'Beer Here' Now Open in New Hartford - Time Warner Cable News
These meals of beef and booze were served during elaborate feasts that were likely held as a strategy to gain some political footing in their new home, research suggests. The Icelandic Vikings probably wanted the same "tough guy" status they had in their homeland of Scandinavia, where tribe leaders often held elaborate feasts in huge halls, according to Davide Zori, the archaeological field director for the Mosfell Archaeological Project, in Iceland. The showy feasts of beef and beer were likely held to demonstrate power and political status , and helped the Vikings lock in good relationships with their neighbors. Zori and his team are excavating a farmstead called Hrisbruin Mosfell Valley, in southwestern Iceland. The site includes a Viking chief's 100-foot-long (30 meters) house that also features a great hall that probably hosted some of these extravagant Viking feasts. [ Fierce Fighters: 7 Secrets of Viking Seamen ] Carbon dating showed the house was built between the late 9th century and early 10th century, and was abandoned by the 11th century. The researchers are combining archaeological evidence from the dig site with ancient Viking historical texts to study the group's culture. "These texts read almost like novels," Zori said in a statement . "They talk about daily life. Yes, the Vikings may have put axes to one another's heads, but these accounts also describe milking cows." Not long after the Viking group settled in Iceland, temperatures dropped, and the North Atlantic experienced a small ice age . This cold snap meant nine months of winter and only three months that were only a little warmer than winter, according to Zori. Cattle, the source of the Vikings' elaborate feasts, had to be kept indoors to protect them from the frigid temperatures. Since the cattle were housed inside, they couldn't graze and feed themselves. The Vikings had to ensure food for both the cattle and people would last through the intense winters, and eventually keeping enough cows for elaborate feasts became impractical. Beer also suffered from the cold climate, as Vikings could no longer produce enough grain to support brewing during the shortened growing season. After beer production dropped off in Viking households, chieftains vanished from the Viking sagas that Zori has been studying. "You wonder what came first for the chieftains at Hrisbru," Zori said. "Were they no longer powerful and didnt need barley and beef? Or could they just not keep it up and so they lost power? I favor the second explanation." Archaeological records tell only part of the story, Zori said. The Viking texts provide more context and seem to support the idea that the Vikings did not voluntarily give up their beef and booze, and the political clout that the products brought, until the weather forced them to. "Maybe we don't need the Vikings to prove this, but it shows you that politics can become more important than creating a productive society," Zori said. Eventually, the Vikings had to give up raising cattle and growing grains in favor of sheep herding. Zori and the team hope the dig will yield more insights into the politics and everyday life of the Icelandic Vikings.

Green further detailed her allegations in a defamation lawsuit against Cosby filed in December. Helen Gumpel, a model and actress known as Helen Selby professionally, appeared in a bit part in a late-1980s "Cosby Show" episode. A short time later, her agent got a call that Cosby wanted to meet with her. In a statement, Gumpel said that, after Cosby hugged and kissed her in front of onlookers at a New York studio, she was asked back to his dressing room. There, she found Cosby "wearing a loosely tied robe" and then -- with the robe still on -- he put "his crotch area in my face," Gumpel alleged. The comedian touched her shoulders then tried repeatedly to get Gumpel to have a drink he'd made, she said. After her refusals, Gumpel said, "Cosby turned his back to me and walked to the door. Cosby looked at me and his face clouded up, as if he was frustrated and angry, and he told me to leave." In a statement released through lawyer Gloria Allred's office, Helen Hayes alleged that Cosby followed her and two friends "around all day" at a summer 1973 celebrity tennis tournament in Pebble Beach, California, hosted by actor Clint Eastwood. Hayes claimed she and her friends tried to avoid Cosby, but he caught up with them in a