committee hearing. Leslie reads out a passionate confession. Meanwhile, back at Story B, Andy cleans himself in a kiddie pool, but a neighbor steals his boom box. Naked and soapy, he gives chase. Returning the Story A, Ron defends Leslie against the committee. His anti-government, anarchic stance (despite working for the government) gets her out of a jam. His intervention means that Leslie will only receive a letter in her file, and will not be fired. Leslie confesses to Ann that she opened the gift basket not just to shatter the glass ceiling and allow women into a boys club, but because she has a crush on Mark. Story A is resolved, as is Story B. Ann returns home to a clean house and clean Andy, who has succeeded in his goal, despite the mini-muddle of the neighbor stealing his boom box. He announces to us that he will get gently laid tonight. The Kicker (Minutes 19-21) Like the teaser intro segment before the credits, there is usually an outro (sometimes while the credits are rolling), which shows the protagonist in the aftermath of that episodes action. We find it comforting to see that nothing has really changed, and life has reset, back to where it started and primed for the next episode. It might end with a nice punchline at the end that brings back a joke from earlier in the episode. In The Old Boys Club, the kicker is not a joke but a propulsion into the next episode, fleshing out the budding romance between Mark and Leslie. Mark brings Leslie a beer at her office, after hours, saying welcome to the team. She is in the boys club, and Mark may reciprocate her feelings for him. Roll the credits. This deconstructionist approach to sitcoms was truly helpful when it came time to write my own, as I had minute-by-minute slots to fill and a strong idea of this endlessly successful and recycled series of plot arcs. But I still had to write the darn thing. The Croatian public were waiting.

Beer-seeking panhandler gets cold shoulder: Avon police blotter | cleveland.com

Wholesalers profitability, too, is something worth celebrating, according to Sageworks analyst Jenna Weaver. The outlook for this industry is quite positive right now, as Sageworks data show significant sales growth accompanied by the highest profit margins the industry has seen during the last 6 years, she said. Vodka sales growth may be slowing in the U.S., based on Diageo PLC s latest comments, but in general, privately held wholesalers of liquor, beer and wine have been increasing sales more rapidly in the last 12 months than in the comparable period a year earlier, Sageworks data show. Sales among the wholesalers have increased nearly 8 percent in the 12 months ended Sept. 23, compared with less than 2 percent growth a year earlier, according to Sageworks financial statement analysis of the wholesalers. Net profit margin, on average, has been almost 4 percent in the last 12 months. Profitability for recent 12-month periods had ranged from 2.4 percent in 2012 to 3.5 percent in 2010. The success of these types of wholesalers generally comes down to two main drivers: either selling more product, or demanding a higher price on products sold, said Sageworks analyst Kevin Abbas. Its unclear based on our data whether volume or pricing had the biggest impact on sales growth, but certainly, outside data indicate favorable trends on both fronts for these wholesalers. The wine market in the U.S., which became the top wine-consuming nation in the world in 2010, continued to grow in 2013 as shipments increased 3.2 percent, according to industry market researcher Gomberg, Frederickson & Associates . An increase in the number of breweries nationwide also reflects growing end-markets. According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the number of breweries more than doubled to 869 in 2012 from 2007. As a result, shipments grew 33.6 percent to $28.3 billion, based on the most recent Census data available.

It may one day help with age-related cognitive decline. Posted: Friday, December 26, 2014 6:00 am Can beer boost brain power? Enterprise services Calaveras Enterprise There is newfound reason to indulge in a pint or two of your favorite beer, and its not just to catch up and share a few laughs with friends. New research has shown that a chemical compound in beer may be able to improve cognitive function. The beverage once thought to obliterate brain cells when consumed in abundance may actually have the opposite effect and boost brain power. No one should run out and start imbibing just yet, however. The study that ran in Behavioral Brain Research in October 2014 was preliminary and only conducted on lab mice. During the study, scientists discovered that xanthohumol, a type of flavonoid found in beer, seemed to improve brain function in the young mice given xanthohumol doses. The cognitive flexibility of the mice was tested with a specially designed maze, and younger mice showed signs of intellectual improvement. Older mice showed no improvements. Researchers believe xanthohumol and other flavonoids, such as those found in red wine, blueberries and dark chocolate, may play a role in helping a person form memories. The mice were given very high doses of the flavonoid. A person would have to drink roughly 2,000 liters of beer a day to equal what the mice consumed to show improvement. However, should a supplement hit the market down the road, it may just be possible for men and women to consume a potentially beneficial amount of xanthohumol without bellying up at the bar. One of the goals of the xanthohumol study was to examine its potential efficacy at treating age-related deficits in memory. Xanthohumol also may benefit those with metabolic syndrome, a condition associated with obesity and high blood pressure, as it can speed metabolism and reduce fatty acids in the liver. Flavonoids are plant compounds that often provide plants with their color. Scientists have attributed many health benefits to flavonoids in foods and plants and have even suggested flavonoids can help in the fight against cancer and heart disease. Xanthohumol is rare and is most often found in the hops commonly used to make beer. While doctors and researchers do not suggest running out and consuming a few six packs right now in the goal of improving brain function and cramming for that next test, xanthohumol may one day be harvested from hops to slow down age-related memory deficits.

