James Runs The Show For Phl Champ Miller Career : Stlhss

Hatch man charged with selling beer to teens before fatal crash, students grieve at school where victim went | KOB.com

2 in the STLhighschoolsports.com small-schools rankings and No. 5 in the Missouri Class 4 poll. And this is only his second season at the position. He began his career as a running back. About the third or fourth game into (last) season I decided to make the change to Jaylan, Harvey said. We've been rolling ever since. A Class 4 quarterfinal team a season ago, the Phoenix have crushed everyone on their schedule save a tough 28-14 battle with PHL rival Roosevelt. Otherwise it's been blowout city. That will change when Miller Career gets on a bus and rolls to play at Jackson at 7 p.m. Friday. The Indians are 7-1, ranked No. 7 in Class 5 and call their home field "The Pit." Which is exactly the type of challenge James and his teammates are looking for. This is a pretty big game for us, James said. We know the crowd will be for the home team and we know everybody will come out to the game. We have to cancel the crowd out and play to the best of our abilities. James' abilities have sharpened with every passing day. Last season he threw for 1,332 yards, 21 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed for 780 yards and 12 touchdowns. Harvey knew James would be an asset, but even he was left in awe of the things the Phoenix did while James was under center. I thought, for his first year playing quarterback, (the 1,332 passing yards) was off the chain, Harvey said. I moved him from running back to quarterback because I thought he was the kid to run my offense. Harvey said James carries a 3.8 grade-point-average and quickly grasped the intricacies of his new position. Harvey also said James' leadership skills pay dividends for the Phoenix. James is well aware the Phoenix are seen through a different prism than other programs in the area. They're from the city and proud of it.

What's Cooking on 1060: Halloween Beer, Pizza and Beer, and Craft Beer « CBS Philly

(Renee Gilinger of the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District, shows off her witch -- Dona Ana County deputies have arrested a man suspected of selling beer to three teenagers before they got into a crash in Hatch Tuesday , killing one of them and a 32-year-old woman. Court documents show 65-year-old Alfredo Alaniz of Hatch is charged with unlawful sale of alcoholic beverages, selling or giving alcohol to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A 13-year-old boy who was a passenger inside the pickup truck with his cousin and the 16-year-old driver reportedly bought eight cans of Budweiser from Alaniz at the man's home, according to the criminal complaint. The driver, Vanessa Rodriguez, told deputies she and her friend, 16-year-old Sonia Rodriguez, were fighting over the steering wheel before colliding head on with a vehicle near the intersection of Canal Road and Castaneda Road. Sonia Rodriguez and the driver of the other vehicle, Elida Garcia, died at the scene. A passenger in Garcia's vehicle, 50-year-old Maria Granados, was transported to an El Paso-area hospital for injuries she sustained in the crash. "It was a very horrific accident, probably one of the worst I've ever seen in my entire tenure as a police officer," said Hatch Police Chief Lee Alirez. "It hits home very deeply." Vanessa Rodriguez has been charged with vehicular homicide and negligent child abuse resulting in death. A DWI charge is pending the results of a blood sample taken at the crash scene. Both Sonia and Vanessa Rodriguez were juniors at Hatch Valley High School, where Sonia was remembered Thursday as grief counselors and teachers help students work through losing one friend, and another facing a long list of felony charges. "It's going to be tough," said Hatch Valley Public Schools Superintendent Linda Hale. "She's got a close group of friends that are really traumatized right now." "You're always concerned about the kids that don't seek counseling, so we have teachers on the lookout for kids that are extra quiet," Hale said. "The kids that are crying like crazy...they'll get that out. We're worried abou tthe quiet kids who are taking this internally." Counselors are also dealing with two grieving children who lost their mother, Elida Garcia. "She has children in two of the elementary schools," Hale said. A preliminary review of the case with the Third Judicial District Attorney's Office determined Rodriguez will be charged as an adult. Almost as good were the crisp potato pancakes served with spicy mustard alongside. The Beer Braised Brisket Sandwich ($8.99), a mountain of slow-roasted shaved beef topped with Guinness steak sauce was a also a savory fall treat. For a Cleveland twist, the Lizard is also offering Loaded Pierogies in honor of Beer Week, housemade cheddar-potato pierogies topped with beer cheese sauce, chunks of applewood bacon and sliced green onions ($8.49). Jason Shaw, founder and president of the Kirksville Guild of Brewers, said he decided to start the club early last October to motivate himself to brew his own beer more often. He said he was already part of a Facebook group for homebrewers in the city, but it had not been active for several years. I knew there were a lot of people interested in the community, Shaw said. I just got the ball rolling. Shaw invited local homebrewers for unofficial brewing days in October and November last year to see if there was enough interest in forming a new club. The group officially came into being in late November and held its public launch party on May 3. He said the group has given him new drive to create his beer. I brewed probably the same amount of beer in 2014 as I have in the past few years, Shaw said. Shaw is currently brewing an Oktoberfest, Porter and Indian Pale Ale for the upcoming event in his home, but enjoys making hoppy beers the most. He said the brewing process begins with sanitizing every piece of equipment he plans to use for a certain batch. On his brewing day, Shaw said he gets several gallons of water to a strike temperature so it stays between 150 to 155 degrees when he adds grain, creating wort. He says the mixture is boiled for an hour to an hour and a half, with other ingredients such as hops or spices added in during that time. He then stirs a small amount of boiling water into the mixture and stirs it vigorously, which kills the enzymes brewing the beer. The beer is then transferred to a container, has yeast added and is air-locked for one to two weeks. At that point, the beer can go through more fermentation or can be bottled and carbonated on the spot. Shaw said the fastest brews can take two to four weeks to prepare, but some can take up to 18 months to finish. While the club is actively trying to recruit new brewers, Shaw said many of the clubs 40 members arent homebrewers. Those members joined to increase their appreciation for craft beers and to support the local brewing community. The KGB originally planned to hold their Beer Appreciation Day earlier this month to coincide with the traditional time of year Oktoberfests are held, but scheduling issues pushed the date later to Oct. 25. Shaw also said Oktoberfest tends to only allow certain styles of beer, so the group changed the date and name to make the event welcoming to all styles of homebrew beer. Page 2 of 2 - Shaw said he hopes people who come to the event will learn to appreciate beer for its nuances. You wouldnt believe how many people would say, Ill pick out a Bud Light and thats all I drink, Shaw said. But if you set down a group of beers down in front of them without that bottle, its going to be the first time theyre going to be looking at their beer, the first time theyll be smelling their beer. Jonathan Vieker, KGB Chief Directorate of Finance, said the group is currently working towards incorporating as a tax-exempt non-profit organization that is funded primarily by the groups annual dues of $25. He said the group aims to raise $3,000 from Beer Appreciation Day and hopefully donate $2,000 of that to United Way of Adair County. NEMO Beer Appreciation Day events begin Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. at the Farmers Market near the square, where KGB members will demonstrate how to prepare a homebrew for fermentation.