restaurant, "approached me from behind and reached over my shoulder and grabbed my right breast." "I was stunned and angry, because he had no right to do that and I did not know why he would behave that way," Hayes said. "His behavior was like that of a predator." Famed model Beverly Johnson alleged that Bill Cosby drugged her in the 1980s at his Manhattan brownstone, where she'd gone to rehearse lines. During the meeting, Johnson said, Cosby was "very insistent" she drink a cup of cappuccino he had made for her. "After that second sip, I knew I had been drugged," she alleged. "It was very powerful, it came on very quickly." Johnson said she then confronted and cursed at the comedian, claiming, "I wanted him to know he had drugged me." She alleged that Cosby got angry, grabbed her, took her outside and flagged down a taxi for her. Cosby's attorney didn't immediately return a CNN call for comment on Johnson's allegation, which she first made in a Vanity Fair article. Judy Huth has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming sexual battery and infliction of emotional distress during an incident at the Playboy Mansion, according to court documents. The alleged sexual assault took place in 1974 when Huth was 15 years old. According to court documents, Huth and a 16-year-old friend met with Cosby and eventually went to the Playboy Mansion with him. "He then proceeded to sexually molest her by attempting to put his hand down her pants and then taking her hand in his hand and performing a sex act on himself without her consent," according to the documents. Cosby's lawyer said Huth's claims are "absolutely false" and he accused her of engaging in extortion after Cosby rejected her "outrageous demand for money in order not to make her allegations public." P.J. Masten was a Playboy bunny in her 20s and met Cosby while working as a server at one of Playboy's establishments. He asked her to lunch one afternoon in Chicago, then later called to invite her to dinner, she told CNN. Before the dinner, attended by four other men at the Whitehall Hotel, Masten said, Cosby poured her a drink. "And the next thing I know, it was 4 o'clock in the morning," Masten said. "I woke up in a bed naked, bruised. He was lying next to me, and I slithered out of the bed, my clothes all over the floor. ... I got myself together, I went downstairs, I got in a cab and I went home." Masten recalled "hurting really bad." As to why, she alleged: "There were bruise marks all over me. I knew I was raped by him." Louisa Moritz, seen here in a 1971 episode of "Love, American Style," told TMZ she was in the green room of the "The Tonight Show" at NBC in New York when Cosby paid her a visit. He offered to turn her into a "major star through his direction." Then he forced himself on her, she alleged. Donna Motsinger, 73, one of the Jane Does in the civil suit with Constand, said she met Cosby while working in a restaurant in Sausalito, California. According to Motsinger, Cosby invited her to join him for his show and she accepted. On the way, they stopped for gas and had a drink. After becoming ill, Motsinger said Cosby gave her what she thought was an aspirin. "After that there was some conversation and laughing and stuff, but then the next thing I remember ... he's next to me, he's got his hands on me and I look up I see the lights of the city. I could see it clear as a bell in my mind right now, the lights of the city coming back and it was all blurry, kind of the lights, and I passed out again," she said. Kristina Ruehli was a secretary for a talent agency in 1965 that had Cosby as a client. She said she was invited to a party to celebrate a taping of "Hollywood Palace." Ruehli said she and an actress were the only attendees at the party. She said she became unconscious after consuming drinks and later woke up to find Cosby attempting to force her mouth onto his pubic area. She said she pulled away to vomit and drove herself home. It was the last time she would see Cosby, she told CNN. Florida nurse Therese Serignese, 57, told ABC's "20/20" that she was a 19-year-old model visiting Las Vegas when Cosby handed her pills in a private dressing room after a performance. "Take these," Cosby told her, according to Serignese. After consuming the pills, she remembered "feeling drugged, and I was kind of leaning forward, and he was behind me having sex with me. And I -- I remember it because it was not good." Joan Tarshis was a 19-year-old actress in 1969 