Page 1 / 2

Small production brewery in Madison crafting beer without gluten | Star Tribune

(AP) A new ruling by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is clearing the way for something few if any state residents have experienced home delivery of beer. PLCB lawyer Rob Diaz said Friday the advisory opinion outlined that businesses that have retail licenses can legally bring suds to the front door as long as they also obtain whats known as a transporter-for-hire license. The customer cant pay when the beer is delivered, because sales have to occur at the retail establishment. Theres also a 192-ounce limit, which equates to a 12-pack of 16-ounce beers. Wine and liquor arent allowed for delivery. The Pennsylvania Licensed Beverage and Tavern Association is calling it a win for consumers. ( Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Madison brewery crafting beer without gluten - Washington Times

Trevor Easton watches a batch of Hollywood Nights Blonde IPA closely to prevent it from boiling-over at Greenview Brewery inside House of Brews in Madison, Wis., Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014. Since May, Easton has shunned traditional beer ingredients like wheat, barley and rye to make a line of gluten-free beers. (AP Photo/Wisconsin State Journal, M.P. KING) Drinks are flowing and suddenly the light bulb goes on and you think you've solved the world's problems. It's only in the light of day, with your head pounding, that you realize that maybe you're idea isn't so clever after all. But a new beer, called the Problem Solver, claims to offer just the right amount of alcohol to enhance your creative thinking skills. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The brew is based on research by University of Illinois at Chicago professor Jennifer Wiley, who found that the average person's "creative peak' is reached at an alcohol level of 0.075 percent. Inspired by those findings, creative agency CP+B Copenhagen worked with the Danish brewers, Rocket Brewing, to manufacture a beer designed to hit a person's creative peak. The craft IPA has an alcohol by volume of 7.1 percent, which is higher than average beers, and comes with a handy chart on the back of the bottle to show you exactly how much to drink to be at your creative best. It has lines and corresponding weights for both men and women so you can hit Wileys magical number of .075 percent. Drinking the right amount will "enhance your creative thinking," says the bottle, while "drinking more will do the exact opposite. The problem solver, a #beer branded by CP+B. Love it, wonder why someone didn't do it sooner. http://t.co/38bhZkdKlA pic.twitter.com/5PUZXhs3dR Justin Ma (@JustinHMa) December 19, 2014 Mathias Birkvad, managing director at CP+B Copenhagen told Fast Company that they got the inspiration for the beer after seeing how some great ideas were generated at after-hours social gatherings. "As an agency, we believe that creative thinking can solve any problem. So why not take the idea a step further and use the beer to do something good? The Problem Solver beer is currently available in Copenhagen, but we're hoping it could make it stateside soon.