Deputies arrest Hatch man for selling beer to teen before fatal crash - Silver City Sun-News

Alfredo Alaniz, 65, allegedly sold eight Budweiser beers to a 13-year-old boy who came to his front door in the 600 block of Hayes Street in Hatch, according to a criminal complaint filed in Magistrate Court. The boy told Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office investigators that Alaniz is known for selling beer, food and snacks, the complaint states. Alfredo Alaniz Arrested on Wednesday night, Alaniz is accused of giving alcohol to a minor, unlawful sale of alcoholic beverages and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, all fourth-degree felonies. He is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash-only bond, according to a news release. The boy, a student at Hatch Valley Middle School, told authorities he was drinking beer and watching a soccer game after school with Vanessa Rodriguez and his cousin, Sonia Rodriguez the girls, both 16, are not related. When they finished the four beers the girls brought, the boy told authorities, they went to Alaniz's to buy more. The boy knocked on Alaniz's door and asked for $10 worth of Budweiser, the complaint states. "It's for my uncle," the boy said. "Are you sure?" Alaniz reportedly responded. "Yes," said the boy, according to the complaint, and with that Alaniz allegedly retrieved the eight beers. After the illicit transaction, the boy told sheriff's investigators the three teens drove around Hatch, drinking the beers. Eventually, Vanessa Rodriguez, who was driving her parents' 2003 GMC pickup without their permission, turned onto Canal Road, heading toward Salem. She and the boy told investigators that Sonia Rodriguez grabbed the steering wheel. Vanessa Rodriguez said she tried to adjust the wheel, but the truck slammed head-on into a 2002 Hyundai Sonata, killing its 32-year-old driver, Elida Garcia. Another passenger in Garcia's vehicle, 50-year-old Maria Granados, was transported to an El Paso-area hospital with injuries she sustained in the crash. The truck rolled, investigators said, partially ejecting and crushing Sonia Rodriguez. She died at the scene. Alaniz pled guilty to driving under the influence of liquor or drugs in 1999, his fourth such charge, according to court records. Vanessa Rodriguez is charged with negligent child abuse resulting in death, vehicular homicide, great bodily harm by vehicle, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, driving without a license and being a minor in possession of alcohol. Additional charges of DWI are pending because deputies smelled alcohol on her, and conducted a blood test.