when, she said, she met Cosby in Los Angeles. The two became friendly. One night after taping his sitcom, he invited her back to his bungalow and fixed her a "redeye" (a Bloody Mary topped with beer), she alleged. "The next thing I remember was coming to on his couch while being undressed," she told Hollywood Elsewhere. "I was sickened by what was happening to me and shocked that this man I had idolized was now raping me. Of course I told no one." It was the first of two similar incidents, said Tarshis, who is now a journalist and publicist. Linda Joy Traitz said Cosby offered her a ride home while she was working as a waitress at a restaurant in Los Angeles that he co-owned in 1969. On the way, they detoured to the beach. They parked and he offered her drugs "to relax," she alleged. After refusing "he kept offering me the pills," she alleged, and it made her feel uncomfortable. She claimed he then groped her chest, pushing her down in the seat and toward the door, and tried to lie on top of her. She got out of the car and ran, she said. She added that she was "absolutely not" raped. He tried to calm her, she said, then drove her home in silence. Traitz has a criminal record in Florida and spent time in prison on a conviction for drug trafficking, according to state records. Cosby's lawyer passed on her lengthy rap sheet. Traitz spoke openly about her record to CNN. Playboy bunny Victoria Valentino said her friend Francesca Emerson first introduced her to Cosby hoping to help her get work on his show "I Spy" in the late '60s. Valentino said after an interview in his trailer, Cosby invited her and a different friend to dinner, where they drank red wine and Cosby offered her pills to "cheer up," she said. She said she felt "stoned," slurring her words. They then went with him to what she described as a "ballers pad," an office-like space in an apartment building, with two loveseats and no working phone. Valentino said she was feeling "totally out of it" when she saw Cosby attempting to advance on her passed-out friend. She said she began reaching out to Cosby to pull him off her friend when he pushed her down, first pushing himself near her mouth, before turning her around and raping her. Who are Cosby's accusers? Photos: Who are Cosby's accusers? What drugs did Cosby allegedly use? Model: Bill Cosby drugged me Cosby accusers: There are more women "Let me say this," the 77-year-old said . "I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism and when you do that, you have to go in with a neutral mind." Model Beverly Johnson says Bill Cosby drugged her Brown wrote that Cosby "sounded upbeat on the phone," especially when it came to a question about how his wife, Camille, is holding up. "Love and the strength of womanhood," Cosby said. "Let me say it again, love and the strength of womanhood. And, you could reverse it, the strength of womanhood and love." The actor then resumed his public relations posture of late and ended the conversation, saying, "They don't want me talking to the media." Brown also writes for the Washington Informer, a newspaper targeted to the African-American community, and he spoke with CNN about their conversation. Brown said he came away with the clear sense that Cosby actually doesn't want to stay silent at all but is nevertheless deferring to the guidance of his representatives for the time being.

Massachusetts store's beer bong display near mall Santa Land causes controversy | Fox News
ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT I cant think of a worse place for that, Seidel told the paper the other day. It stretches the imagination to find a scenario more diametrically opposed. The innocence of youth and the magical belief in Santa Claus on the one hand and vulgar advertising the joy of alcohol abuse on the other. Seidel was just as upset with a poster in the Spencers window that shows two women in ugly sweaters that say Lets Get Holly, Jolly Hammered and Tis the Season to Get Wasted. Seidel told the paper he is the father of a 12-year-old girl and shouldnt have to explain to her whats inappropriate about the Spencers window display. The Patriot Ledger spoke to Spencers general counsel, Kevin Mahoney, who said Seidels complaint is the first the company has gotten about the display. There are 600 Spencers Gifts stores around the country. I think most people understand the irreverent nature of our humor and that were not promoting any anti-social behavior, Mahoney said.