One barrel of beer is made per week and it can take up to six hours to bottle a single batch since the bottling line can fill only two 22-ounce bombers at a time. The brewmaster, founder and owner is doing the dishes, mopping the floor and taking out the garbage at what is one of the smallest production breweries in the country. And when it comes time for Trevor Easton to deliver his beer to 22 grocery and liquor stores and other accounts, his 2008 Chevy Silverado pickup with 117,000 miles on the odometer turns into a beer truck. But what stands out at Easton's Greenview Brewing is what's missing. And that is by design, the Wisconsin State Journal (http://bit.ly/1waNGyd ) reported. Since May, Easton has shunned traditional beer ingredients like wheat, barley and rye to make a line of gluten-free beers. Other breweries, like Sprecher in Glendale and Lakefront in Milwaukee, make gluten-free beer, but Easton's Madison brewery is one of only a few in the country dedicated solely to the production of beer without gluten. His 125-square-foot brewing facility is tucked into the back of another craft brewery, House of Brews, in the brewery's old laboratory. Greenview has its own air-handling system and doesn't use any of House of Brews' equipment. "We do everything we can to limit the potential for cross contamination," said Easton, 34, an East High School graduate who went to school with Peter Gentry, founder of One Barrel Brewing Co. on Atwood Avenue. "We just wanted to make everything dedicated to being gluten-free so (customers) don't have to worry about it." Easton's products which can include sorghum, rice and millet help fill a niche for beer lovers with celiac disease and others who are trying to reduce their gluten intake for health reasons. According to the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center, about 3 million people in the U.S. have celiac disease, an inherited autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive process of the small intestine. When a person who has celiac disease consumes gluten a protein found in wheat, rye and barley the immune system responds by attacking the small intestine. Restaurants and retailers have responded to the growing gluten-free market with menus and products, and the beer industry is following, too. According to data supplied by the Colorado-based Brewers Association and collected by Information Resources, the top 15 gluten-sensitive beer brands in the country had combined sales of $8.8 million through the first six moths of the year, an increase of 37.2 percent over the same time period in 2013. Lakefront's New Grist ranked fourth on the list, with more than 10,000 cases sold in the first half of 2014. Easton had been a homebrewer for more than 15 years, but when his wife, Maureen, an avid beer drinker, was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2007, it forced him to stop making beer in his home. In 2010, he began trying to make gluten-free beer. It took him almost two and half years to come up with a recipe that resulted in a good-tasting beer. "You want to get the right sugar profile so that your yeast is happy in the fermenter and is producing a really good flavor and nice clean taste," Easton said. "You don't want that sorghum punch." Easton, a UW-Madison graduate and industrial engineer, spent seven years with the American Red Cross where he helped the organization standardize its donation processes and laboratory procedures. In 2012, while working toward his MBA at DePaul University in Chicago, Easton was required to write a business plan. When he was finished with his assignment, he discovered that his guideline for a gluten-free brewery looked promising. "Usually when you write a business plan you realize the idea was terrible and you don't want to do it," Easton said Wednesday while brewing a batch of Hollywood Nights Blonde IPA. "This one had potential." After he and Maureen moved to Madison for her job as an attorney, Easton struck up a friendship with House of Brews founder and brewmaster Page Buchanan, who allowed Easton to help out at the brewery. After Buchanan tasted Easton's gluten-free beer, Buchanan offered space in his brewery for Easton's nearly $40,000 set-up. "They were some of the best gluten-free beers I had ever had," Buchanan said. "My whole thing is that I want to see the brewing industry grow in Madison." Challenges for Easton include keeping the price point affordable and finding bars that are willing to take the extra steps to ensure that a tap line for a keg of gluten-free beer is not contaminated with gluten. Currently, Jac's Dining & Taphouse is the only establishment with Greenview beer on tap. The remainder of his accounts sell it in individual 22-ounce bottles, but Easton would like to eventually make his beer available in 12-ounce bottles sold by the six pack. That would require a larger facility. "This is not our end goal," Easton said of his tiny brewery. "This is kind of the pilot.

'Beer Here' Now Open in New Hartford - Time Warner Cable News

These meals of beef and booze were served during elaborate feasts that were likely held as a strategy to gain some political footing in their new home, research suggests. The Icelandic Vikings probably wanted the same "tough guy" status they had in their homeland of Scandinavia, where tribe leaders often held elaborate feasts in huge halls, according to Davide Zori, the archaeological field director for the Mosfell Archaeological Project, in Iceland. The showy feasts of beef and beer were likely held to demonstrate power and political status , and helped the Vikings lock in good relationships with their neighbors. Zori and his team are excavating a farmstead called Hrisbruin Mosfell Valley, in southwestern Iceland. The site includes a Viking chief's 100-foot-long (30 meters) house that also features a great hall that probably hosted some of these extravagant Viking feasts. [ Fierce Fighters: 7 Secrets of Viking Seamen ] Carbon dating showed the house was built between the late 9th century and early 10th century, and was abandoned by the 11th century. The researchers are combining archaeological evidence from the dig site with ancient Viking historical texts to study the group's culture. "These texts read almost like novels," Zori said in a statement . "They talk about daily life. Yes, the Vikings may have put axes to one another's heads, but these accounts also describe milking cows." Not long after the Viking group settled in Iceland, temperatures dropped, and the North Atlantic experienced a small ice age . This cold snap meant nine months of winter and only three months that were only a little warmer than winter, according to Zori. Cattle, the source of the Vikings' elaborate feasts, had to be kept indoors to protect them from the frigid temperatures. Since the cattle were housed inside, they couldn't graze and feed themselves. The Vikings had to ensure food for both the cattle and people would last through the intense winters, and eventually keeping enough cows for elaborate feasts became impractical. Beer also suffered from the cold climate, as Vikings could no longer produce enough grain to support brewing during the shortened growing season. After beer production dropped off in Viking households, chieftains vanished from the Viking sagas that Zori has been studying. "You wonder what came first for the chieftains at Hrisbru," Zori said. "Were they no longer powerful and didnt need barley and beef? Or could they just not keep it up and so they lost power? I favor the second explanation." Archaeological records tell only part of the story, Zori said. The Viking texts provide more context and seem to support the idea that the Vikings did not voluntarily give up their beef and booze, and the political clout that the products brought, until the weather forced them to. "Maybe we don't need the Vikings to prove this, but it shows you that politics can become more important than creating a productive society," Zori said. Eventually, the Vikings had to give up raising cattle and growing grains in favor of sheep herding. Zori and the team hope the dig will yield more insights into the politics and everyday life of the Icelandic Vikings.

