200 years ago today, the London Beer Flood killed eight people

The 15-foot tall tidal wave of booze crashed into buildings and flooded cellars, even killing eight especially unfortunate souls. The culprit? A busting vat. The epicenter of the London Beer Flood was Horse Shoe Brewery on Tottenham Court Road, which was brewing porter in huge vats. A metal hoop on one of these vats snapped. The force unleashed by one bursting vat broke a several others, and pretty soon there was a flood of porter pouring through the streets. George Crick, the clerk on duty, gave this account to the newspaper, which was recently reprinted in the Independent : I was on a platform about 30 feet from the vat when it burst. I heard the crash as it went off, and ran immediately to the storehouse, where the vat was situated. It caused dreadful devastation on the premises - it knocked four butts over, and staved several, as the pressure was so excessive. Between 8 and 9,000 barrels of porter [were] lost. Unfortunately, the brewery also happened to be right next to the poorly built slums of St. Giles. The beer flooded into the houses, sweeping away and killing several people in them. All told, the London Beer Flood claimed eight victims and demolished two buildings. You can read more about the London Beer Flood in the Independent , just in time for happy hour. Research and Markets: Beer: 2014 Global Industry Almanac for the $500+ Billion Market - Yahoo Finance

The only other options are to downsize the amount you drink (not likely) or fully commit to your craft beer addictionand buy yourself a kegerator. Neither option is particularly enticing, but thankfully somebody has cooked up an alternative solution. Freshly launched on Kickstarter just last week, uKeg is a pressurized stainless steel growler that can hold either 64 or 128 ounces of beer (comes in two sizes), and keep it fresh for considerably longer than its average glass counterpart. How, you ask? The secret lies in the uKegs unique pressurization cap. Hidden inside the cap theres a little slot designed to hold a CO2 cartridge, as well as a selectordial on the cap that allows you to regulate the amount of gas it releases. To help you get a sense of how pressurized the growlers interior chamber is, the tap is outfittedwith a brass pressure gauge. Related: The ultimate beer chiller spins your suds down to 40 degrees in 40 seconds Truth be told, this isnt the first contraption in the world that helps you keep your beer from going flat. There are cheaper options available out there, but uKeg seems to have two things going for it that other products do not: durability and plain old aesthetic appeal. The double-wall stainless steel enclosure is far more durable than glass, and all the accompanying brass fittings give it a sort of steampunkish look thats sure to turn a few heads at your local brewpub. Unsurprisingly, the project has already blasted past its initial $75K funding goal, and is currently sitting on more than double that amount with more than 50 days left in the campaign.

ukeg infographic Beer Trail An official beer trail showing where Louisville breweries are located and what sets them apart. There will be three versions: an online map, a map in the Louisville Metro brewery brochure, and one in each of our nine breweries as well as the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau. Additionally, brochures can be handed out at breweries, the Louisville Information booth, and the Louisville Visitors Center. Another goal for the brewery map is is to include a bike trail, which will in turn create bike racks in front of each brewery designed by local artists. Beer-friendly Alcohol Beverage Control Laws Opening a brewery in Louisville is exciting and profitable, however getting to that point can be difficult due to the states alcohol beverage control laws. The goal is to adjust the laws in order to make it more smooth and organized when opening a brewery as well as easier to obtain a special temporary license when hosting special events, tastings, and other activities related to alcohol. Incorporate breweries and their products in Louisville venues and events Louisville breweries have made great strides in the fight against large beer corporations and this plan will further enable them to do so. Louisville venues and events like Slugger Field, Iroquois Park, and Waterfront Wednesday, to name a few, will begin to move towards the sales of local beers hopefully by Spring/Summer of 2015. This will not only profit local breweries and the citys economy, but also allow Louisvillians to enjoy handcrafted locally brewed beers at their local venues and events. Barrel-Aged Beer Festival This has to be the best plan yet for Louisvilles expansion of their craft beer industry- a Barrel-Aged Beer Festival set for Winter/Spring of 2015. Initially, this festival promoting the home of bourbon and barrel-aged beer will focus on local and regional breweries and then move to a nationwide focus by 2016.