Co-founder Mike Nadeau said his business partner and brewmaster, Gabe Rogers, asked him jokingly if he wanted to be the doorman for the day due to the number of people who showed up. Dozens continued to pack the small brewery, located at 455 Central Ave. around the corner from the Franklin Plaza. Were excited, Nadeau said. Were just real excited. Nadeau is a graduate of the Whittemore School of Business at the University of New Hampshire, and has over 17 years of financial operations experience. Over the past 10 years, he was responsible for the business operations of two New Hampshire-based technology companies. Rogers brings eight years of becoming a homebrewer, opening a business and becoming a certified beer judge through the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) to the operation. Rogers also has a culinary background, which helped expose him to craft beer, and has over 15 years of experience in the food and beverage world. The two met when Nadeau entered Rogers store, Yeastern Homebrew Supply, which is adjacent to the brewery, when he went looking for homebrew supplies to make his own beer. With similar interests, the two hit it off and soon learned their individual skills could together to make the dream of a brewery come true. We got to know each other well, and hes a good family guy, Nadeau said Saturday while taking a short break from serving the eager crowd. We just clicked really well. Rogers mother owned the business which was previously housed in the same space as Garrison City Beerwork a shop called De Ja Vu. The response has been really good, Nadeau said. Rogers remained behind the bar Saturday, serving 4-ounce samplers of their craft beer varieties. Four beer varieties were on tap for $1, and a 32-ounce brew cost $9. Rogers focuses solely on brewing while Nadeua handles the business and organizational side of things. Nadeau said that while opening a brewery is exciting, if the beer isnt where it needs to be in terms of taste and quality, then things wont work. With the two men focused on their complimentary strengths to make the brewery a reality, Nadeau believes they have a recipe for success. I think youre going to see that in the quality of the beer, he said. The cozy space features a tasting room that seats 37 patrons and large windows showcasing the brewing equipment itself. With other craft beer breweries having moved into town in recent years, Nadeau said its clear that Dover is getting into the craft beer scene. One thing he hopes will set them apart from other offerings in town is the Crowler, a 32-ounce can that is filled and seamed in front of customers in the tasting room. The Crowler seal blocks light and keeps beer fresher longer, according to Garrison City Beerworks. The can is made from aluminum that has 68 percent recycled content. Garrison City Beerworks is the first brewery in the state to use the Crowler, according to the owners. Currently, there is no food menu at the brewery, but that may change down the road. Nadeau said the important thing, right now, is to focus on the beer and to get that right. We dont want to become distracted with another element, Nadeau said. But that doesnt mean food is out of the question for the future. So far, the menu consists of pale ales, porters, Belgian ales, wild ales and Brettanomyces fermented beers. Called Brett beers, Brettanomyces fermented beers features a non-spore forming type of yeast that makes flavorful beer and is a technique Rogers became interested in early in his brewing career. Were hoping to say, yeah, heres an IPA, but holy cow heres an IPA, Nadeau said. Hours have not yet been set for the brewery, but Nadeau said theyll be announced online within the next few days, either through the companys website at http://garrisoncitybeerworks.com/our-beer/ or on their Facebook page. Mostly NFL Notes: Talking Dez Bryant and a look around the league in Week 15 | Roto Arcade - Yahoo Sports