Zymatic brews beer at home with head in the cloud | Business & Technology | The Seattle Times

Green further detailed her allegations in a defamation lawsuit against Cosby filed in December. Helen Gumpel, a model and actress known as Helen Selby professionally, appeared in a bit part in a late-1980s "Cosby Show" episode. A short time later, her agent got a call that Cosby wanted to meet with her. In a statement, Gumpel said that, after Cosby hugged and kissed her in front of onlookers at a New York studio, she was asked back to his dressing room. There, she found Cosby "wearing a loosely tied robe" and then -- with the robe still on -- he put "his crotch area in my face," Gumpel alleged. The comedian touched her shoulders then tried repeatedly to get Gumpel to have a drink he'd made, she said. After her refusals, Gumpel said, "Cosby turned his back to me and walked to the door. Cosby looked at me and his face clouded up, as if he was frustrated and angry, and he told me to leave." In a statement released through lawyer Gloria Allred's office, Helen Hayes alleged that Cosby followed her and two friends "around all day" at a summer 1973 celebrity tennis tournament in Pebble Beach, California, hosted by actor Clint Eastwood. Hayes claimed she and her friends tried to avoid Cosby, but he caught up with them in a restaurant, "approached me from behind and reached over my shoulder and grabbed my right breast." "I was stunned and angry, because he had no right to do that and I did not know why he would behave that way," Hayes said. "His behavior was like that of a predator." Famed model Beverly Johnson alleged that Bill Cosby drugged her in the 1980s at his Manhattan brownstone, where she'd gone to rehearse lines. During the meeting, Johnson said, Cosby was "very insistent" she drink a cup of cappuccino he had made for her. "After that second sip, I knew I had been drugged," she alleged. "It was very powerful, it came on very quickly." Johnson said she then confronted and cursed at the comedian, claiming, "I wanted him to know he had drugged me." She alleged that Cosby got angry, grabbed her, took her outside and flagged down a taxi for her. Cosby's attorney didn't immediately return a CNN call for comment on Johnson's allegation, which she first made in a Vanity Fair article. Judy Huth has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming sexual battery and infliction of emotional distress during an incident at the Playboy Mansion, according to court documents. The alleged sexual assault took place in 1974 when Huth was 15 years old. According to court documents, Huth and a 16-year-old friend met with Cosby and eventually went to the Playboy Mansion with him. "He then proceeded to sexually molest her by attempting to put his hand down her pants and then taking her hand in his hand and performing a sex act on himself without her consent," according to the documents. Cosby's lawyer said Huth's claims are "absolutely false" and he accused her of engaging in extortion after Cosby rejected her "outrageous demand for money in order not to make her allegations public." P.J. Masten was a Playboy bunny in her 20s and met Cosby while working as a server at one of Playboy's establishments. He asked her to lunch one afternoon in Chicago, then later called to invite her to dinner, she told CNN. Before the dinner, attended by four other men at the Whitehall Hotel, Masten said, Cosby poured her a drink. "And the next thing I know, it was 4 o'clock in the morning," Masten said. "I woke up in a bed naked, bruised. He was lying next to me, and I slithered out of the bed, my clothes all over the floor. ... I got myself together, I went downstairs, I got in a cab and I went home." Masten recalled "hurting really bad." As to why, she alleged: "There were bruise marks all over me. I knew I was raped by him." Louisa Moritz, seen here in a 1971 episode of "Love, American Style," told TMZ she was in the green room of the "The Tonight Show" at NBC in New York when Cosby paid her a visit. He offered to turn her into a "major star through his direction." Then he forced himself on her, she alleged. Donna Motsinger, 73, one of the Jane Does in the civil suit with Constand, said she met Cosby while working in a restaurant in Sausalito, California. According to Motsinger, Cosby invited her to join him for his show and she accepted. On the way, they stopped for gas and had a drink. After becoming ill, Motsinger said Cosby gave her what she thought was an aspirin. "After that there was some conversation and laughing and stuff, but then the next thing I remember ... he's next to me, he's got his hands on me and I look up I see the lights of the city. I could see it clear as a bell in my mind right now, the lights of the city coming back and it was all blurry, kind of the lights, and I passed out again," she said. Kristina Ruehli was a secretary for a talent agency in 1965 that had Cosby as a client. She said she was invited to a party to celebrate a taping of "Hollywood Palace." Ruehli said she and an actress were the only attendees at the party. She said she became unconscious after consuming drinks and later woke up to find Cosby attempting to force her mouth onto his pubic area. She said she pulled away to vomit and drove herself home. It was the last time she would see Cosby, she told CNN. Florida nurse Therese Serignese, 57, told ABC's "20/20" that she was a 19-year-old model visiting Las Vegas when Cosby handed her pills in a private dressing room after a performance. "Take these," Cosby told her, according to Serignese. After consuming the pills, she remembered "feeling drugged, and I was kind of leaning forward, and he was behind me having sex with me. And I -- I remember it because it was not good." Joan Tarshis was a 19-year-old actress in 1969 when, she said, she met Cosby in Los Angeles. The two became friendly. One night after taping his sitcom, he invited her back to his bungalow and fixed her a "redeye" (a Bloody Mary topped with beer), she alleged. "The next thing I remember was coming to on his couch while being undressed," she told Hollywood Elsewhere. "I was sickened by what was happening to me and shocked that this man I had idolized was now raping me. Of course I told no one." It was the first of two similar incidents, said Tarshis, who is now a journalist and publicist. Linda Joy Traitz said Cosby offered her a ride home while she was working as a waitress at a restaurant in Los Angeles that he co-owned in 1969. On the way, they detoured to the beach. They parked and he offered her drugs "to relax," she alleged. After refusing "he kept offering me the pills," she alleged, and it made her feel uncomfortable. She claimed he then groped her chest, pushing her down in the seat and toward the door, and tried to lie on top of her. She got out of the car and ran, she said. She added that she was "absolutely not" raped. He tried to calm her, she said, then drove her home in silence. Traitz has a criminal record in Florida and spent time in prison on a conviction for drug trafficking, according to state records. Cosby's lawyer passed on her lengthy rap sheet. Traitz spoke openly about her record to CNN. Playboy bunny Victoria Valentino said her friend Francesca Emerson first introduced her to Cosby hoping to help her get work on his show "I Spy" in the late '60s. Valentino said after an interview in his trailer, Cosby invited her and a different friend to dinner, where they drank red wine and Cosby offered her pills to "cheer up," she said. She said she felt "stoned," slurring her words. They then went with him to what she described as a "ballers pad," an office-like space in an apartment building, with two loveseats and no working phone. Massachusetts store's beer bong display near mall Santa Land causes controversy | Fox News

ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT I cant think of a worse place for that, Seidel told the paper the other day. It stretches the imagination to find a scenario more diametrically opposed. The innocence of youth and the magical belief in Santa Claus on the one hand and vulgar advertising the joy of alcohol abuse on the other. Seidel was just as upset with a poster in the Spencers window that shows two women in ugly sweaters that say Lets Get Holly, Jolly Hammered and Tis the Season to Get Wasted. Seidel told the paper he is the father of a 12-year-old girl and shouldnt have to explain to her whats inappropriate about the Spencers window display. The Patriot Ledger spoke to Spencers general counsel, Kevin Mahoney, who said Seidels complaint is the first the company has gotten about the display. There are 600 Spencers Gifts stores around the country. I think most people understand the irreverent nature of our humor and that were not promoting any anti-social behavior, Mahoney said.

Co-founder Mike Nadeau said his business partner and brewmaster, Gabe Rogers, asked him jokingly if he wanted to be the doorman for the day due to the number of people who showed up. Dozens continued to pack the small brewery, located at 455 Central Ave. around the corner from the Franklin Plaza. Were excited, Nadeau said. Were just real excited. Nadeau is a graduate of the Whittemore School of Business at the University of New Hampshire, and has over 17 years of financial operations experience. Over the past 10 years, he was responsible for the business operations of two New Hampshire-based technology companies. Rogers brings eight years of becoming a homebrewer, opening a business and becoming a certified beer judge through the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) to the operation. Rogers also has a culinary background, which helped expose him to craft beer, and has over 15 years of experience in the food and beverage world. The two met when Nadeau entered Rogers store, Yeastern Homebrew Supply, which is adjacent to the brewery, when he went looking for homebrew supplies to make his own beer. With similar interests, the two hit it off and soon learned their individual skills could together to make the dream of a brewery come true. We got to know each other well, and hes a good family guy, Nadeau said Saturday while taking a short break from serving the eager crowd. We just clicked really well. Rogers mother owned the business which was previously housed in the same space as Garrison City Beerwork a shop called De Ja Vu. The response has been really good, Nadeau said. Rogers remained behind the bar Saturday, serving 4-ounce samplers of their craft beer varieties. Four beer varieties were on tap for $1, and a 32-ounce brew cost $9. Rogers focuses solely on brewing while Nadeua handles the business and organizational side of things. Nadeau said that while opening a brewery is exciting, if the beer isnt where it needs to be in terms of taste and quality, then things wont work. With the two men focused on their complimentary strengths to make the brewery a reality, Nadeau believes they have a recipe for success. I think youre going to see that in the quality of the beer, he said. The cozy space features a tasting room that seats 37 patrons and large windows showcasing the brewing equipment itself. With other craft beer breweries having moved into town in recent years, Nadeau said its clear that Dover is getting into the craft beer scene. One thing he hopes will set them apart from other offerings in town is the Crowler, a 32-ounce can that is filled and seamed in front of customers in the tasting room. The Crowler seal blocks light and keeps beer fresher longer, according to Garrison City Beerworks. The can is made from aluminum that has 68 percent recycled content. Garrison City Beerworks is the first brewery in the state to use the Crowler, according to the owners. Currently, there is no food menu at the brewery, but that may change down the road. Nadeau said the important thing, right now, is to focus on the beer and to get that right. We dont want to become distracted with another element, Nadeau said. But that doesnt mean food is out of the question for the future. So far, the menu consists of pale ales, porters, Belgian ales, wild ales and Brettanomyces fermented beers. Called Brett beers, Brettanomyces fermented beers features a non-spore forming type of yeast that makes flavorful beer and is a technique Rogers became interested in early in his brewing career. Were hoping to say, yeah, heres an IPA, but holy cow heres an IPA, Nadeau said. Hours have not yet been set for the brewery, but Nadeau said theyll be announced online within the next few days, either through the companys website at http://garrisoncitybeerworks.com/our-beer/ or on their Facebook page. Mostly NFL Notes: Talking Dez Bryant and a look around the league in Week 15 | Roto Arcade - Yahoo Sports

The Zymatic produces 2.5 gallons per batch and is aimed at brewing enthusiasts and pros looking for a machine to experiment with test runs. I could see restaurants using one to brew beers designed around seasonal meals. One early user is J Wynia, a Minneapolis software developer and avid brewer. He bought a Zymatic partly because he could tap into its Web interface and use the system to demonstrate how his companys workflow and work automation software can be used in factories. Wynia said the price is reasonable compared with automated brewing systems that have been around for a while and range from $2,500 to $6,000. For me, its a machine that adds to my existing setup rather than replacing it, he said via email. Im using it to rapidly experiment with recipes and produce small batches to see if I like what Ive come up with. For recipes that Ive perfected to be exactly what I want, Ill brew them on the bigger rig. After brewing several batches at home, I found that it does indeed remove monotony and uncertainty from the brewing process. Mostly it frees you from the stove. The Zymatic connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, and recipes are managed through a website where owners can download and share recipes and see whats brewing in Zymatics around the world. Last week, I moved the system to a new location in my house, wired it up and loaded it with ingredients for a batch of ale in about a half an hour, while simultaneously making breakfast and packing my daughter up for school. At work I monitored the brewing activity on my PC and phone. At lunch I returned to a fragrant home and finished the brewing process in about an hour. The ale should be ready to drink in a week or so. For someone who has used kits to brew basically boiling up cans and bags of prepared ingredients its an easy way to step up to brewing with raw grains. But its not quite a Keurig for brewing and is probably best for people with some brewing experience and equipment on hand. Its more like a professional machine than a kitchen appliance, though if youre handy enough to change the oil in a car or use a manual espresso machine, youll probably have no trouble with a Zymatic. My second-grader loaded the ingredients. To brew, you select or enter a recipe on the Web console. Then you fill the machine with grains, hops and any extra flavoring additions. A keg is filled with about three gallons of water then connected with included hoses. Over about four hours it cycles the water through the machine, brings it to boil, soaks and swishes it through the ingredients. Youre left with a keg of wort. Then it gets a little trickier. You have to cool the keg as quickly as possible, which I did by putting it into a bucket filled with ice and water. The Zymatic helps by circulating the wort until the temperature is just right. Then you add yeast, put on the special lid and let it ferment. The first batch I brewed spewed foam all over the kitchen during the cooling process but I think it was user error. I may not have tightened the keg hoses enough during the setup. The batch turned out well enough that I may be forgiven for the mess.

