Stock Market Has Best Day Of 2014 - Oct. 8, 2014

Beer Census 2014 truck rolls into Mentor - newsnet5.com Cleveland

In fact, it looked downright dreamy in the stock market Wednesday. The Dow surged 275 points -- its best performance of the entire year -- after a new report suggested the Fed isn't ready to lift interest rates off the floor just yet. That comes as a big relief to the stock market, which has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Fed's easy-money policies. Minutes from the Fed's mid-September meeting came out Wednesday afternoon and show that some officials are worried about slowing global growth , especially in China and the euro zone. Central bankers are also concerned the rapidly-rising U.S. dollar could hurt U.S. exports and prevent inflation from reaching the Fed's 2% target. Both of those trends -- weaker overseas growth and a rallying greenback -- have only become more pronounced since that last Fed meeting. Plan to attend the 'Best Beer Fest on the Emerald Coast - News - Walton Sun

Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014 Beer Town: Hotoberfest is gone but three other beer festivals live on By Bob Townsend For the AJC While beer lovers are celebrating the explosion of new craft breweries in Georgia, there are still some nagging questions about quantity versus quality. The same goes for beer festivals, which seem to peak this time of year. After six years, the founders of the beer geek favorite, Hotoberfest, decided to take a break after the October 2013 edition of the festival in Historic Old Fourth Ward Park. Alan Raines and co-founder Tryon Rosser helped start the East Atlanta Beer Festival in 2003, and launched Hotoberfest in 2008, with the big idea of creating an event that would appeal to serious beer drinkers. But last year, Raines expressed serious misgivings about the number of beer festivals popping up around metro Atlanta, and explained the need to be different. When we started East Atlanta Beer Festival, there were only two others, Decatur and the one up around Perimeter Mall, Raines said. Since then, with the addition of all the festivals, primarily as money-generating events, weve really tried to add something new every year, and dial up our event to be something that stands apart from the rest. Raines and Rosser are planning a new, much smaller festival, which they hope to debut in June 2015. It will be based on the VIP portion of Hotoberfest, and feature rare and wood-aged beers. The VIP experience ticket at Hotoberfest was limited to 500 people, Raines said, recently. Having it smaller will eliminate a lot of the logistics and allow us to concentrate on getting great beers tapped directly from wooden barrels. And we may even incorporate some spirits tied to the barrels. The bottom line, I guess, is that we will leave the big festivals to the people who are doing them now. We want to attract enthusiasts interested in barrel-aged beers and a premium event. And we want to have a focus on Georgia craft beer and tie it to fundraising for the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild. More October Beer Festivals If youre missing Hotoberfest this year, here are three other October beer festivals to check out. Hop Harvest Festival Saturday Hosted by Terrapin Beer Co. at its Athens brewery, the Hop Harvest Festival always features the limited release of the fresh wet hop beer, So Fresh & So Green, Green. Pre-sale glass vouchers $20, with $5 of each sale donated to the Dogwood Alliance. 4:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday. 265 Newton Bridge Road, Athens, 706-549-3377. terrapinbeer.com . Decatur Craft Beer Festival Oct. 18 One of the original community beer tasting events, the Decatur Craft Beer Festival takes place on Decatur Square, offers a limited number tickets sold online, and always sells out early. But look for over 100 curated American craft beers, showcased along with live music and food for sale from local vendors. Later, you can enjoy Decaturs bar and restaurant scene. $40 general/$100 VIP. Noon-5 p.m. Oct. 18. Decatur Square, Decatur. decaturbeerfestival.org/index.php . WEWS Previous Next MENTOR, Ohio - When people think of a census crew rolling into a neighborhood, it's something that brings visions of government-anointed personnel asking lots of personal questions every decade in the name of gathering information for future distribution of taxpayer's money. The Beer Census 2014 is something quite different. A company based in Wilmington, N.C. said it will launch a cell phone application, Next Glass sometime in November to scientifically predict what beer and wine drinkers might enjoy without ever tasting it. The new app will use its Wilmington, North Carolina lab's results from bottled or canned products brought in in the next few months. Eventually 45 states will be searched by Next Glass' crews to send samples back to their labs. Visiting the Save-On Beverage & Tobacco Store advertising over 3,000 beers in stock, Next Glass' Beer Census 2014 workers, George Taylor and Stephen Pond, gathered as many local brews as they could find, checking each in their data base so as not to duplicate samples. Boxes of Ohio brewed beers and wine were piling up quickly at Save-On's counter way before noon on Tuesday. "Next Glass is an idea of a group of guys in Wilmington, N.C. that just got tired of buying bad beer and wine. There's just so many selections out there you never really know what to choose and nowadays everyone's got a different opinion on what taste is good to them, and it could possibly taste bad to you. Or what's sweet to you may be bitter to me," explained George Taylor. "They kind of got tired of it and decided there's got to be a better way to do it. Since then they've created Next Glass which is a mobile application for your phone. What they do is go around the country buying all the beer and wine that they can and they bring it back to the lab. From there they test it and break it down to the molecular level and give each wine or beer a DNA," said Taylor. "With that DNA, it will go through software that will allow you to bring up any beverage store, grocery store, or restaurant's wine list and compare it to something you've tried. Based on the DNA of the wine or beer it's going to suggest something almost identical to your taste preferences. What's nice is if you're out of town and you want something like one of your favorite beers like something from Great Lakes and you're out in California I can give you an almost 100 percent DNA match so you can have that same beer out there from a different brewer," added Taylor. Burnette Ave, later this Fall. With its home base in Danville, KY, owner Brian Holton and his partners, Ian Lujik, and Dr. James Turpin, have had their mind set on expanding to Louisville since they purchased the old Germantown space back in 2012. The Schnitzelburg neighborhood, just three miles southeast of downtown Louisville, is the perfect location for the upcoming brewery as it will be the only brewery among the many brew-pups within the Germantown area. And, if Beer Engine hasnt already proved their success since opening their doors in February 2011, with awards like Danvilles Oldest Brewery and Most Craft Taps in a (Danville) Bar, then we know they will be just as successful here in Louisville. Beer Engine owners are excited to be a part of the growing Louisville appreciation for good food and good beer, while quenching those thirsty taste buds with new concoctions such as Melkweg, Najaar, and Zomer. Along with their own craft beers, Beer Engine is also planning a menu that will not only complement their craft beers, but will also include sustainable, locally grown and raised food that is easy on the wallet. Beer Engine has yet to set an official opening date, as they have a had a few setbacks with building issues, however they are expected to open later this Fall. Stay tuned.