The Zymatic produces 2.5 gallons per batch and is aimed at brewing enthusiasts and pros looking for a machine to experiment with test runs. I could see restaurants using one to brew beers designed around seasonal meals. One early user is J Wynia, a Minneapolis software developer and avid brewer. He bought a Zymatic partly because he could tap into its Web interface and use the system to demonstrate how his companys workflow and work automation software can be used in factories. Wynia said the price is reasonable compared with automated brewing systems that have been around for a while and range from $2,500 to $6,000. For me, its a machine that adds to my existing setup rather than replacing it, he said via email. Im using it to rapidly experiment with recipes and produce small batches to see if I like what Ive come up with. For recipes that Ive perfected to be exactly what I want, Ill brew them on the bigger rig. After brewing several batches at home, I found that it does indeed remove monotony and uncertainty from the brewing process. Mostly it frees you from the stove. The Zymatic connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable, and recipes are managed through a website where owners can download and share recipes and see whats brewing in Zymatics around the world. Last week, I moved the system to a new location in my house, wired it up and loaded it with ingredients for a batch of ale in about a half an hour, while simultaneously making breakfast and packing my daughter up for school. At work I monitored the brewing activity on my PC and phone. At lunch I returned to a fragrant home and finished the brewing process in about an hour. The ale should be ready to drink in a week or so. For someone who has used kits to brew basically boiling up cans and bags of prepared ingredients its an easy way to step up to brewing with raw grains. But its not quite a Keurig for brewing and is probably best for people with some brewing experience and equipment on hand. Its more like a professional machine than a kitchen appliance, though if youre handy enough to change the oil in a car or use a manual espresso machine, youll probably have no trouble with a Zymatic. My second-grader loaded the ingredients. To brew, you select or enter a recipe on the Web console. Then you fill the machine with grains, hops and any extra flavoring additions. A keg is filled with about three gallons of water then connected with included hoses. Over about four hours it cycles the water through the machine, brings it to boil, soaks and swishes it through the ingredients. Youre left with a keg of wort. Then it gets a little trickier. You have to cool the keg as quickly as possible, which I did by putting it into a bucket filled with ice and water. The Zymatic helps by circulating the wort until the temperature is just right. Then you add yeast, put on the special lid and let it ferment. The first batch I brewed spewed foam all over the kitchen during the cooling process but I think it was user error. I may not have tightened the keg hoses enough during the setup. The batch turned out well enough that I may be forgiven for the mess.

Dover brewery draws a thirsty crowd on its opening day | New Hampshire Dining & Food
He was tough at the goal line and a little deeper as well ... Tony Romo became the first player in NFL history to throw three touchdowns with no interceptions in four straight road games. In fact, he has a 15:0 TD:INT ratio over his previous five road games, as the Cowboys remain undefeated away from home (7-0) on the year...The Eagles punted down 11 points with 3:15 left in the fourth quarter...Those who banked on Philadelphia players during the critical Week 15 of the fantasy playoffs watched a team score 27 points with Mark Sanchez , LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin and Jordan Matthews account for zero touchdowns. Not sure what to make of the Colts being life-and-death at home with a Texans team that was forced to start their No. 3 QB ( Tom Savage ) for most of Sundays game, although Indy officially became the first team to secure a playoff spot...All things considered, 77 yards on 13 targets (with no Andre Johnson ) was a disappointing game from DeAndre Hopkins...Over the last four games, Reggie Wayne has totaled 70 yards on 27 targets (he also lost a fumble Sunday)...J.J. Watt had two sacks and drew a holding penalty on a play that negated a long Donte Moncrief TD all in the first half (he also swatted down a pass in yet another dominant performance). Jamaal Charles entered having scored in eight straight games (totaling 11 over that span). He failed to hit pay dirt during the crucial Week 15, watching Knile Davis do so twice while getting just 53 yards from scrimmage during a terrific matchup at home against the Raiders. Its clear Charles entered far from 100 percent, and he also took a big shot Sunday (which led to a goal-line score from Davis on the very next play)...Derek Carr has a 4:0 TD:INT ratio over the past two weeks, but he completed just 48.2 percent of his passes Sunday while getting 4.0 YPA and taking four sacks (while losing a fumble). The 14-point favorite Ravens somehow entered halftime down against the Jaguars despite having a punt block returned for a touchdown within the first four minutes