Dover brewery draws a thirsty crowd on its opening day | New Hampshire Dining & Food

He was tough at the goal line and a little deeper as well ... Tony Romo became the first player in NFL history to throw three touchdowns with no interceptions in four straight road games. In fact, he has a 15:0 TD:INT ratio over his previous five road games, as the Cowboys remain undefeated away from home (7-0) on the year...The Eagles punted down 11 points with 3:15 left in the fourth quarter...Those who banked on Philadelphia players during the critical Week 15 of the fantasy playoffs watched a team score 27 points with Mark Sanchez , LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin and Jordan Matthews account for zero touchdowns. Not sure what to make of the Colts being life-and-death at home with a Texans team that was forced to start their No. 3 QB ( Tom Savage ) for most of Sundays game, although Indy officially became the first team to secure a playoff spot...All things considered, 77 yards on 13 targets (with no Andre Johnson ) was a disappointing game from DeAndre Hopkins...Over the last four games, Reggie Wayne has totaled 70 yards on 27 targets (he also lost a fumble Sunday)...J.J. Watt had two sacks and drew a holding penalty on a play that negated a long Donte Moncrief TD all in the first half (he also swatted down a pass in yet another dominant performance). Jamaal Charles entered having scored in eight straight games (totaling 11 over that span). He failed to hit pay dirt during the crucial Week 15, watching Knile Davis do so twice while getting just 53 yards from scrimmage during a terrific matchup at home against the Raiders. Its clear Charles entered far from 100 percent, and he also took a big shot Sunday (which led to a goal-line score from Davis on the very next play)...Derek Carr has a 4:0 TD:INT ratio over the past two weeks, but he completed just 48.2 percent of his passes Sunday while getting 4.0 YPA and taking four sacks (while losing a fumble). The 14-point favorite Ravens somehow entered halftime down against the Jaguars despite having a punt block returned for a touchdown within the first four minutes of Sundays game...Justin Forsett was a huge disappointment, as was the seemingly healthy Torrey Smith , who turned three targets into 16 yards...Baltimore has gone 24 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher. Im beginning to think Bill Belichick is unreliable when to comes to who you can predict will get touches... This Mike Wallace touchdown catch was legit ...Pretty crazy this was a one-point game at halftime...Over seven games at home this season, Tom Brady has averaged 301.4 passing yards with a 19:3 TD:INT ratio while taking just five sacks. LeVeon Bell entered with five rushing touchdowns on 1,231 rushing yards. So naturally, when Im facing him in Week 15 while starting Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown , Bell scores twice on the ground while rushing for 47 yards...Harry Douglas proved to be a fine replacement for Julio Jones owners, as he secured 10-of-14 targets for a game-high 131 yards...Roethlisberger completed 77.1 percent of his passes for 360 yards (while getting 10.3 YPA and taking just one sack) yet didnt throw a TD. Big Ben has played four of his last five games on the road, but those considering him during the fantasy championship in Week 16, realize hes gotten 8.9 YPA with a 20:3 TD:INT ratio while averaging a whopping 373.5 yards over six games at home this season. I hate to be judgmental but yes, I do find this weird. The Washington secondary isnt any good, but Odell Beckham Jr. hauled in 12-of-15 targets for 143 yards and three touchdowns. He also pulled down another nice TD catch that was negated by a questionable holding call .The rookie can already run the total route tree, as hes a threat deep and also at the goal line. ODB is the real deal .Hes going to be worth a top-25 pick in drafts next year...There was one other contribution by Beckham, as he helped keep the Giants NFL-high 30th straight game with a turnover in tact when he muffed a punt with fewer than 15 seconds left on a meaningless play...DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Jordan Reed combined for 64 yards on 19 targets, which isnt very good. Over the last two games, the Bills defense has held Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers to a 0:4 TD:INT ratio, including holding Rodgers to the lowest QB Rating (34.3) of his career Sunday. To be fair, it didnt help when Jordy Nelson dropped a wide open would-be 94-yard touchdown...Sammy Watkins hasnt scored since October, when hes totaled just 260 yards on 49 targets over six games. Headlines of the Week: Harvard Business School Professor Goes To Battle Over $4 Worth Of Chinese Food ... Customers Denied Diced Onions, Throw Snake At Tim Hortons Employee ... Korean Air Vice President Forces Plane Back To Gate Over Nuts ... Creed Singer Scott Stapp Threatened To Kill President Obama, Believes He Is CIA Agent, Family Says In Panicked 911 Call ... TV Viewers Angry That Man Didnt Get Eaten Alive By Giant Snake . When it comes to Jeremy Hill , I faced him, faced a team that benched him and benched him myself during the all-important Week 15, so it was a pretty emotional viewing experience. Its quite clear hes going to be ranked well ahead of Giovani Bernard in 2015 drafts...Over two games versus the Browns this season, Andy Dalton has gone 24-of-57 for 203 yards (3.6 YPA) with a 0:4 TD:INT ratio, although Cincy won 30-0 on Sunday...At their own 20 with a minute left in the first half, Marvin Lewis decided the best strategy to win was to run Hill twice up the middle. It didnt result in a crushing fumble lost, but this was still extremely dumb...The last four Bengals shutouts have all occurred in Cleveland...Johnny Manziel had 22 passing yards and two picks at halftime. His 1.0 QBR tied for the lowest (with Brandon Weeden) among all QBs making their first start over the last five seasons. To put it mildly, Johnny Football was absolutely terrible (he was 0-of-4 with two interceptions on passes 15 yards or more downfield). Here are some of his highlights. Greg Olsen has just one touchdown over the past eight games. He also has 20 catches over the past two weeks and has the second-most fantasy points among tight ends this season...Mike Evans has secured just six of his past 19 targets over the last two contests, although three of them have resulted in scores. Im beginning to think Jake Locker might be injury prone...Eric Decker had an 81-yard touchdown cut short to 48 yards when he just barely stepped out of bounds (overturned on a review)...Decker led the Jets with 11 targets, and the next highest was Percy Harvin with three (and he had zero catches). Police Blotter: DUI Suspect Blames Eating Beer-Battered Fish ... Sons Of Anarchy Actor Skins, Cooks, Eats Ex-Girlfriends Pet Rabbit. .. Kids Try To Rob Bank With Toy Rifles ... Teen Killed Father With Crossbow After Skipping School . Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate somehow managed just 91 yards on 13 targets at home against a Minnesota team thats allowed a 91.5 QB Rating to opposing passers this season...Five of Teddy Bridgewaters 10 interceptions this year have come against the Lions. Songs of the Week: TV On The Radio: Trouble and Winter. Fullback Bruce Miller got more targets than Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis combined (and nearly three times as many yards), which kind of says it all...The personal foul penalty on the hit on Russell Wilson on third down that led to Seattles second touchdown was one of the worst calls Ive ever seen in my life...Seattles defense is absolutely dominant. The Seahawks have allowed an average of 6.8 points and 188 yards over the past four games...Wilson has a 6:5 TD:INT ratio at home and a 12:1 ratio on the road this season (hes also ran for three of his five scores on the road). Wilson has lost zero of his nine fumbles this year...It would be surprising if the NFC Championship Game isnt the Seahawks vs. Packers. Longreads of the Week: 2014 Sportsman Of The Year: Madison Bumgarner. (he once dated someone named Madison Bumgarner!) and Livin Thing: An Oral History Of Boogie Nights. Julius Thomas hasnt scored since Nov. 9 yet he still entered the week leading the NFL in TD receptions. That didnt help his owners Sunday, as the hobbled tight end managed just 30 yards on two targets...After totaling 225 yards and three TDs over Weeks 12 and 13, Keenan Allen has totaled 21 yards and zero scores over Weeks 14 and 15...Peyton Manning averaged 41.2 pass attempts last year. Hes averaged 24.7 over the past three games, posting a 3:3 TD:TO ratio over that span. Its unclear how badly hes playing hurt, but thanks to a strong Broncos defense, the team has won all of those games by an average of 10.7 points.