of Sundays game...Justin Forsett was a huge disappointment, as was the seemingly healthy Torrey Smith , who turned three targets into 16 yards...Baltimore has gone 24 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher. Im beginning to think Bill Belichick is unreliable when to comes to who you can predict will get touches... This Mike Wallace touchdown catch was legit ...Pretty crazy this was a one-point game at halftime...Over seven games at home this season, Tom Brady has averaged 301.4 passing yards with a 19:3 TD:INT ratio while taking just five sacks. LeVeon Bell entered with five rushing touchdowns on 1,231 rushing yards. So naturally, when Im facing him in Week 15 while starting Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown , Bell scores twice on the ground while rushing for 47 yards...Harry Douglas proved to be a fine replacement for Julio Jones owners, as he secured 10-of-14 targets for a game-high 131 yards...Roethlisberger completed 77.1 percent of his passes for 360 yards (while getting 10.3 YPA and taking just one sack) yet didnt throw a TD. Big Ben has played four of his last five games on the road, but those considering him during the fantasy championship in Week 16, realize hes gotten 8.9 YPA with a 20:3 TD:INT ratio while averaging a whopping 373.5 yards over six games at home this season. I hate to be judgmental but yes, I do find this weird. The Washington secondary isnt any good, but Odell Beckham Jr. hauled in 12-of-15 targets for 143 yards and three touchdowns. He also pulled down another nice TD catch that was negated by a questionable holding call .The rookie can already run the total route tree, as hes a threat deep and also at the goal line. ODB is the real deal .Hes going to be worth a top-25 pick in drafts next year...There was one other contribution by Beckham, as he helped keep the Giants NFL-high 30th straight game with a turnover in tact when he muffed a punt with fewer than 15 seconds left on a meaningless play...DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Jordan Reed combined for 64 yards on 19 targets, which isnt very good. Over the last two games, the Bills defense has held Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers to a 0:4 TD:INT ratio, including holding Rodgers to the lowest QB Rating (34.3) of his career Sunday. To be fair, it didnt help when Jordy Nelson dropped a wide open would-be 94-yard touchdown...Sammy Watkins hasnt scored since October, when hes totaled just 260 yards on 49 targets over six games. Headlines of the Week: Harvard Business School Professor Goes To Battle Over $4 Worth Of Chinese Food ... Customers Denied Diced Onions, Throw Snake At Tim Hortons Employee ... Korean Air Vice President Forces Plane Back To Gate Over Nuts ... Creed Singer Scott Stapp Threatened To Kill President Obama, Believes He Is CIA Agent, Family Says In Panicked 911 Call ... TV Viewers Angry That Man Didnt Get Eaten Alive By Giant Snake . When it comes to Jeremy Hill , I faced him, faced a team that benched him and benched him myself during the all-important Week 15, so it was a pretty emotional viewing experience. Its quite clear hes going to be ranked well ahead of Giovani Bernard in 2015 drafts...Over two games versus the Browns this season, Andy Dalton has gone 24-of-57 for 203 yards (3.6 YPA) with a 0:4 TD:INT ratio, although Cincy won 30-0 on Sunday...At their own 20 with a minute left in the first half, Marvin Lewis decided the best strategy to win was to run Hill twice up the middle. It didnt result in a crushing fumble lost, but this was still extremely dumb...The last four Bengals shutouts have all occurred in Cleveland...Johnny Manziel had 22 passing yards and two picks at halftime. His 1.0 QBR tied for the lowest (with Brandon Weeden) among all QBs making their first start over the last five seasons. To put it mildly, Johnny Football was absolutely terrible (he was 0-of-4 with two interceptions on passes 15 yards or more downfield). Here are some of his highlights. Greg Olsen has just one touchdown over the past eight games. He also has 20 catches over the past two weeks and has the second-most fantasy points among tight ends this season...Mike Evans has secured just six of his past 19 targets over the last two contests, although three of them have resulted in scores. Im beginning to think Jake Locker might be injury prone...Eric Decker had an 81-yard touchdown cut short to 48 yards when he just barely stepped out of bounds (overturned on a review)...Decker led the Jets with 11 targets, and the next highest was Percy Harvin with three (and he had zero catches). Police Blotter: DUI Suspect Blames Eating Beer-Battered Fish ... Sons Of Anarchy Actor Skins, Cooks, Eats Ex-Girlfriends Pet Rabbit. .. Kids Try To Rob Bank With Toy Rifles ... Teen Killed Father With Crossbow After Skipping School . Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate somehow managed just 91 yards on 13 targets at home against a Minnesota team thats allowed a 91.5 QB Rating to opposing passers this season...Five of Teddy Bridgewaters 10 interceptions this year have come against the Lions. Songs of the Week: TV On The Radio: Trouble and Winter. Fullback Bruce Miller got more targets than Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis combined (and nearly three times as many yards), which kind of says it all...The personal foul penalty on the hit on Russell Wilson on third down that led to Seattles second touchdown was one of the worst calls Ive ever seen in my life...Seattles defense is absolutely dominant. The Seahawks have allowed an average of 6.8 points and 188 yards over the past four games...Wilson has a 6:5 TD:INT ratio at home and a 12:1 ratio on the road this season (hes also ran for three of his five scores on the road). Wilson has lost zero of his nine fumbles this year...It would be surprising if the NFC Championship Game isnt the Seahawks vs. Packers. Longreads of the Week: 2014 Sportsman Of The Year: Madison Bumgarner. (he once dated someone named Madison Bumgarner!) and Livin Thing: An Oral History Of Boogie Nights. Julius Thomas hasnt scored since Nov. 9 yet he still entered the week leading the NFL in TD receptions. That didnt help his owners Sunday, as the hobbled tight end managed just 30 yards on two targets...After totaling 225 yards and three TDs over Weeks 12 and 13, Keenan Allen has totaled 21 yards and zero scores over Weeks 14 and 15...Peyton Manning averaged 41.2 pass attempts last year. Hes averaged 24.7 over the past three games, posting a 3:3 TD:TO ratio over that span. Its unclear how badly hes playing hurt, but thanks to a strong Broncos defense, the team has won all of those games by an average of 10.7 points.

Bill Cosby breaks his silence - CNN.com
Paul adds beer and sake cocktails, hires new chef Posted: 12/14/2014 12:01:00 AM CST Updated: 12/14/2014 08:58:36 PM CST Trista Matascastillo, center, chats with co-owner Eddie Wu, right, at the new Cook St. Paul restaurant on the East Side on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. "To have great places to eat in our own neighborhood, it's awesome," said Matascastillo, who lives nearby. "It brings up the reputation of the entire East Side." (Pioneer Press: Ben Garvin) Breakfast and lunch will be served starting April 17. The pair will add dinner service after their beer and wine license is approved, possibly as early as this summer. (Pioneer Press: Jess Fleming) Cook St. Paul, the little East Side diner that used to be Serlin's, now has a beer and wine license. Owner Eddie Wu, who many patrons probably don't know is a pretty good bartender -- he won some bartending awards while working in Denver -- is working on a cocktail menu using sake (technically wine). There's a Korean-influenced bloody Mary, called the Bloody Sange He, that uses a Korean bloody mix and is garnished with kimchi and cucumbers, and a drink called the "Springtime Bandini," which is made with house lemonade, apple juice and a raspberry compote. In addition, they are carrying a small selection of local beers. Wu, who had been holding down the fort alone since partner Charles Cook took another job this summer, has also hired an exciting new chef. Taelyn Lang, who most recently worked at the Modern Cafe in Northeast Minneapolis, has taken over the kitchen. He'll be using local Peterson's Limousin Beef and will make even more of the diner's menu from scratch. Wu said the menu eventually will reflect Lang's influence, and about 50 percent of the current menu items will be scrapped in favor of new dishes that Lang will create.

-- Beer Here Beverage Center is now open in the Crossroads Plaza on Seneca Turnpike in New Hartford. It opened last week and offers more than 400 varieties of beer. Each weekend, breweries will come in and offer samples in the tasting room, and customers can choose from 16 beers on tap and fill their growlers. The store carries many national and international beers - but focuses on supporting craft breweries springing up all over New York. "They're using a lot of different ingredients that maybe aren't used in the other products and they're making smaller batches, so they can focus on something new, something different," said Brett Levitt, Beer Here president.