Bill Cosby breaks his silence - CNN.com

Donna Motsinger, 73, one of the Jane Does in the civil suit with Constand, said she met Cosby while working in a restaurant in Sausalito, California. According to Motsinger, Cosby invited her to join him for his show and she accepted. On the way, they stopped for gas and had a drink. After becoming ill, Motsinger said Cosby gave her what she thought was an aspirin. "After that there was some conversation and laughing and stuff, but then the next thing I remember ... he Paul adds beer and sake cocktails, hires new chef Posted: 12/14/2014 12:01:00 AM CST Updated: 12/14/2014 08:58:36 PM CST Trista Matascastillo, center, chats with co-owner Eddie Wu, right, at the new Cook St. Paul restaurant on the East Side on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. (Pioneer Press: Ben Garvin) Breakfast and lunch will be served starting April 17. The pair will add dinner service after their beer and wine license is approved, possibly as early as this summer. (Pioneer Press: Jess Fleming) Cook St. Paul, the little East Side diner that used to be Serlin's, now has a beer and wine license. Owner Eddie Wu, who many patrons probably don't know is a pretty good bartender -- he won some bartending awards while working in Denver -- is working on a cocktail menu using sake (technically wine). There's a Korean-influenced bloody Mary, called the Bloody Sange He, that uses a Korean bloody mix and is garnished with kimchi and cucumbers, and a drink called the "Springtime Bandini," which is made with house lemonade, apple juice and a raspberry compote. In addition, they are carrying a small selection of local beers. Wu, who had been holding down the fort alone since partner Charles Cook took another job this summer, has also hired an exciting new chef. Taelyn Lang, who most recently worked at the Modern Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis, has taken over the kitchen. He'll be using local Peterson's Limousin Beef and will make even more of the diner's menu from scratch. Wu said the menu eventually will reflect Lang's influence, and about 50 percent of the current menu items will be scrapped in favor of new dishes that Lang will create.
